COLLECTIF PROTOCOLE PRESENT MONUMENT Project Creation 2017
MONUMENT Created for 5 jugglers, a musician and a dozen local participants. Monument will have the perfume of a poetic foray onto a stage occupied by a city and its inhabitants. Show in two chapters Chapter 1 : 3 days of performances in situ on the scale of the city for an univited public. Chapter 2 : an hourlong performance for an invited public in a precise place in the city
Note of intent on chapter 1 The intention of this chapter is to bring the inhabitants of a precise neighborhood into a universe where day-to-day life is slightly modified. Length Three days. This length is necessary so we can melt into the daytoday life of the chosen area. Each day, several performances will take place in specific areas chosen carefully with our local partners. The spot The stage of chapter 1 spreads out over a few square kilometers. The places are chosen jointly with those who invite us. Our performances can take place in a specific neighborhood or a small town. Relations with the public In this first part, the public is not invited. The jugglers will go to any animated part of the city, near schools, busy streets or on sides of roads. The intention here is to intrigue : incite questions and pique curiosity. We will not give out keys to help spectators to understand. This first chapter will concentrate on the plot and character presentation. habitants-jongleurs de la ville. Activities with local participants During these three days we will build the project with a group of participants. We will meet with them for two hours during the first day, explain the process and the rules and lend them costumes. The costume is a black detective s jacket with a horse mask made of latex. During the week they will have to meet in precise areas to create structured images. These structured images will be the starting blocks for the juggler s improvisations. On the last day of chapter one, we will meet again with the participants for another workshop during which we will share our feelings o the experiences of the week and will present their roles in chapter 2.
Note of intent on chapter 2 This part will be the conclusion to the show. The intention here is to invite the public to discover a play taking place in a monumental setting, at night, and for specially invited spectators. Length The second chapter will last one hour. The spot We want to work in a place that s not meant to house performing artists. It can be an empty field, a dock, a parking lot, a warehouse, a park, an airfield, woods or even a street. Whatever the choice, it has to be over and beyond the size of an ordinary stage setting and its natural function will be altered. We will also try to find the place s loophole, a small place not necessarely visible at first glance, a spot usually hidden that no one really cares about. Our inspiration does not only come from the place in a geographical sense but also from its history and from the encounters and experiences our group will have during the shows1q1q. We also like to work with the seasons and the uncertainties of the weather. They become our partners during these performances. Each area has unique values that we will try to reveal one by one. For this purpose, we choose to work with white, naked lights, be they theatrical, cinematic or industrial in scale. It will stay white so it can t be misinterpreted with a filter. And the public? The stage for the performance will be made up of three different areas : The first will be set so that the public is facing the stage, and an immense depth of field. The public is seated. The second place is composed of five small entities where the public is invited to discover short solos in a more intimate setting. The last one is a circular stage, with the artists in the middle and the spectators surrounding them. The spectactor s movements will be precise and monitored by the artists themselves.
The staging We have chosen to work with light in a unique way : low power lighting, mainly batterypowered so we can easily occupy any space. Every element of our stage will be used for lighting. That is why we use a pickup truck mounted with a led projector handled by an artist. The truck s headlights will also be modified for the stage s purpose, lighting the area in a natural way. To do this, we use improvised urban and domestic projectors that can easily be handled by performers : neons, flashlights and LED projectors. Thibault Condy will participate in our performances. He has already worked with certain members of our group for many years ( Ceci n est pas un Urinoir, and with the collective Martine à la plage). He will be the stage manager for this show. Thibault will be assisted by a second technician. Drone We want the technology to be able to follow and react rapidly. We will therefore attach a very light projector to a drone to be able to follow and light up the jugglers wherever they go. Pick up truck A car equiped with a LED projector and an independent system. The performers can drive the truck and manipulate the projector. The truck s radio can be used as a sound system. The truck can also be used as a stage for concerts and management space for technicians. The music For this second chapter, we invite musicians to play as we perform. The choice of music will be made along with our local partners. Wel will brief the musician with all the requirements needed to participate. This briefing will present our intentions and the vision of MONUMENT. The musicians can then fully participate in the show and the creative process of the performance. Local participants The local participants will interact at very precise moments during the performance. They will initiate group effects and general surprise.
Example from La Courneuve Maison des jonglages Chapter 1 : The plot Red lines : perimeter of the stage Purple square : meeting point open two hours a day for the public to meet the artists and organizers. A map tracing the progress of the investigations will be displayed and updated in real time. Blue lines : route by car for improvisations lit up for one or two minutes in different areas of the neighborhood. Green lines : high speed chase between jugglers. Yellow circles : processions of jugglers in areas inaccessible by car. Chapter 2 : The ending / 400 spectators Blue color : The spectators area Area 1 (25 min) : considerable depth of field. Spectators facing performers. Dreamlike atmosphere. Area 2 (10 min) : minimalistic places. Spectators divided in five groups for solo performances. Unique moment to delve into the intimacy of all five characters. Area 3 (15 min) : Circular. All the characters gather up for a last show to celebrate the ending.
