ANNUAL REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN 2016 marks the sixth consecutive year of record growth, income and service for Marine. The dedicated staff and Board of Directors helped us realize these achievements through their consistent commitment and dedication to our members and the communities we serve. Highlights of our accomplishments include: We granted more loans than any other year in our history, increasing our loan portfolio to over $500 million. We granted over $120 million in non-conforming real estate loans to borrowers who don t qualify for conventional financing a 44% increase over 2015 and nearly four times the number of such loans we granted just three years ago. We welcomed the members of Bent River Community of Muscatine, Iowa, following a merger with that branch. Our charitable foundation raised over $350,000 and distributed over $150,000 to worthy causes; its endowment funds now measure over $400,000. Your Board of Directors is proud of these results and recognizes this business is really about people. We are creating jobs, advancing careers and providing needed credit to members left underserved by traditional financial institutions. Our business model is not like most financial institutions; that s how we make a difference in the world. We remain mission-focused and intent on producing consistent financial results. Thanks to all of you for your patronage and support. You are part of something very special. Tom Knothe Chairman of the Board

GROWTH THROUGH MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS l MUSCATINE, IOWA Reduced hours, limited services, and the looming possibility of a closure that s what members at the Muscatine, Iowa, branch of Bent River Community were facing. As the branch struggled to stay viable, Bent River leaders sought a way to keep the overall credit union strong, but not at the expense of Muscatine members. The solution turned out to be a transaction known as a spin-off, and the partner to help make that happen was Marine. Unlike a merger, the spin-off of the Muscatine branch involved its complete transfer to Marine via a sales process. Meanwhile, Bent River remains in existence at its primary location in Davenport, Iowa. Randy Hass, Bent River CEO/President, says Marine s commitment to lending to all credit tiers made it an ideal choice. He calls the spin-off truly a win-win for both credit unions and their members. The spin-off was the first transaction of its kind in Iowa and required a collaborative effort between Marine, Bent River and regulators to ensure an easy transition. Marine s Katie Tolokken, Senior Vice President, assisted Bent River through the process and led Marine s integration of the Muscatine branch. A merger or spin-off can be intimidating, especially to smaller credit unions. But Marine has the expertise to do the heavy lifting. The spin-off brought with it two employees from Bent River. They re now part of a staff of five. We make sure employees secure positions. It's not even a question; it s our expectation, says Katie. More than that, those employees now have training opportunities for career growth, she adds. The new Marine location has also created a leadership opportunity. 9 Randy Hass, Bent River CEO/President Today, with a new branch in Muscatine, Marine is establishing a positive presence in the community, and there s great potential for membership expansion not only in Iowa but across the river in Illinois as well. As for current branch members, they can now enjoy the benefits of a full service credit union, plus a more extensive line of products and services from Marine. 10 GROWTH THROUGH LENDING l TIM CRUCIANI In 2016, Marine granted $357.3 million in loans. We are proud to make loans to borrowers who may be turned away by other lenders. Our goal is to engage people, giving them hope that there is a financial institution where they are more than a credit score. We want to help them succeed. We want to understand who they are and what challenges they face, rather than basing our relationship on a number. The stories on these pages are examples of what we do every single day. Tim Cruciani Executive Vice President Ellen Vanden Avond & Dave Osborn NEENAH, WISCONSIN Sometimes bad things happen to good people. When a tornado struck Ellen Vanden Avond and Dave Osborn s home in Neenah, Wisconsin, it left behind extensive damage. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but that was about the only bright spot in a series of subsequent letdowns. As the couple confronted the sad reality of their much-loved home being essentially destroyed, they were hit with unexpected news from their insurance company. Long story short: they left us high and dry, says Dave. Although Ellen and Dave managed to rebuild their home exactly as it was, the effort left them with multiple high-interest debts. They turned to their long-time bank only to be disappointed yet again. They didn t want to help us out, Dave says. Despite these challenges, the couple stayed level-headed, kept a positive outlook and proactively sought a solution. They found Marine. When you go to a bank, says Dave, they have you fill out a bunch of forms and then they say, We ll get back to you, and you re thinking, Ah, wait a minute. Do you care about me? Or am I just a number? But at Marine, the couple noticed a difference right away. What was great about Marine was that they listened first, Ellen says. They wanted to understand your Ellen and Dave pictured with their Consumer Loan Officer, Jacob Phillips (far right) story and what your needs really are. Ultimately, Marine was able to help the couple with a debt consolidation loan. It s a great relief, says Ellen, to know exactly how soon we re going to be able to pay off the loan. And it really helps your attitude when you can see the end of your debt within sight. 10 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 l MEMBER STORIES

