For example, a 54 fabric with an 8 vertical repeat and a 12 horizontal repeat = a 20 total repeat. Therefore, if a chair takes 8 yards of 54 wide plain fabric, then a fabric with an 8 vertical repeat and a 12 horizontal repeat will require 25% more fabric, or approximately 10 yards. Railroaded fabric/pattern Railroading refers to the way a fabric, usually a pattern, is milled. Normally a bolt of fabric features the top of a pattern going up the roll. However, a railroaded fabric will have the top of the pattern going across the roll. This provides a continuous roll of the pattern, making it possible to upholster a large sofa, cushion or draperies without creating seams or a break in the pattern.
