1 Soft Surface Displays Exploiting Reflection and Dispersion of Liquids Workshop on Pervasive Display Infrastructures, Interfaces and Applications PERVASIVE 2006 The 4th International Conference on Pervasive Computing May 7, 2006 Dublin, Ireland A. Ferscha and H. Schmitzberger Universität Linz, Institut für Pervasive Computing Altenberger Straße 69, A-4040 Linz
2 Our Work: Display Landscapes Observation: emerging / growing display landscapes plethora of surfaces potentially serving as displays heterogeneous technologies / size/ purpose fragmented, physically dispersed Challenges: semantically connected contextually aware unified displaying unified interacting personalized Example Display Landscapes: Smart Office Smart Home Smart Public Spaces Smart Cars and Traffic Soft Surface Displays // PERVASIVE 2006 // 7. May 2006 < 2 >
3 Display Landscape Software Framework: Service-Classes Classification of Interaction regarding the flow-control one-way interaction capabilities, e.g. posts which are presented on the wall These applications could be able to receive content from users (e.g. via SMS) two-way interaction capabilities, e.g. an auction system This category requires that data can be sent to the display landscape from users and vice versa (but a user is not required to permanently interact with the system) applications with a high degree of interaction requirements, e.g. (multi-user) games presenting their content to display landscapes. Such applications requires a permanent interaction between dsiplay landscape and users in both directions. Introduced service-classes for applications with different interaction capabilities // modalities (one-way) Service-classes Note, Auction, etc. (two-way) Service-classes Gallery, Video, Poll, Map, Web, Banner, etc. (multi-modal) Service-classes Game, etc. Soft Surface Displays // PERVASIVE 2006 // 7. 5 See Through Displays See the Invisible" interfaces that better support attention and maintain the fluency of work eliminate the gaps between the physical world and the real world objects provide users with flexible access to information in new environments a new exploration experience of the physical world seamlessly merged with its digital annotations via a non-obtrusive MR interface an integration of ubiquitous context-awareness and physical hyperlinking DigiScope [Ferscha Keller 03] Current Work (SPECTACLES) Video Input: Standard VGA, female DB-15 connector. Video Input Fits most adult frames and safety glasses. Eyeglass Frame Size Focus Range from 2 to 15 feet Field of View 16 degrees horizontal See-around display optics. 640 x 480, 24-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate 40 grams (excluding eyeglasses) SPECTACLES [Ferscha Vogl 05] Soft Surface Displays // PERVASIVE 2006 // 7.
