I hope everyone had a great summer season and the kids are looking forward to going back to school! The WGA s annual picnic/pioneer awards dinner, as well as the fieldtrip, was held on Friday August 10th this year and I think everyone can agree that it was a success. The field trip covered a wealth of roadside geology around Alcova Reservoir. Thank you once again to Terry Logue who generously donated his time to run the trip. Also, congratulations to our pioneer award recipients for this year! Dixie Eaton received the Honorary Member award. Dr. Kent Sundell received the Distinguished Service award. And Bruce Larson of Energy Fuels received the Frank A. Morgan Award. Again, Congratulations to all award recipients. On August 24th, we will put to a vote amongst the membership to stick with bi-monthly meetings or keep going with meeting every week for the luncheons. If you want your vote heard please remember to RSVP, and come for the meeting on August 24th. 2 Friday, September 14, 2018 Topic: Speakers: Restoring constitutionally protected liberties and the rule of law after eight years of Obama William Perry Pendley Affiliation: Mountain States Legal Foundation Summary: William Perry Pendley, President of Mountain States Legal Foundation, was born and raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming, received B.A. and M.A. degrees in Economics and Political Science from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, and received his J.D. from the University of Wyoming College of Law, where he was Senior Editor on Land and Water Law Review. He served as an attorney to former Senator Clifford P. Hansen (R-Wyoming) and to the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee. During the Reagan Administration, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy and Minerals of the Department of Interior, where he authored President Reagan's National Minerals Policy and Exclusive Economic Zone proclamation. He was a consultant to former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman, Jr., and was engaged in the private practice of law in the Washington, D.C., area before his return to the West in He has argued cases before the Supreme Court of the United States as well as various federal courts of appeals; he won what Time called a "legal earthquake" when the Supreme Court ruled in his favor in the historic Adarand (equal protection) case. His monthly column, Summary Judgment, appears throughout the country; he is the author of five books: It Takes A Hero (1994); War on the West (1995); Warriors for the West (2006); Sagebrush Rebel (2013), and Summary Judgment (2015). He is admitted to practice law in Wyoming, Colorado, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Wyoming Geological Association September

8 The WSGS has developed an online map depicting information about the state's mines and mineral resources such as mine locations, geology, historical data, mineralogy, and chemical analyses. The Mines and Minerals Map also offers geologic interpretations, based on a variety of sources, that provide perspective on mineral commodity host rocks and geologic environment. The map is a work in progress. It currently has information on more than 3,000 sites, and that number will continue to rise as more data is added continuously. Sites depicted on the map vary from historical and contemporary mines to prospects and sample locations. Data includes coal, aggregates, uranium, metals, and other minerals, specifically addressing analyses for the 35 mineral commodities deemed critical to U.S. economic and national security. The Mines and Minerals Map is the fourth interactive data map launched by the WSGS in two years and similarly will be updated routinely as more information becomes available. Others are the Oil and Gas Map of Wyoming, Geochronology Map of Wyoming, and a Groundwater Atlas of Wyoming. All WSGS online data maps are free to access. Wyoming Geological Association September

9 Ellen Reid, wife of longtime WGA member, Steve Reid, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Wyoming Medical Center from complications related to cancer. Ellen bravely fought a 21 year battle with breast cancer. Ellen was born November 16, 1947 in Belleville, Illinois. Growing up, the family relocated often due to her father s distinguished military career. After high school Ellen worked as a flight attendant which allowed her to travel extensively. Eventually, she began working as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Casper. She retired after 30 years. After retiring Ellen participated in the Master Gardener program. Ellen loved all living things whether it be flowers, plants, animals or people. She did not judge people and accepted everyone as they were. Ellen loved music of all kinds, especially jazz and blues. She participated in the Wyoming Blues & Jazz Society and attended several blues music trips and cruises. She was a wonderful cook and we will all miss her amazing green chili. Never to be forgotten, of course, was Ellen s amazing sense of humor and how she made us all laugh. Ellen will be forever remembered by her husband and best friend Steve, her stepson, Jeff Reid, and stepdaughter, Stephanie (Eric) Sneesby. Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, Paul Wesley Airey (the first Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force) and Shirley Elizabeth Babbitt, and her brother, Shawn Airey. She is survived by her brother Dale (Norma) Airey and nephews Paul (Cara) and Sean (Elizabeth) Airey and their children. A celebration of Ellen s life was held on August 17, In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Ellen to the American Cancer Society or Casper Humane Society.
