What is Google Earth? Google Earth is a 3D virtual globe and map. It used to be called Earth Viewer 3D. It was created by a Central Intelligence Agency called Keyhole Inc. and acquired by Google in It maps the earth using satellite imagery and aerial photography. Google Earth includes views of the Earth, sky, Mars, and the Moon. Famous landmarks and historical buildings can be found on Google Earth in 3D. You also have access to vivid pictures and articles, and places of interest all throughout the world. Google Earth will give you a great platform with which to explore the Earth.. Google Earth start up screen Have fun exloring in Google Earth! 1 Introduction

Chapter 1: Finding/searching places Google Earth allows you to explore any area of the world with a 3D map. There is no limit to the number of destinations you can explore, nor is there any limit to the distance you can travel. 1.1 : Flying to and from different places You can use Fly To if you are curious about a particular area of the world. Fly to will zoom into an area of your choice. The first step in using Fly To, is to think about an area of the world that you would like to explore in 3D form. Once you have decided, find the Search tab, which will be located under file, edit, and view, in the top left-hand corner. Fly To should show up under the search bar. If Fly To doesn t show up under the search bar, then click the Search tab. (See Figure 1.1.1) After clicking the search tab, 3 tabs will be present: Fly To, Find Businesses, and Directions. Click on the Fly To tab. (See Figure 1.1.2) Figure Type your destination into the search bar. If you can t think of a place to explore, click on the down arrow, to the right of the search bar, and a list of destinations will come up. You can click on a destination to add it to the search bar. Once a destination is entered, click the picture of the magnifying glass, to the right of the down arrow. (See figure 1.1.3) Figure Figure After you click the magnifying glass, Fly To will zoom into your destination. Chapter 1: Finding/Searching Places 2

The button looks like two rectangles, one over-top the other, with a + to the right of the rectangles. Click on the image overlay button.(see Figure 3.1.1) Image Overlay Button Figure A box will come up. The top left-hand corner of the box will say Google Earth-New Image Overlay. (See Figure on next page) Once this box comes up, there will be a place for you to type in the name of the image overlay, and the link. Click in the blank area to the right of where it says name, and you can type in whatever name you like. If you want to be descriptive, name the overlay whatever the image is of.(for example, a Google Earth user added an image overlay of the Thunder Mountain ride in Disney World. He/she named the image overlay Thunder Mountain, and they placed it over Disney World in Orlando Florida on Google Earth. He/she created a virtual tour for a friend who was about to go to Disney World, but hadn t ever been there.) Chapter 3: Changing imagery settings 10

Figure Once you name the image overlay, you will need to browse your computer for a picture to add. Click the browse button, to the right of the link box. Search through your files, and when you find the right picture to overlay, click on it and it will be automatically added. You can change the transparency by moving the transparency slider from either clear, which would be very see through and transparent, to opaque, which would be solid and non-transparent. You will see the changes in your photograph as you slide the bar from left to right, and when the photograph is at the level of transparency that you like you can click the OK button on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen to the left of cancel. Your image will then be overlayed over the area that you were looking at on the map.(for an example of an image overlay, See figure on next page) 11 Chapter 3: Changing imagery settings

Figure You can click cancel if you realize that you no longer want the photograph overlayed. If you picked the wrong photograph erase the text in the link box and start over again by clicking browse 3.2: Changing views/seeing the universe You can view a whole lot more in Google Earth, than just the Earth. You can view a few other places in the universe as well. You have the option of viewing the Earth, sky, Mars, or the Moon. 24 Chapter 4: Documenting places In Google Earth, you can save places to look at whenever you want, share them or even print them out. 4.1: Using placemarks In Google Earth, you can put a pin in the map for future reference. The pin is called a placemark. It s the same idea as book marking a website. You do it so that you can come back to it again in the future. In order to mark a place on the map, you must click the place-mark button.(see figure 4.1.1) The place mark button is in the top left of the Google Earth screen in an icon tool bar. The place-mark icon looks like a yellow thumb tack. Add placemark button Figure When you click on the place-mark button, a box will come up that says Google Earth-New Placemark. (See figure on next page) In this box you can name your placemark by entering text into the name box, or leave it untitled. You can also change the latitude or longitude, the altitude, style, color, description and view of your placemark. Chapter 4: Documenting places 22

