2 Maintenance and Safety While the instrument is operating, be careful not to expose your eyes to the laser beam. Direct exposure to a laser beam for a long time may be hazardous to your eyes. The laser beam is equivalent to a class 3R. Operate this laser so that the laser beam plane avoids impact on the eyes of vehicle drivers or pedestrians. Do not try to dismantle the instrument. Have it repaired by your dealer or supplier. Dismantling yourself may worsen the problem or void your warranty. Attach the MRL-101 securely to a tripod or laser trailer, or mount on a stable level surface. Always check the tripod or trailer before beginning work. Make sure all screws, bolts, and nuts are tight. If your tripod has chains, they should be slightly loose to allow for thermal expansion during the day. On extremely windy days, secure the tripod. Placing a sandbag on each leg can do this. The laser should not be stored or used in extreme temperature or during rapid temperature change. The laser may not function properly if used out of the ambient temperature range. Store inside the carry case and place in a dry area not subject to vibration, dust or high moisture. If the storage temperature and ambient temperature for usage vary significantly, leave the laser in its case until it can adjust to the ambient temperature. The laser should be transported or carried carefully to avoid impact or vibration. The laser should be stored in the carry case and packed with cushioning material. Always handle the laser with care. 1

3 1. Principles of Operation This laser uses a semiconductor diode, which provides excellent beam visibility. The laser beam will rotate freely to form a plane-scanning surface. The rotary beam is emitted as illustrated here: In upright-setting for horizontal applications 2

6 2.3 Panel Functionality 1. Switch on/off Manual mode: Switch on/off the laser. When press this button for three seconds, the laser will enter into manual mode. The pendulum will be locked then, the manual slope adjustment function will be started. Press X/Y button, the slope will be switched in between X and Y axis, by pressing + or you can set the slope of two axis manually. 2. Rotational speed: The speed of rotate head of 600,900,1200R.P.M can be obtained. 3. Switch between X&Y axis: This button is available for manual slope adjustment. Also available for calibrating accuracy of laser. 4. Calibration: Press this button for 3 seconds the laser will enter into calibration mode, the accuracy of two axis can be adjusted and the accuracy of laser is able to be recovered. 5. H.I Alert: Warns the user for a misaligned device. When the instrument is in this mode, there will be a signal on the LCD display to alert user that the position of the instrument has changed. 6. Beam masking: Electronic Beam Masking allows the operator to turn off the laser beam in specific quadrants to prevent interference with other operations on the job. 7. Using the setup menu, the beam can be turned off in up to three selected quadrants. 8. Minus: Right spin. In calibration mode, the function of this button is to change the position of laser beam. 9. Plus: Left spin. In calibration mode, the function of this button is to change the position of laser beam. 5

7 3. Using the MRL Battery Installation NI-Mh rechargeable battery packs are suitable for use to power this laser. To install: 1. Un-screw the battery cover at the bottom of the instrument. 2. Put the batteries into the case according to the right electrode. 3. Re-screw the battery cover at the bottom of the instrument. 3.2 Instrument Placement Horizontal Rotation Lay the instrument on a tripod or stable flat surface, or hang it on a wall. Set the unit upright, and keep the slope of the instrument within the range of -5 to +5 self-levelling range. 3.3 Operations Power Press the ON/OFF key to switch the laser on. If the battery indicator on LCD shows empty meanwhile is flashing, the voltage of the batteries is low and batteries need to be recharged. 6

8 3.3.2 Leveling When you turn the laser on, it will automatically level. During leveling process the laser beam is off. After the laser has automatically leveled, the laser rotating head will rotate at the speed of 600 RPM with the laser emits. If the instrument is placed improperly, or the slope of instrument exceeds the range of -5 to +5, the mode indicator and the laser beam will blink at the same time. Note: The instrument will shut down automatically if the unit exceeds the self-leveling system range for more then 5 minutes. 7

9 3.3.3 Spinning a. Continuous spinning Press the rotating head speed button to control the spinning speed of the laser rotating head. If the key is pressed repeatedly, the spinning speed of the laser module will correspondingly change to the following speeds: 0, 600,900,1200 RPM b. Step spinning Continue to press the rotating head speed button and set the speed to 0 RPM. The laser beam will stop spinning. To step/move the laser rotating head clockwise, press the right-spin button. To step/move the laser rotating head counter-clockwise, press the left-spin button. c. Recommended Head Speeds For surveying and manual machine control applications the typical head speed is 600 rpm. For automatic machine control applications it is recommended to use the highest head speed(1200 rpm) in order to increase the frequency of updates. When working at extended distances, decreasing the head speed (increasing the pulse time on the receiver) can improve distance and performance. 8

10 3.3.4 Slope Adjustment When the instrument is set upright for horizontal rotation, the slope of the X-axis and Y-axis can be adjusted by using manual mode. To select manual mode, hold the on/off key for 5 seconds. When the Manual / Automatic icon is appear on LCD(A HAND), the laser is in manual mode. a. X-axis slope Aim the X1-beam to the direction of the slope to be adjusted, as depicted below: Press the + or - key to move the laser beam up or down. b. Y-axis slope Aim the Y1-beam to the direction of the slope to be adjusted.press X/Y key to switch the slope from X axis to Y axis. Press the + or - key to move the laser beam up or down. To return to automatic mode, press the ON/OFF key again(when in manual mode). The icon of manual mode(hand) will disappear on LCD, the laser will start self-leveling again. 9

11 4. Charging the laser Plug hole Rechargeable battery pack When the icon of battery on LCD is EMPTY & FLASHING, the laser must be recharged, The charger plugs in to the laser via the plug hole is at the fount of the housing, shown above. If the indicator light of the charger is red, the batteries are being charged. If the indicator light of the charger is flashing red, the batteries and charger have bad connection. If the indicator light of the charger is green, the charging cycle has ended and the unit is fully charged 10

12 Notes: 1. Standard rechargeable batteries will take no more than 7 hours to fully recharge. 2. The power required for the charger is: Frequency: 50-60HZ; Voltage: VAC (standard main supply). 3. The instrument can be used while charging. 4. If the laser will be kept in storage or left unused for a long time, the batteries (alkaline or rechargeable battery) should be taken out. 11

13 5. Remote To use, aim the aperture of the remote towards the laser. The remote will work at a distance of up to 30 meters indoors and 20 meters outdoors. The light indicator on the remote will blink to show the operating signal has been sent. Functions that can be controlled by the remote are as follows: 1. Spinning 2. Beam masking 3. Slope adjustment 12

14 6. Accuracy Checking Follow these instructions for checking axis accuracy. 1. Place the laser 50 meters away from a vertical wall (or set a scale plate 50 meters away from the laser). Switch the laser on and aim X1 towards the wall (or scale plate), as depicted below: X1 X1 H1 X2 H2 50 Meters 13

15 2. Allow the unit to level and begin rotating. Mark the beam position on the wall or scale plate as H1. 3. Loosen the screw of the tripod, and then turn the laser 180. Allow the unit to level and rotate, mark the beam position on the wall or scale plate as H2. The difference between the value of H1 and H2 should be less than 10 mm. 4. Repeat the same process to check your Y-axis beam. Again, the difference between the values of the two measurements should be less than 10 mm. 5. If the difference in either axis is more than 10mm, the laser should be sent to your authorized dealer for service / calibration 14
