Dr. Peterson has over 20 years experience in industrial research and development in the areas of molecular biology, nucleic acids and genomics product and technology development. His experience encompasses clinical diagnostics, life science research products and pharmaceutical discovery technologies and market segments. Managing a global team of scientists, Dr. Peterson s team is currently focused upon development and commercialization of tools and technologies to accelerate synthetic biology research, development and applications. Prior to joining Life Technologies/Invitrogen in 2003, Dr. Peterson held research and development positions at Genicon Sciences, Trega Biosciences, Hybritech and Gen-Probe here his primary responsibilities focused on assay development and new technologies research. Dr. Peterson was a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute in Cologne Germany and received his Ph.D. in Microbiology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. 1

2 "Flying green: Why Airlines See a Bright Future in Biofuels Breakfast Plenary Sponsored by Date: Thursday, October 11, 2012 Time: 8:00am 9:30am Moderator: Ross MacFarlane, Senior Advisor, Business Partnerships, Climate Solutions Michael Lakeman, Regional Director, Biofuel Strategy, Boeing Commercial Airlines Michael Lakeman is a Regional Director of Biofuel Strategy at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, where he is responsible for developing and executing sustainable aviation fuel projects and engagements in Asia-Pacific. He also has lead responsibilities for shaping the Boeing biofuel technology strategy. Lakeman s interest in biofuel development stems from more than a decade in applied plant and algae science. He was awarded his doctorate from University of Washington s Biology Department, where he researched the effects of human land-use change on toxic algal blooms. In 2007, an opportunity to work at a Seattle start-up, Imperium Renewables, introduced him to the commercial realities of the biofuel sector, experience he has brought to the specific field of sustainable biofuels for aviation. A native of New Zealand, Lakeman attained his Bachelor of Science in Biological Chemistry from the University of Canterbury and began his employment working on crop improvement genetics at the New Zealand Institute of Crop and Food Research. He is truly excited to be involved in this field as it grows from ideas and concepts into real world commercial applications that can help address some of humankind s most important environmental and social issues. 3 "Overcoming Regional Biomass Feedstock Supply Challenges with Public Policy and Science Lunch Plenary Sponsored by Date: Thursday, October 11, 2012 Time: 11:30am 1:45pm Moderator: Paul Lansbergen, Association Secretary, Director (Energy, Economics, and Climate Change), Forest Products Association of Canada Desmond King, President, Chevron Technology Ventures Dr. Trevor Stuthridge, General Manager, Sustainable Design, Scion Dr Trevor Stuthridge is General Manager Sustainable Design at Scion, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute. Scion specializes in research, science and technology development for the forestry, wood product and wood-derived materials and other biomaterial sectors to create economic value and beneficial environmental and social outcomes for New Zealand. The Sustainable Design Group is dedicated to i) clean technologies, particularly in bioenergy/biofuels and waste management, ii) industrial ecology and life cycle management, and iii) optimising forest and wood processing sector value chains using advanced decision support tools and product design. Trevor has a PhD from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto and a member of technical/management committees for a broad range of international research organisations, universities and stakeholder companies. 3

4 Linda Beltz, Director, Technology Partnerships, Weyerhaueser Linda is currently Director, Technology Partnerships at Weyerhaeuser. In this role, Linda works with partners in emerging markets who share Weyerhaeuser s vision of biomass-based technology. Linda also implemented Open Innovation practices at Weyerhaeuser. Linda is responsible for alliances and partner activities with for-profit, non-profit, university and national labs. She is also responsible for government contracts. Linda has been with Weyerhaeuser over 11 years. Prior to her current role, she led the transition for Weyerhaeuser s biofuel JV with Chevron, Catchlight Energy, and held technical and market development leadership positions in the businesses. Before joining Weyerhaeuser, Linda worked with Mead and International Paper in technical leadership, capital project, manufacturing and scientist roles. Linda holds a Ph.D. and a B.S from the University of Washington in Pulp and Paper Engineering. She has also completed the Executive Business Program at Louisiana State University and is in the Executive Scholars Program at Kellogg School of Management. Linda is also a Certified New Product Development Professional through the Product Development and Management Association. Ross MacLachlan, President and CEO, Lignol (invited) Mike Jostrom, Director of Renewable Resources, Plum Creek Timber Company Mike Jostrom is the Director of Renewable Resources for Plum Creek Timber Company and is based in Seattle. Mike works on Plum Creek s business development team and is responsible for securing a positive policy and business environment for growing the renewable energy business. Mike has been with Plum Creek for over 30 years and has worked in forestry and timber management, habitat conservation planning, and more recently has led Plum Creek's forest productivity and harvest planning teams. Mike has a bachelor s degree in forest management from Washington State University and is a graduate of Harvard Business School's 4

5 Program for Management Development. He is a longtime member of the Society of American Foresters. 5

Baum, Chief Business Development Officer, Genomatica Charles R. Eggert, President and CEO, OPX Bio Chas is applying more than 30 years of experience in the global specialty-chemical industry to the leadership of OPXBIO. Prior to joining OPXBIO in September 2008, Chas was president of the Specialty Polymers Group, a $500 million revenue division of Akzo Nobel. Earlier, he held top management responsibility for the Food Ingredients - Europe and global Personal Care business units of ICI prior to the acquisition of ICI by Akzo Nobel. While at ICI, he was a board director of the American Chemistry Council. Chas began his career with Monsanto Company, progressing through roles in technology, manufacturing, business development, marketing, and general management. His work at Monsanto included an assignment as vice president of Monsanto Venture Capital. Chas is a board director of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), as well as a founding director and vice chairman of the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association. Chas earned an MBA in marketing and finance from Washington University in St. Louis and an M.S. in biochemical engineering from the University of Minnesota. He also holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from Washington University.
