14 GritLine Advantages Chances: A switch from a polished austenitic to a less expensive GritLine ferritic *) may be possible. Easier cleaning Limits: Reworking of a GritLine part may lead to a patchy surface appearance. Different colour between ferritics (bluish) and austenics (yellowish) must be taken into account when in combination. *) Details should be discussed with Product Service. 14

15 Laser One World Trade Center New development with much know-how for the One World Trade Center in New York City (Height: 541 m) Architects: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (USA) Inauguration: End of 2013 Surface finish: 2M (Laser) Delivered quantity: app. 200 t Comments: Pattern designed especially for this building. 15

16 Laser One World Trade Center The architects requested a surface finish with a random structure and brighter than the wellestablished Linen pattern. These requests could have been fulfilled by the already available Top Pearl pattern. Top Pearl Linen But, random surface structures turned out to be inapplicable for large façade panels. 16

17 Laser One World Trade Center Elimination of the rhombus structure Starting point: A pattern with a seemingly random structure is made up of many single elements in repeating order, e.g. 80 mm x 80 mm. For example, as in opaque windows. Effect: The boundaries between the single elements can be detected when viewing a building clad with such panels. The human eye is quite sensitive for recognizing visual regularities. Single element Starting point 17

18 Laser One World Trade Center Elimination of the rhombus structure Solution: Digitization of the micro-pattern elements and irregular rearrangement of these. Single elements are not repeatedly arranged. The human eye does not notice the exact shape of the micro-pattern elements in a façade cladding when viewing from a normal distance. Variations of micro-pattern elements are therewith possible. Technique: near far Micropattern element The micro-pattern elements are digitized, i.e. converted into figures with only right angles. These are then arranged per random generator. Larger empty spaces are filled with tiny squares. 18

20 Laser One World Trade Center The new surface pattern Laser generates the first stainless steel surface with a genuine random structure, i.e. without pattern repeat. Under all viewing angles and light conditions an absolutely homogeneous surface is observed. The architecture of the One World Trade Center is accentuated by stainless steel edge elements with the innovative design surface Laser. 20
