2 ❶ SELECT THE CORRECT GEM CUTTING DISC ❶ REVIEW THE GEM QUICK REFERENCE CHART (BELOW). ❷ ASK THE PATIENT if they know ring s material. ❸ WHEN IN DOUBT begin with the #224 carbide (BLUE) disc. If it doesn t immediately cut the metal, change to the #223 diamond (RED) disc.

3 ❷ INSTALLING THE GEM CUTTING DISC ❶ Press your thumb against the mandrel to prevent it from turning. ❷ Unscrew the disc screw from the mandrel. ❸ Push the disc screw through the hole in the center of the disc. ❹ Use the small screwdriver supplied with the system to tightly secure the disc to the mandrel. ❸ USING THE GEM FINGER GUARD ❶ LUBRICATE: Liberally apply KY or a similar product to the ring and the surrounding skin surface. This makes it easier to insert the guard, cools the ring and picks up any metal dust. ❷ POSITION THE GUARD: The finger guard is flexible; it can be bent, even into a U to fit under even an embedded ring. Slide the guard between the ring and the finger. ❸ MATE THE GUARD TO THE DRIVE UNIT: The channel of the finger guard is designed to precisely guide the disc in order to produce an accurate cut.

❷ Connect adapter to receptacle on GEM drive unit. CAUTION: ONLY USE THE AC ADAPTER SUPPLIED WITH YOUR GEM TITANIUM SYSTEM.

4 ❹ (#552) INSERT THE BATTERY CASSETTE: ❶ Unscrew the drive unit s end cap ❷ Slide the cassette into the drive unit in the direction of the arrows on the drive unit and cassette and secure the end cap tightly. (#622) CONNECTING THE AC ADAPTER: ❶ Plug adapter into wall outlet. ❷ Connect adapter to receptacle on GEM drive unit. CAUTION: ONLY USE THE AC ADAPTER SUPPLIED WITH YOUR GEM TITANIUM SYSTEM. ❺ CUT THE RING ❹ PRESS THE RED BUTTON TO ACTIVATE: Use eye protection. ❺ BRING ROTATING DISC IN CONTACT TO RING S SURFACE. 5 ❻ REMOVE THE RING ❶ MAKE A SINGLE CUT AND USE THE GEM RING SPREADER INSTRUMENT (Order code #250). ❷ MAKE TWO CUTS, TO PRESERVE THE SETTING OR FOR TITANIUM, TUNGSTEN CARBIDE AND COBALT. ❼ REPLACE DULL CUTTING DISCS Diamond (RED) cutting disc: run your finger along its edge, if the edge is smooth, discard. Carbide (BLUE) disc: if the carbide is worn down to the point that it will not cut completely through a ring, discard the disc. WARNING A DULL CUTTING DISC CREATES EXCESSIVE HEAT, WILL NOT CUT THE RING AND CAN LEAD TO DAMAGE THE DRIVE UNIT.

6 ❽ OVERCOMING PROBLEMS SYMPTOM CORRECTIVE ACTIONS Cuts slowly DON T PRESS DOWN! Cutting disc is dull or worn. Replace. Install new AA batteries (model #522) Ring gets hot RE-APPLY KY OR SIMILAR. Don t cut into the finger guard. Check progress frequently. Wrong cutting disc or cutting disc is dull or worn. CARE OF GEM AFTER USE ❶ Remove the cutting disc from the drive unit. If blood is present scrub disc with soft brush and water; soak in sterilizing solution according to the manufacturer s directions; towel dry disc and put away in its container. ❷ Wipe guard and drive unit with alcohol or germicidal wipe such as San-Cloth HB to disinfect. ❸ Return all components to carrying case.

7 REPAIRS There are no field replaceable parts in the GEM system. It should be returned to Mooney & Co. for repair. Any attempt to disassemble the drive unit, not specifically authorized, will invalidate the warranty. WARRANTY The GEM drive unit is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year after date of purchase.