Judy and Robert pictured with their Senior Mortgage Loan Representative, Robertta Masoud (far left) Judy & Robert Breutzmann MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN When Judy Breutzmann s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease, she and her husband, Robert, stepped up to help. The couple decided to move in and take care of Judy s mother, staying with her for eight years before she passed away. Judy, her brother and her sister then inherited their mother s house equally. But Judy and Robert wanted to remain. So that meant they needed to buy the house and pay Judy s siblings their share of its value. But doing that proved to be challenging. Because of the couple s fixed income and some outstanding medical bills, they had a difficult time finding a lender. After being denied at one credit union, and then yet another, the couple finally found relief with Marine and Senior Mortgage Loan Representative Robertta Masoud. Robertta was able to pull a rabbit out of a hat, says Judy. That rabbit came first in the form of a home loan approval. We were elated. We waited for the other shoe to drop, but it never did, says Judy, who was able to pay her siblings and also cover the down payment and closing costs to buy the house. After a year of successful mortgage payments, Judy and Robert were then able to refinance their loan with Marine, which also allowed them to pay off those medical bills and even address some home repair issues. Today, Judy says the stress and uncertainty she and Robert had is gone thanks to Marine. Robertta worked miracles. She was always available if I had a question. She understood what we were going through. We felt like we had someone fighting for us. 11 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 l MEMBER STORIES

GROWTH THROUGH CAREERS Jorge Cubas SENIOR CONSUMER LOAN OFFICER When people establish good credit, their lives can change profoundly. No one understands this better than Jorge Cubas. Formerly a branch manager for a large, well-known bank, Jorge came to Marine in 2014 as a Consumer Loan Officer (CLO). Marine is one of the only financial companies I know of that s reaching out to the Hispanic community. And that s why I m here, says Jorge. Jorge was hired as a CLO in Eau Claire. Since then he was promoted to Senior CLO and recently transferred to Marine s new location in Menomonie, Wis. Bilingual and a member of the Hispanic community himself, Jorge understands the unique financial challenges and complicating attitudes that many within this population have. For example, a pervasive lack of trust in financial institutions explains why many rely heavily on cash transactions. Unfortunately, that mindset can make it incredibly difficult to establish a credit history and function effectively in an economic system that essentially runs on credit. On the other hand, Jorge says helping those from the Hispanic community become Marine members can initiate a turning point in their financial thinking. That s especially true with the purchase of a car or a home. According to Jorge, in the past year alone, Marine has made significant inroads throughout its branch network with the Hispanic community, due in large part to an increase in bilingual employees, along with the Marine emphasis on helping people. We don t say, Here s your checking account. See ya, says Jorge. We start building a relationship with the members. We help them understand the importance of opening an account, saving for the future and doing the things needed for a good credit score. And when they do get a loan through Marine, they re going to start building credit and start making their dreams become real. EMPLOYEE STORIES l ANNUAL REPORT

Joe Ware ASSOCIATE BRANCH MANAGER When Joe Ware walks through his front door after work, he s got a fan club waiting. His wife and 1-yearold daughter are there for hugs and kisses. So are his 5-year-old son and his 12-, 4-, and 2-year-old daughters. The nightly ritual melts my heart, says Joe. When I m not at Marine, my priority is family time all the way. Joe began at Marine in September of 2013 as a Consumer Loan Officer. He was promoted to a Mortgage Loan Representative in October of 2014, before becoming an Associate Branch Manager in April of Joe has achieved a monthly top performer status four times during his three-plus years at Marine and was nominated by his peers as a Special Contributor in Joe appreciates the schedule he s been able to create at Marine, one where he can leave by 5:30 and have weekends off. But the healthy balance between work and family that Joe now has wasn t always possible. Prior to coming to Marine in 2013, he regularly put in more than 60 hours a week at the credit union where he used to work, including going in on Saturdays. I was there way more than I should have been. At Marine, we re encouraged to work hard, of course but also work smart, says Joe. Along with that smarter schedule, Joe has embraced Marine s opportunities for career growth. After thirteen years in the financial industry, Joe can t imagine doing anything else. But he adds that Marine has given him a new level of job satisfaction. My biggest reward here is helping people in a way that other institutions can t. He says he even gets hugs of joy from members when they learn Marine can help them. And speaking of hugs, when Joe s work day is done and he s back at home, it s time for wrestling, building blocks, train sets and watching Wheel of Fortune. Joe has the time and energy to be there for his family and for him that s the biggest reward of all. 13 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 l EMPLOYEE STORIES