Figure You can change the latitude and longitude by entering a new latitude and longitude in the latitude and longitude boxes. You can change everything else by clicking on the tabs below the latitude and longitude boxes. Once all of your placemark settings are adjusted the way you want them, click OK in the bottom right hand corner of the box. If you don t change the latitude or longitude, your placemark will end up directly in the middle of the sections of the map that you were viewing when you clicked add placemark. The more you zoom in before clicking add placemark, the more precise your placemark location will be. If you want to be really precise, you can fly to a specific city or address.(see Chapter 1.1: Flying to and from different places, pg. 2, for flying directions) Once you fly to the address it will show up in the map and under the fly to box that you typed the address into. You will see the address in blue, underlined font. (See figure on next page) 23 Chapter 4: Documenting places

Figure Right click the blue underlined font with your address in it and you will get a drop-down list of options. Click on Add. You will get another drop-down list of options, and then click on Placemark. 4.2: Adding locations to My Places Another way to save a location to look at again in the future, is to add the location to My Places. To add a location to My Places, you must first figure out the location that you want to save into My places. Once you know, you must fly there.(see Chapter 1.1, pg. 2, for flying directions) Once you are done flying to the address that you have selected, the address will appear underneath the box that you typed it into. The address will be in blue font, and underlined.(see figure 4.1.3, above) You must then click on this blue, underlined address, and drag it into the places tab, under My Places. (See figure 4.2.1) Once you let go, this location will be saved into My Places. As soon as you let go you will see it in my places. In the picture below, you will see that Venice, Italy has just been added. Figure Chapter 4: Documenting places 24

4.3: ing, printing, and viewing in Google maps This section will tell you how to or print a specific view of a location on Google Earth. It will also tell you how to view your selected location in Google Maps. If you want to your current view of Google Earth, first make sure you are in the place you want to be, and as zoomed in as you want to be. Exactly what you see on your screen is what will be ed. Once you have the view that you want, you must find the button.(see figure 4.3.1) The button is in the top left-hand corner of the map, with all of the other icons. The button looks like an envelope. button Figure Once you have clicked the button, a box will come up giving you three options.(see figure 4.3.2) You will then select one of the options and click . Figure Chaper 4: Documenting places

Once you have clicked , a box will come up asking you if you want to use Gmail to it, or if you want to use your current default program.(see figure 4.3.3) You must select one of the two, or hit cancel if you have decided that you don t want to send the . Figure If you want to print your current view of Google Earth, first make sure you are in the place you want to be, and as zoomed in as you want to be. Exactly what you see on your screen is what will be printed. Once you have the view that you want, find the print button.(see figure 4.3.4) The print button is in the top left-hand corner of the map, directly to the right of the button. The print button looks like a piece of paper coming out of a printer. Print button Figure Chapter 4:Documenting places 26

Once you have clicked print a box will come up with the option Screenshot of current 3D view. (See figure 4.3.5) You will then click print, or cancel of you no longer wish you print. Figure If you want to look at your current view in Google Maps, you should first make sure that you are in the place you want to be in Google Earth. Your current Google Earth view is what will be shown in Google Maps. Once you are in the right place, find the view in Google Maps button.(see figure 4.3.6) This button is in the top left-hand corner with all of the other icons. It is directly to the right of the print buton. It may be hard to tell, because the icon is so small, but it looks like a map. You can not view an area in Google Maps if you don t have internet access. View in Google Maps Figure Once you click on the View in Google Maps button, you will be brought to the Google Maps website and shown the area that you were viewing in Google Earth.(See figure on next page) The advantage of Google Maps is the detail. If you zoom into the street far enough, you will get a very detailed Street view. It is much more detailed. This is why you may want to view some things in Google Maps, and this button gives you that option. 27 Chapter 4: Documenting places

Figure Street view in Venice, Italy Figure is a Street View in Venice, Italy in Google Maps. Figure 4.3.8, below, is the same Street View, just in Google Earth. As you can see the Google Maps view is much more detailed. So, although there are so many more things to do in Google Earth than in Google Maps, you may want to use Google Maps for a far more detailed Street View. Figure Chapter 4: Documenting places 28
