E-News Bulletin MAY 2010 Vol. 4, No 5 May 28, 2010 Presidentʼs Perspective: Red Dog Moves Forward When Teck decided to move forward and develop the Aqqaluk Deposit last week we all breathed a sigh of relief. Simply put, this decision means Red Dog Mine will continue operations. Teck and NANA have been in discussion with the Environmental Protection Agency over renewal of Red Dogʼs main water discharge permit. Helvi Sandvik Over the past few months there was mounting concern there might be an interruption of mine operations. There are still challenges to overcome, but last weekʼs announcement is a step in the right direction. It was a process that had to play out, yet it still made many of us at NANA and Teck uneasy. Red Dog is more than a mine. Red Dog is a source of economic stability and growth for Alaskaʼs Northwest Arctic Borough. It creates good jobs in an area of Alaska where economic opportunities are few. The mine funds local government, supports schools, provides scholarships and sustains important social and cultural programs that help preserve the way of life for NANAʼs more than 12,000 shareholders. We take pride in being stewards of our land. Red Dog Mine is committed to meeting the highest environmental standards and complying with all environmental laws and regulations. Keeping Red Dog working for the next two decades is good for our shareholders, our region, and our state. Continued operations are also vital for all our NANA companies that provide essential services to the mine, from security to food service to transportation. IN THIS ISSUE President's Perspective: Red Dog Moves Forward NANA Shareholders and Businesses Benefit from ANSEP Encouragement & Support Equal Cap and Gown Partnership Provides Opportunities for NANA Shareholders Construction Commences on New Nullagvik Hotel WHPacific on a Roll with Aviation Contracts NMS President Mary Quin Inducted into Prestigious Athena Society Download a printable PDF Have a Story? Charles Fedullo NANA Public Relations Director charles.fedullo@nana.com Thank you to all of those who stood up to let the public know how important Red Dog Mine is to NANA and to our people.

Read more in a news release issued by NANA and a Teck news release. Sincerely, Helvi Sandvik President NANA Development Corporation NANA Shareholders and Businesses Benefit from ANSEP Since its inception in 1995, NANA companies have partnered with the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP ) at the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The program is known for its successful recruitment and retention rates through hands-on high school outreach initiatives, rigorous summer bridging programs, focused academic learning communities, networks of peer and professional mentors, community-based learning, professional internships 2010 ANSEP grad Mike Johnson, a NANA shareholder employed by DOWL HKM and undergraduate research projects. ANSEP has successfully increased the number of Alaska Natives and Native Americans entering the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and produced 149 graduates since Today there are some 200 ANSEP students enrolled in the program. We love working with NANA and their commitment to keeping this partnership alive and strong, said ANSEP Deputy Director Michele Yatchmeneff. Throughout the life of the partnerships, NANA companies have provided funding as well as internship opportunities while in return gaining dedicated and skilled employees. Two such companies are NANA WorleyParsons and DOWL HKM both supporters of ANSEP and its graduates. ANSEP really does give any student with the will to succeed the way to succeed, said DOWL HKM President Stewart G. Osgood. The programʼs

success is easily measured in the number of graduates who receive degrees every year itʼs very easy to get behind a program like that. The 2010 class of ANSEP students included two NANA shareholders: Zazell Staheli, a UAF biological sciences student originally from the village of Kiana, and Mike Johnson, a UAA senior studying civil engineering. Mike has one class remaining and has been working continuously with DOWL HKM since the fall of He has worked approximately 20 hours a week while taking a full load of classes. Itʼs been pretty nice working in the field gaining practical experience while going to school, says Mike. Itʼs cool to drive by the road and building projects I have been a part of while employed with DOWL. NANA shareholder Henry Horner, Jr., from Kobuk, recently graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School, in Sitka. He is entering the ANSEP Summer Bridge program in Anchorage this month and going to school full time at UAA in the fall. During the nine weeks of the Summer Bridge program, Henry will receive real life paid work experience as an intern, math preparation for his college classes, while meeting other students, and becoming eligible for education scholarships. Henry learned about ANSEP when representatives visited Mt. Edgecumbe and helped him, and other students build computers as part of a pre-college class. My math and science teachers also told me that civil engineering might be a good discipline for me to study, he said. Henry looks forward to pursuing his bachelorʼs degree in civil engineering and working in Anchorage for a company like DOWL HKM. His interest in NANA is a family affair. NANA shareholder Henry Horner, Jr., a recent high school graduate, is starting the ANSEP Summer Bridge program this month. It stems from his dad, Henry Horner, Sr., who has served on the NANA Regional Corporation and NDC Board of Directors for a number of years. My Mom, Rosa, is really proud of me and hopes that I further my education, adds Henry Jr. Encouragement & Support Equal Cap and Gown