Erin Wencl BRANCH MANAGER When asked what roles she s held at Marine Credit Union, Erin Wencl smiles. Are you ready? she says. Since starting at Marine in 2009, Erin has been a Member Service Representative (MSR), a receptionist, an MSR supervisor, a Consumer Loan Officer, an interim Branch Manager and a Branch Manager at several locations. Erin has been a bi-annual President s Circle award winner twice and nominated by her peers as a Special Contributor three times. Recently, she and her husband, along with their two-year-old son, moved from Fond du Lac to La Crosse, where Erin is now Branch Manager at the West Avenue location. My husband and I both went to college at Winona State just across the river. We love this area, Erin says. the work was exhausting, the commute was long and the career prospects were few. It s pretty extraordinary how Marine gave me the opportunities to work toward leading a large branch, which I was doing within a few years, says Erin. She points to her competitive spirit, interest in learning new skills and willingness to ask questions as big factors in her career progression. But Erin also emphasizes that Marine has empowered her to flourish. What I love about Marine is that the opportunities are endless. The company invests in its people and gives you the chance to develop your strengths. It s just a matter of wanting to do it. But I also think Marine helps bring that out of you the desire to keep bettering yourself. The various positions Erin has taken on at Marine have helped her stay, as she puts it, driven, engaged and successful. Not the words she would apply to her former job as a book store café manager, where EMPLOYEE STORIES l ANNUAL REPORT

GROWTH THROUGH EDUCATION You are more than a credit score. But that doesn t mean you shouldn t understand what makes up your credit score. Marine bases its lending decisions on members individual circumstances. However, we are so much more to our members than just a bank or just a lender. We help members reach the goals they have when they walk into our branches, as well as goals they never dreamed of reaching before coming to Marine. As we sit down and get to know the person in front of our loan desk or learn more about the person in front of our teller line, it s a purposefully interactive process. We want our members to overcome the challenges that brought them to us and give them the tools to prevent future challenges. With our learning system modules, members can learn about budgeting, home ownership, identity theft protection and more for free independently or with a Marine staff member. With products like Credit Builder Checking, members who have previously been turned down for a checking account can begin to establish finances. Marine takes accountability for the financial education of our members, because we believe each person has the right to an opportunity for a brighter future. We want our members to CONQUER THE CHALLENGES that brought them to us and GIVE THEM THE TOOLS to prevent future challenges. 15 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 l GROWTH THROUGH EDUCATION

GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITIES Marine believes a community thrives when all members experience opportunities for growth and stability. The Marine Foundation follows these same principles. This non-profit entity is dedicated to making charitable contributions and increasing financial literacy in the communities we call home. The following stories are just two of the many organizations supported by the Marine Foundation in Our employees are proud to be able to support causes like these in their local communities every year! Milwaukee Public Schools TEAM UP Senior Send Of f When Member Service Representative Jasmine Vernon thought about what organization her branch could donate to through the Marine Foundation, she immediately thought of TEAM UP. TEAM UP is a college access center that assists students applying to college, signing up for financial aid and seeking scholarship opportunities. Each year TEAM UP also raises money to help send students off to their college campus dorms with the supplies they need. When Jasmine was a senior in high school, she was a recipient of the TEAM UP Senior Send Off. The Wauwatosa branch, where Jasmine works, made a large donation to the TEAM UP Senior Send Off in The students were very excited about their future college experiences. Jasmine said, I am really happy to be a part of this growing company to see how many smiles we put on students and parents faces. FOUND ATION 17 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 l MCU FOUNDATION

STOP Team Jadon Many employees in the Fox Valley and Fond du Lac districts began visiting J s BBQ, a local restaurant, on a regular basis. The employees gradually got to know the restaurant owners and their son Jadon. Jadon was born with cerebral palsy and has developed a progressive condition, making coordination and balance of all muscle groups and bodily functions a challenge. The family needed to raise funds for Jadon to attend a specialized school called the Conductive Learning Center to help with his academic studies in a setting more at his pace. They held a fundraiser that included a silent auction, raffle, a 5K run/walk and other sports and recreation activities. Marine s employees, of course, jumped at the chance to help support this family in their local community. In fact, six branches in the two districts chose to support Team Jadon through the Marine Foundation. Employees from the Ripon and Neenah branches participated in the 5K that helped pay for Jadon s school.
