3 Monday 9th April 2018 Balancing Act Like to have the balance of a tightrope walker? Find your centre of gravity and explore the physics of balance at the same time. No net required for this balancing act! Centre of gravity activities Can you overcome the forces of gravity and keep your balance? Ruler balance - Where on the ruler will it balance? What happens if you add a weight to the end? Make - a balancing clown Da Vinci s Vitruvian Man complete body measurements and see if you have symmetry for balance. Why is it easier to balance a moving bicycle? Explore gyroscopes and spinning tops to find out more Make - a balancing spinning top Baby steps - Investigate how the ratio of a baby's head to body size influences its centre of gravity and ability to walk. Tight-rope walkers - learn a few trade secrets of the high wire experts with balance boards.

4 Tuesday 3rd & 10th April 2018 Wonky Vision Seeing is not always believing! Let's open our eyes to the wonderful world of optics and the workings of the brain to look at the world around us, discovering tricks of the eye and creating illusions that can fool us. A summary of sight - Explore our eye model and find identify the lens, iris, pupil, cornea, optic nerve, retina. The world upside down - use hand lenses to find out how our eyes see images upside down. Optical Illusion pictures Trick your eyes with clever optical illusions. Do you see a cat or mouse, frog or horse? Light sensitivity can we see in the dark? Study the pupils to see how they react to light and dark. Why do we need two eyes? - Take a look at depth perception and how 3D images work. Make - a 3D or moving picture Make - a thaumatrope Moving Illusions See how spinning pictures can trick our eyes into thinking they're moving with strobotops and zoetrope

5 Wednesday 4th & 11th April 2018 Taste Buddies Do your taste buds tingle? Can your tongue savour the flavours? Let's tantalise your taste buds and excite your nostrils as we explore why we like some food and drinks, but not others. Spit science On average we produce a litre of saliva per day. This helps our taste buds help us detect flavours, but how? Sweet bread explore how enzymes in your saliva can break down the carbohydrates into sugar. Are you a super taster? Supertasters have many more taste buds than usual and are much more sensitive to certain tastes and flavours. Taste testing can your tongue work out which liquid is sweet, sour, bitter or salty? Smell test - Can you match the smells to the cards? Odour Discrimination Memory Test - smells are often associated with memories, so let's test your olfactory shortterm memory. Make - Sherbet and see how each ingredient changes the flavour. Burp-able bubbles water doesn t really have a flavour, but if you carbonate it will its flavour change?

6 Thursday 5th & 12th April 2018 Sounds Like Music Uncover the magic of music, turn up the volume and lend me your ear! Discover how sounds are made and why symphonies are simply superb. Find out how sound travels and how we can change it to make music by making your own instrument. Sound waves see how sound waves travel and listen to secret whispers with talking tubes and old fashioned cups and string. Speed of sound game discover how sound travels differently through gases, liquids and solids. Vibrations feel the vibrations coming from sound and see how it can make liquids dance. Make - straw Oboe and lolly stick kazoos. Is the ocean in a seashell? what is it you can hear? Sound effects listen closely and guess how these sound effects were made. Craft - your own instrument from scrap Musical Instruments see how to change pitch and frequency with twirling pipes, boom whackers, music boxes.

7 Weekday Friday 6th & 13th April 2018 Under your skin Discover how refined your nervous system is and see if you can feel your way through, as we explore our sense of touch. Touchable Textures There are two patches of each material. Can you find a matching pair with touch alone? Toothpick poke gently touch another person on the back of their hand (without them watching) with one or two toothpicks. As they get closer together can you still feel two pokes or one? Temperature sensing using hot and cold water to see how sensitive your hands are to temperature changes. Impression Pin art What pattern can you make? Make Orbeez stress ball Make squishy, sensory toy Proprioception test your sense of where your body is. Try to complete the maze in the mirror s reflection. Baffling body illusions - which sense do you think is being fooled? How confusing do you think they are?