Qivliq's Kim Adams, a recent MBA grad, and her mom Linda Adams, who is employed with NANA Development Corporation April showers bring May flowers, and just in time to spruce up graduation ceremonies across the country. Whether it is a graduate program, undergrad degree, high school, or even elementary school graduation it is a time to celebrate successes. NANA shareholder Kim Adams is one example of dozens of NANA shareholder graduation stories. Kim joined the NANA family as a summer intern in 2001 and has been working for Qivliq, LLC in payroll the past several years while going to school. She graduated on May 2nd with a masterʼs degree in business administration from the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), and acknowledges her co-workers and family for being the sources of inspiration to pursue a graduate degree. The 28-year-old originally from Kotzebue, Alaska, received significant encouragement from her mother, Linda Adams, who also works for NANA and sees the value in education. Linda is close to completing a paralegal degree from UAA. Kim is also thankful for scholarships from the Aqqaluk Trust and Kotzebue IRA that helped pay for her degree. Qivliq has been good about offering me projects to work on that have broadened my experience in accounting and finance as I furthered my education. It has certainly helped me to grow in my profession, says Kim. Lewis Hitzel walks along Capitol Hill in D.C. From Dishwasher to Business Leader Another NANA shareholder who has found immense growth opportunities while employed at NANA is Lewis Nasuuqruq Hitzel. He is currently employed with Qivliq Commercial Group, LLC where he manages the Minority Business Enterprise Program Development.

The focus of the position is creating commercial business opportunities by marketing Qivliqʼs diverse portfolio of IT & telecommunications, energy savings and management, and call centers. Born in Kotzebue, but part of a military family, Lewis moved around a lot while growing up. After attending four high schools, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma. With his degree, he packed up his old Nissan and moved home to Alaska. He started off on a hospitality career path as a dishwasher at The Arctic Caribou Inn in Deadhorse, working up to a supervisory position at Red Dog Mine in While he knew that the mine was not leveraging his degree, he wasnʼt certain what his direction should be. It was a meeting with former NANA President John Rense that steered him on his current path. In December 1999, he moved to the East Coast to become a management intern with Akima, a NANA company, to learn federal procurement. The 6-month internship has transitioned into an 11-year career and his current job for Qivliq. Lewis, while working full time, recently earned his masterʼs degree in business administration from Strayer University, located outside of Washington, D.C. His drive to grow his executive skills and become a more effective business leader led him to pursue the graduate degree. My business experiences were very unique and the timing of the challenges we faced as a company was perfect for me to attend graduate school, says Lewis. I can recall stressful moments when the last thing I wanted to do was to drive to school after work or log-in at some hotel on business travel. My wife, Danielle, was a key supporter and I have much to thank her for, Lewis adds. NANA Development Corporation applauds each and every individual who is celebrating a graduation. Partnership Provides Opportunities for NANA Shareholders

Three Alaska Native shareholders finish a 12-hour work shift at Turner Industries. New skills and on-the-job training, that is what more than 90 Alaska Native corporation shareholders, predominately from the NANA region, received last month. It is part of a partnership between NANA Development Corporation and Turner Industries, a Baton Rouge based industrial maintenance/turnaround /construction company. After completing five days of safety and skills training in Anchorage, the workers went to Gonzales, La., to remove and replace catalysts and provide maintenance services in a petrochemical plant. They were scheduled to stay two weeks, but Turner, impressed with their skill, speed and efficiency on the job, asked that the workers stay another week. More than half did. NANA Operations Manager Sandy Shroyer Beaver managed the workers. She stayed in a hotel with them and helped organize six teams. Three teams worked the day shift, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., three worked night side, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. NANA Vice President of Business Development Clyde Gooden stayed on site with the shareholders as well. He was amazed with Sandyʼs ability to communicate with the employees and support contractors. Sandy showed great leadership and an ability to connect with all the workers, as well as manage the transportation, catering and hotel services. Clyde continued, We all worked our tails off, but Sandy was able to be honest and constructive with all involved in the project. She is a pleasure to work with. Mamie Karmun, from Qivliq, and Naomi Munik Chappell, from NANA Development, Turner Industries is located in Baton Rouge

