4 News l e t t e r From the Editor The 2011 Annual General Meeting concluded the activities of the College for past one year. A new cabinet of office bearers for years was elected. Dr. CHIANG Chung Seung retired from the Presidency, which was taken up by our previous President-Elect, Dr. WONG Kwok Yiu Chris. Dr. CHAN Kam Tim was elected President-Elect. Dr. Li Shu Kin and Dr. Lau Suet Ting were elected Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer respectively. Mrs. Peggy CHEUNG and Messers Walter Ma & Co. were appointed Hon. Legal Adviser and Hon. Auditor respectively for the years An Extraordinary General Meeting was held to further amend the Memorandum & Articles of Association. This enables the College to meet the requirements to relieve the College from tax burden. The Cardiovascular Interventional Summit 2011 (CIS) was held on November It demonstrated the state of art advance technology and skill in management of cardiac disease, in particular in the invasive therapy of coroanry artery disease. They were well attended by Collage members, local professionals, and overseas participants. The recent months were also busy for community activities. The World Heart Day was cerebrated on 2 October. Its related activities had already started with the Press Conference and the Kick-Off ceremony on 12 September. The programme for this year was extended to include a debate on health issue between medical students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong. This Newsletter aims to keep members updated with the current activities of the College. This could also serve as a meeting point of ideas as well as a mean of fraternity. Fresh ideas and feedbacks are most welcome. Lastly, I like to wish every member of the College a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as well as a prosperous year of the Dragon. 5 Local Scientific Activities Cardiovascular Interventional Summit Hong Kong 2011 (CIS), November 2011 The Cardiovascular Interventional Summit 2011 (CIS) was successfully held on November 2011 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Summit was organized by the Hong Kong College of Cardiology, Guangdong Provincial Cardiovascular Association and the Southern China Interventional Cardiology Education Net. The number of participants had exceeded over 600 this year. Guest-of-Honor - Mrs. FAN HSU Lai Tai, Rita 2011 December Lectures focused on advancement in cardiovascular intervention were held on November The speakers shared their clinical experiences in CTO, PCI and IVUS. Live Demonstrations were held on 19 November 2011, performed by Etsuo TSUCHIKANE, Dr. Eugene B WU, Prof. Bryan YAN, Prof. YU Cheuk Man in Prince of Wales Hospital. Dr. WONG Kwok Yiu, Chris The Opening Ceremony in the afternoon of 19 November 2011 was honoured with the presence of Mrs. FAN HSU Lai Tai, Rita, Member of the Hong Kong delegation to the Eleventh National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China. Other Officiating Guests included Prof. LIN Shu Guang, Prof. GE Jun Bo, Prof. YONG Huo, Dr. CHEN Ji Yan, Prof. DU Zhi Min and Dr. WONG Kwok Yiu. The major highlight of CIS 2011 was the new session: PCR in CIS with collaboration with Euro PCR, it provided an effective means for transfer of knowledge, skills, and insights from world renowned experts and experience shared with participants. Riding on the great success in 2010, Hong Kong Heart Foundation: PCI Case Discussion Competition was Opening Ceremony organized again this year. This was a good chance to recognize the efforts of our colleagues, and also a great opportunity to stimulate further discussions about the cases or related topics. Cases were presented at the Summit and six winning cases were selected. 6 News l e t t e r Taking Oral Antiplatelet into the Next Decade in Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Management, 22 November 2011 This scientific meeting was held in the evening of 22 November 2011, at Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok, Kowloon. The platelet is central to the pathophysiology of ACS, and antiplatelet therapy has become a cornerstone of ACS management. Novel oral antiplatelet therapies including the adenosine diphosphate antagonist ticagrelor have generated substantial interest as they have demonstrated a faster onset of action, more predictable patient response and greater efficacy compared with clopidogrel. This meeting provided an opportunity to catch up on the latest developments and thinking in the field. The meeting was chaired by Dr. LAU Suet Ting and Dr. TSE Kai Fat, Hon. Treasurer and Council Member, Hong Kong College of Cardiology, respectively. The speakers were Dr. Peter J LIN and Prof. Alistair HALL. Dr. LIN is Director of Primary Care Initiatives, Canadian Heart Research Centre, Toronto, Canada. Prof. HALL is Professor of Clinical Cardiology. University of Leeds, UK. Dr. LIN talked on Acute Coronary Syndrome in Primary Care. Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) describes a collection of conditions which involve chest pain, and are based on plaque ruptures with platelet formation. The resulting stenosis or obstruction causes chest pain. There are three types of ACS patients that might present in a primary care office. The first is acute chest pain right now. For these patients the treatment would be referral into the emergency department for an immediate workup. The second type of patient comes with a history of chest pain. These patients need appropriate workup in an outpatient setting. Choosing the right tests is the key. Finally the post-acs patient is the most challenging. One needs to ensure that they are taking all the required agents dual antiplatelet, statins, beta blockers, etc. If a stent was used then the issue of bare metal or drug-eluting stent becomes important. The appropriate management of all three types of patients, and the therapies that have clear, proven benefits were addressed to. In addition, the pre-acs patient and the types of risk assessment tools and preventative strategies which could protect thems from ever having ACS were also discussed. The title of Professor HALL s lecture was Taking Oral Antiplatelet into the Next Decade in Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Management. The death rate following acute myocardial infarction (MI) has been halved over the last ten years in many Western countries. The basis for these changes appears to be early use of effective antiplatelet therapy with joint aspirin and clopidogrel therapy having been the norm. However, the occurrence of resistance to clopidogrel has become well documented. Recently the use of ticagrelor as compared to clopidogrel was demonstrated to produce superior cardiovascular outcomes despite a similar rate of major bleeding.

8 News l e t t e r International Scientific Conferences 14 th South China International Congress of Cardiology, April 2012 The 14 th South China International Congress of Cardiology (SCC) will be coming soon from April 2012 at Dongfang hotel, Guangzhou, China. It is the biggest and most well attended cardiology congress in this part of China. 14 News l e t t e r Jump Rope for Heart Program (JRFH) In this academic year ( ), 131 schools have registered for the Jump Rope for Heart program. 6 heart health talks, 2 anti-drugs talks and 7 school visits by expert teams were conducted at schools respectively. Very positive response was received. The JRFH Finance Committee approved granting HK$50,000 to sponsor the World Heart Day 2011 and HK$50,000 to financially support the Secondary Schools Fruit Promotion Project under the EatSmart@school Campaign organized by Department of Health (School Year 2011/2012). The JRFH Rope Skipping Instructor Workshop was successfully held on 27 November 2011 (Sunday) at TWGHs Sin Chu Wan Primary School. 83 teachers and elite skippers (out of 102 enrollments) attended the workshop. They were taught the techniques and teaching skills, and learned more about the Jump Rope for Heart Program. A one-day seminar among technical judges and experienced skipping coaches was held on 16 October 2011 (Sunday) at the Chinese Young Men s Christian Association of Hong Kong. After evaluation and thorough discussion, the scoring method of the JRFH Inter-school Rope Skipping Competition was modified and fine-tuned so that it would be more easily rated and manpower can be saved.
