2 LETTER FROM THE CEO HELPING MORE PEOPLE In 2016, Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay was hard at work establishing our brand, our community support, and the way we do business. Our cleaner look and organized stores set the standard for better customer service and a stronger connection to our customers. We rebranded our Brentwood and Livermore stores to showcase what s coming in the years ahead. We had another ground-breaking year of putting over 1,200 people to work through our job training and job placement programs. The relationships with our employers and our county partners in Solano and Contra Costa counties are really paying off for those who need our help finding competitive employment. We launched a new Strategic Plan that helps us focus on the next three years with Strategic Objectives that set the stage for our organization heading into the future. Our Strategic Plan is called Charting The Course and we did just that as we set records in 2016 with our Power of Work Gala. Aboard a boat in Alameda, we toured the waters and celebrated individuals who have graduated from our programs and are now working and supporting their families. We had a lot of fun and raised money to help even more jobseekers go to work. 4 SUCCESS STORY Eileen Phillips I m blessed to be able to say I have worked for such a unique and compassionate organization. In 2016 we introduced the John Latchford Award, an award named after Goodwill of the Greater East Bay s CEO of 16 years, John Latchford. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies what Goodwill is all about giving people the opportunity to not only live a life of purpose, but to help those around them do the same. They live the mission. Eileen enjoys going to work every day and seeing her employees, whom she lovingly calls her kids, and seeing all of the customers. My employees have taught me so much. Not only have they taught me compassion and understanding, but take Belene Zarate for example: she takes the time to teach me sign language. They teach me as much as I can teach them. The innaugural recipient was Eileen Phillips. Eileen came to Calidad Industries and Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay in 1994 as a mess attendant at Coast Guard Island. With 13 years in the food industry under her belt she advanced quickly. Within three years she was promoted to manager and has been there since. Every day Eileen welcomes people into the dining room, and surrounds you and her employees with love, and in a way that only a mama bear can, says Virginia Robbins, COO of Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay. This job has given me such a broad expanse of understanding people and why they do what they do, Eileen said. What are her career aspirations? At this point I want to be able to retire happy, healthy, and strong. I look forward to continuing to practice being a good, little old lady sitting in my recliner relaxing and reading.