also worked tirelessly to make the project a success. Kristina Patrick and her Shareholder Development team helped recruit and screen the workers. NANA provided the workers transportation to and from their hometown, lodging, ground transportation, meals and compensation while they trained in Anchorage and worked in Louisiana. Workers now have an opportunity to take their earnings back to their village to help prepare them for the summer subsistence harvest season. They will also be able to use the skills they learned to help them find employment. Turner Maintenance Manager David Eastridge says, This is the second time we have partnered with NANA in this capacity. We see it as a win win. He continues, NANA brings trained workers to help our company and also grow the economy in Louisiana by using local hotels, caterers and ground services. Everybody wins. Construction Commences on New Nullagvik Hotel L to R, NRC President Marie Greene, former Nullagvik Chair Robbie Kirk, NDC President Helvi Sandvik, NRC Chairman Don Sheldon, and NDC Chairman Luke Sampson with a rendering of the new hotel Since 1975, the Nullagvik Hotel has been a mainstay in the heart of the NANA region since it opened in Kotzebue which is located 26 miles above the Arctic Circle in Alaska. Now a new Nullagvik Hotel is under construction and anticipated to be completed in the fall of The first phase of the new hotel project offers 78 well-appointed guestrooms including seven suites for NANA shareholders and other visitors to the NANA region, a meeting room to accommodate up to 100 people, a full-service restaurant, and an observation deck overlooking Kotzebue Sound. The hotel is owned by Nullagvik LLC, a 100 percent owned NANA subsidiary.

Several other NANA companies are working on the construction project: NANA Development Corporation is overseeing the real estate and financing of the hotel project, WHPacific provided the architectural and interior design, NANA WorleyParsons is assisting with the mechanical design, DOWL HKM is providing civil engineering, NANA Construction is overseeing the hotel construction and managing the general contractor SKW Eskimos, Inc., a subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, while NMS Lodging Division will manage the operation of the new property. "The team of NANA companies is excited to be working on the new Nullagvik Hotel, which is a very important project to the NANA region," said Chris Teich, NANA Development Corporation vice president of real estate and hotel development. NANAʼs Shareholder Development department is also working closely on the project to promote employment opportunities and recruit NANA shareholders during and after the construction phase. One such shareholder is Gary Baldwin, who has been hired as the field engineer for NANA Construction. He is working along with seven other NANA shareholders that make up the current 11-person onsite team. As the construction progresses, there will be a need to hire a variety of jobs, including laborers, carpenters, carpenter helpers, electricians, plumbers, sheet metal workers, roofers, heavy equipment operators, insulators, painters, and for flooring and other interior work. Construction management and civil engineering students are also encouraged to inquire about employment opportunities. Ongoing news about the construction of the new Nullagvik Hotel will be available in June on the NANA Construction web site at A rendering of the new Nullagvik Hotel in Kotzebue, Alaska WHPacific on a Roll with Aviation Contracts

WHPacific aviation team members make a site visit to Aztec Municipal Airport for runway redesign. Congratulations to the WHPacific Albuquerque aviation group who holds a 90-percent reselection rate for contract renewals with existing clients for recently being awarded four reselect contracts in New Mexico. In the city of Truth or Consequences (named after a 1950s TV show), WHPacific is continuing as the engineering firm for the local airport that has been a WHPacific client since WHPacific also won another four-year, multi-term contract at the Farmington Four Corners Regional Airport. WHPacific has and will continue to provide the on-call engineering runway rehabilitation, master plans and updates, new perimeter fence and gates, landside roads, and parking area re-construction. Additionally, a four-year, re-select contract at the Aztec Municipal Airport will focus on runway reconstruction, apron construction, and runway lighting systems; while in the city of Deming the aviation group is in the process of updating the master plan for the municipal airport during another four-year contract. Weʼve worked with some of these aviation clients for upwards of 20 to 25 years, and I commend our staff for providing superior customer service and working closely with our clients before, during, and after these projects, says Dumas Slade, who heads up the Albuquerque aviation department and has been with WHPacific for 27 years The runway in Truth or Consequences, N.M., is a project of WHPacific.

NMS President Mary Quin Inducted into Prestigious Athena Society Mary P. Quin, president of NMS, was one of 14 Anchorage women recognized for advancing business and inspiring others in the local community during an induction ceremony into the Anchorage ATHENA Society last month. The ATHENA Society is a program of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and a local chapter of ATHENA International. In its 16th year, it is comprised of 230 local business professionals who have exemplified professional excellence, a commitment to their community, and encouragement for the leadership potential of other women. NMS President Mary P. Quin There have been huge changes in womenʼs access to business opportunities during my career. It is exciting to see younger women taking advantage of all the doors that are now open to them. I encourage them to use their talents, creativity and hard work, not only to achieve financial and professional success for themselves, but through business, to help build a better future and a safer world for their own children, said Mary. Since 2006, Mary has led NMS a company that provides support services to Alaska businesses and institutions in food and facilities management, camp services, security, hotel management and workforce solutions and been instrumental in growing the company into a supplier of management and support services nationally. Of NANA and NMS, she says, I enjoy working with a great organization of people who really care about the company and each other. Before joining NMS, Quin worked for big corporations such as Xerox and Kodak, as well as startup companies, in research and development, marketing, sales, product development, and strategy functions before going into management. Mary received a doctorate in materials engineering from Northwestern University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
