While teaching in public schools, she was constantly amazing her fellow teachers and friends with her sewing skills. As mother of five children, Donna provided steady flow of quality clothes, suits, dresses, window dressings, and more. Donna has original designs that have appeared across the country in Revolutionary War reenactments, wrestling rings, and formal events. Over the past fifteen years, Donna has managed an alterations shop, a drapery and window covering workroom, custom sewing center, and opened her own sewing and quilting stores. Today, Donna is responsible for the sewing education of three sewing centers in central Texas. Donna and her husband of 39 years, David, have five grown children, four sons and a daughter. They have seven grandchildren. They have a very active church life with David preaching and teaching every Sunday. David Trumble is a minister, author, sewing machine technician, business manager, and educator. David earned his doctor s degree in 1985, and has worked as a Minister Of The Gospel for over thirty years. He has vast experience with sewing including work with Donna in several sewing businesses (alterations shop, a drapery and window covering workroom, and custom sewing center). David has completed advanced technical training and work as a sewing machine technician. He also has numerous articles and books published in multiple areas of interest.

CHAPTER THREE HOW DOES THE SEWING MACHINE WORK? To begin, we will look at an antique model that will help us understand the basics. The Jones sewing machine was like many others of its time.

Another lever drives the feed dogs to move the fabric. At the right of the upper shaft machine a lever drives a vertical shaft, which in turn causes the shuttle to move back and forth.

11 CHAPTER THREE HOW DOES THE SEWING MACHINE WORK? To begin, we will look at an antique model that will help us understand the basics. The Jones sewing machine was like many others of its time. The Jones uses a hand crank mechanism to turn the upper shaft which connects by lever to the needle bar at the far left of the machine causing it to move up and down. Another lever drives the feed dogs to move the fabric. At the right of the upper shaft machine a lever drives a vertical shaft, which in turn causes the shuttle to move back and forth. With all of these parts working in proper balance and time the needle comes down and just as it begins moving back up, the shuttle slides behind the needle through the scarf picking up the thread. The needle continues up and the shuttle pulls to one side as the threads loop and tighten into a stitch.

Below you see a picture of a bobbin and the shuttle. The bobbin is placed between the bobbin winding tier on the right and the pincher on the left. As the hand wheel turns, it turns the bobbin and thread from the spool pin fills the bobbin. After the bobbin is full, it slides into the shuttle and is place on its holder which you can see below. On the far left of the machine you can see the upper tension spring, needle take up lever, presser bar, and needle bar. If you look closely, just above the bobbin winder is a black lever. Lift lever and the stitches will be longer. Pull it down and the stitches become shorter. On Left you can see the bottom view of the pivot arm with the shuttle on the far left.

From the drawing below taken from the original owners manual you can easily see how the inner workings enable the machine to function.

From the drawing below taken from the original owners manual you can easily see how the inner workings enable the machine to function. In figure 2 above, notice the upper bar which drives the feed dog shaft and moves the feed dogs to move the fabric. The lever in the middle carries the shuttle on the far left. More modern machines operate much the same way. Three distinctively different types of sewing machines (mechanical, electronic, and computerized) have developed. Mechanical machines form stitches in the same mechanical fashion as their predecessors except that today s mechanical machines use round bobbins and usually offer multiple stitches. Electronic sewing machines use electronics to control the stitch formation, machine speed, and operation.

14 And computerized machines use pulse motors to form stitches and achieve greatly improved precision and ease.
