1 Ideas Economy: Innovation Forum 2013 Redefining the speed of business March 28th Berkeley, Calif. The fourth annual Economist s Ideas Economy: Innovation Forum 2013 will explore the fundamental technological shifts redefining business in the twenty-first century. As the digitisation of manufacturing is launching the world into a third industrial revolution, twenty-four/seven connectivity and social networking is facilitating a global innovation revolution arguably more profound than any in the last two centuries. The spread of frugal innovation practices offers new opportunities for the rich world to learn from the developing world. This year, The Economist s sharp thinking and distinct perspective will draw upon today s leading practioners and business minds to examine the ways large-scale technological change will reinvent business for the next 100 years. How will the confluence of multiple technologies advancing at an exponential pace speed the global economy toward a postindustrial world? What will be the impact of this on businesses of all kinds? How can companies successfully react to the enormous pressure to move fast, fail fast, pivot fast, and innovate even faster and what organizational structures will need to be fostered to make this a reality? What are the most effective financial models for both start-ups and new projects within established companies? What are the key trends and technologies that, if leveraged quickly and intelligently, will enable companies to be more productive and more nimble and therefore more competitive? What are the experiences and recommendations in using these across a range of industry sectors? Chaired by The Economist's China business and finance editor, Vijay Vaitheeswaran, the Ideas Economy: Innovation Forum 2013 is designed for senior-level decision makers and innovation practitioners. Specifically C-level executives and their direct reports, who are responsible for driving innovation and new product development, including: chief innovation officers, chief information officers, chief technology officers, chief strategy officers, chief marketing officers, and chief executives. In a fast-moving world, disruptive technological change is a constant and for most companies one of the central problems of the coming decades will be how to innovate quickly enough. The Ideas Economy: Innovation Forum Redefining the speed of business - will explore these trends and provide a roadmap for rewriting the rules of global business. 5 1.00 pm Lunch 2.00 pm Ideas Economy working groups Group A Intelligent infrastructure With the global population exploding to 9 billion by 2050, building the next generation of intelligent infrastructure is one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century. Increased demands for energy, water, transportation, and broadband access require the immediate attention of businesses and governments--to design and implement the smart systems that will allow cities to accommodate staggering growth, promote innovation, and benefit from sensors, data, and networks. What technologies are driving the growth of smart cities? What new energy systems will enable sustainable growth? How does intelligent infrastructure promote innovation and economic growth? And what are the greatest challenges? This working group, sponsored by Itron, will explore the questions senior business leaders need to answer so that they may take advantage of the movement towards intelligent infrastructure. Timothy N. Papandreou, Deputy Director, Sustainable Streets, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Lyndon Rive, Chief executive, SolarCity Russ Vanos, Senior vice-president, Strategy and Business Development, Itron Group B Intelligent computing Advancements in technologies such as data analytics, cloud service models, and new age applications have made companies more intelligent and more agile. But difficult questions such as how to exploit opportunities at the speed of technological change still persist. How do companies marshal the latest trends in information technology to enable faster speeds, higher revenues, and competitive advantage? This session, sponsored by NetApp, will focus on the strategic opportunities behind intelligent computing and how companies can learn to use IT to promote flexibility, simplify business, garner new insights, and master the art of innovation. Simon Aspinall, Chief of vertical markets, strategy and marketing, Virtustream Om Nalamasu, Chief technology officer, Applied Materials Ed Park, Executive vice president and chief operating officer, Athena Health Tom Standage, Digital editor, The Economist Moderator: Jay Kidd, chief technology officer, NetApp Group C Enterprise innovation We are entering a new era of innovation, where the scale of a big company can unleash
6 innovation rather than shackle it. Driving change inside these companies are catalysts entrepreneurial individuals who use company resources, scale, and agility to develop solutions to global challenges in ways few others can. These companies and these individuals have pushed into territory that was once the province of entrepreneurs, NGOs, and governments from delivering health care technology, clean water, and new agricultural capabilities in developing countries to managing energy, traffic, public transit, and crime in the world s major cities. This panel, sponsored by Innosight, explores how large companies are poised to out-innovate startups and the role of catalysts in driving growth and agility across the enterprise. Robyn Bolton, Partner, Innosight George Halvorson, Chief executive, Kaiser Permanente Peter Sims, Author, Little Bets Moderator: Hilary Ewing, Senior analyst, The Economist Intelligence Unit Group D - The internet of everything Today, more than 99% of things in the physical world are unconnected. What will happen when more people, processes, data, and things start to connect? Known as the internet of everything, these emerging technologies that enable new capabilities, experiences and social and economic opportunities through digital connectivity, are flourishing there may be upwards of 100 billion internet connected objects by What are the opportunities and challenges around the internet of everything? What can businesses do to leverage this phenomenon to improve user experiences and drive growth? What are the consequences of an unprecedented number of connections all coming online for the first time? And what is required from business and society to successfully manage the transition to these new technologies? This session, sponsored by Cisco, will explore the internet of everything--and seek to find answers to these questions and more. Dave Evans, Chief futurist, Cisco Paul Saffo, Managing director, Foresight, Discern Jim Wales, Executive director, Innovation Program, Verizon Wireless Moderator: Martin Giles, US technology correspondent, The Economist 3.30 pm Has the ideas machine broken down? The idea that innovation and new technology have stopped driving growth is getting increasing attention. Two leading thinkers discuss and debate whether the world is on a technological plateau.
