I welcome and encourage folks to call those and any other errors to my attention.] State of South Carolina Pickens District: SS On this fifth day of October 1835 Personally appeared before the Honorable Josiah J Evans one of the Associate Judges of the said State in the Court of Sessions & Common Pleas for said District at Pickens Court House William Clark resident in Pickens District State aforesaid, age seventy-eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7th That he entered the Army of the United States as a volunteer & did the following services under the following named officers viz. In the year 1777 he was living in the part of North Carolina called Washington County, now in the State of Tennessee and was called on & turned out under Captain Thomas Price under Colonel John Sevier, and was stationed most of the time at Sevier support on Nole Chucky [Nolichucky] River in Washington County and was frequently out on duty against the Cherokee Indians was in no regular Battle with them, does not recollect if he got a discharge, what he did with it He thinks he was dismissed in the spring of the year And afterwards in 1778 he reentered the service under Captain Valentine Sevier the Company rendezvoused at the Long Island on Holston River and went down in canoes to the Chickamauga towns, and took 40 or 50 horses 40 head cattle some deer skins the Indians fled & left what they could not carry stayed two weeks in their towns & returned having been out about six weeks on this Tour; having taken one prisoner who broke and one of the Company shot & killed him. In the fall of the year 1780 He was called on to serve a tour of three months & was in the service under command of Captain Asher and was with him one of the Guard to the Commissioners & surveyors who ran the line between Virginia and North Carolina, beginning somewhere near Long Islands on Holston & went with them on a westerly course running the line which he now supposes divides Tennessee & Kentucky was out three months at least this time. 3. In the year 1781 Entered the service again in the fall of the year under Captain Williams in Colonel John Sevier's Regiment and joined General Marion's Army on Santee River near to Moncks Corner, and was stationed there took a Garrison of the British there of about 100 men as it was said about the time we joined Marion's Army we heard of the defeat of Lord Cornwallis at York Town & the surrender of his Army

2 In the year 1782, Captain Alexander Moore raised a company of volunteers & went under Colonel John Sevier to go against the Cherokee Indians who were troublesome and he was with him one month at the least. He served in the first tour six months} He cannot 2 nd 1 13/30 } at this time say 3 rd 3 } Positively he 4 3 } did Serve } months & 13 Months 14 & 13 days} days but he Feels confident He did serve not less than 14 months as he has above stated. He did do other service & was in some Battles with the Indians but cannot now recollect the times or officers & therefore does not specify them He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of any agency in any State He does not know of any witnesses to prove his Services except his Brother George Clark 1 who lived with him in the same House & was with him and all the Service except against the Chickamauga what Towns six weeks & he went then to the Long Islands with us as he states And Ferrell McGaha who was also with us in all these tours except the one running the line between North Carolina and Virginia as he also states in his affidavit He also states in answer to the Interrogatories which are required by the War Department to be put to Applicants 1 st Born in Shenandoah County Virginia 7th April He has a Record of his age in his Bible at his House near Waltons Ford in Pickens District which he took from his Father's Family Bible. 3. He lived in Washington County NC during the war in the year 1784 he came to Pendleton County & settled on the same place now in Pickens District where he has lived ever since. 4. He was a volunteer generally & believes he was a volunteer each time. 5. He was acquainted with Captain Shelby or Colonel Shelby General Marion, Colonel Maham, Major Jesse Walton was adjutant of Colonel Sevier's Regiment & Colonel Robinson & does not recollect being acquainted with others 6. Does not recollect of getting any discharge if he did, it is lost long since. 7. He is acquainted with Colonel Joseph Grisham, Colonel Robert Anderson, Colonel John C Kilpatrick & he is willing for all the Citizens of the District to testify to his character for truth. Sworn to & subscribed the day and year aforesaid before S/ William L Keith, CC S/ Wm Clark [Benjamin D DuPre, a clergyman, and Joseph Grisham gave the standard supporting affidavit.] [fn p. 14] State of Illinois Wayne County Before me Samuel Leech a Justice of the peace in and for said County, Personally appeared George Clark who after being duly sworn deposeth and saith that sometime in the year 1 George Clark S32179

3 1777, Himself & William Clark were called on and served as a militia soldiers in the Revolutionary War in the State of Tennessee six months and the most of the time we were at Sevier's Station under the command of Captain Thomas Price and were attached to Colonel John Sevier's Regiment; and in the year 1778 the said William Clark was again called out & performed a tower [tour] of duty of six weeks against the Chickamauga what Indians, under the command of Captain Valentine Sevier; That the company rendezvoused at Long Island on the River Holston in the State of Tennessee, to which Place he the said George Clark went with the said William Clark & then returned That he the said George Clark & the said William Clark were again called out in 1780 and served as revolutionary soldiers a tower of three months under the command of Captain Asher at the time the line was run between North Carolina & Virginia, as he was compelled to have a guard at that time, We were then called on & I served as a militia soldier with the said William Clark a three months tower in the year 1781 under the command of Captain Williams in General Marion's Army in the State of South Carolina & we were present at the taking of the British Garrison near Charleston at Moncks Corner. Then in the year 1782 we were called on and I served one month with the said William Clark under the command of Captain Alexander Moore against the Cherokee Indians in the State of Tennessee, and at another time as well as I can recollect I served a short tower with the said William Clark against the Cherokee Indians but do not recollect the exact time nor the commanding officers' names. I was present in all the aforesaid towers of service (except the tower against the Chickamauga what Indians in 1778 with the said William Clark and he rendered the aforesaid services as a Revolutionary Soldier to the best of my recollection. The said William Clark & myself are Brothers and we served together as before stated. S/ George Clark, X his mark Sworn to & subscribed before me this 10th July 1835 [fn p. 79] State of South Carolina Personally appeared Ferrell McGaha 2 before me and made oath in due form of law That he was well acquainted with William Clark of Washington County North Carolina during the Revolutionary War That in the year 1784 this the said McGaha and Clark moved into Pendleton County South Carolina and he has known him ever since This deponent was with the said Clark in months service in the Revolutionary War the first Tour of six months under Captain Thomas Price of Colonel Sevier's Regiment was with him near two months against the Indians at Chickamauga towns as well as he recollects he thinks they were over six weeks out at that time He was with the said Clark a tour of three months under Captain Williams went down into the State of South Carolina was at Moncks corner joined General Marion was with the said Clark under Captain A. Moore against the Cherokee Indians a month or more and was out with him at other times against the Cherokee Indians. Sworn to fifth of October 1835 before me S/ Joseph Grisham, NP JUQ S/ Ferrell McGaha, X his mark [fn p. 9: On April 2, 1844 in Hall County Georgia, Mrs. Ruth Clark, 77, on the 14th day of May next made application for a widow's pension under the 1838 act stating that she is the widow of William Clark 2 nd, a pensioner of the United States for his service in the revolutionary war; that 2 I could not find a federal pension application filed by a veteran of this or any similar name. Consequently, this may be the only record of this veteran service in the revolution.
