6 How Does an NFC Mobile Device Work? Connecting apps with the physical world: Apps jump into the world and touch people, objects and other apps. NFC reader/writer Connect devices through physical proximity: Easily connect devices simply by touching them. A true device hand shake Interactive wallet: Incorporates the use of a secure element to allow your phone to act like a card for payment, Transportation and physical access NFC peer-to-peer NFC tag emulator

7 How Does an NFC Tag Work? Same fundamental principle as RFID, contactless smart cards or access control badges Reader (e.g. mobile device) provides power, initiates RF communications & captures data from the tag (or programs data into the tag) 13.56MHz

8 What Is an NFC Tag? An NFC tag is a contactless tag capable of storing NDEF formatted data, which interoperates with ISO14443 infrastructure and NFC devices as defined by the NFC Forum An NFC Forum tag is compatible to one of four NFC Forum Tag platforms capable of storing NDEF formatted data ICODE, MIFARE Classic can be NFC tags, but NOT NFC Forum tags MIFARE Ultralight, UltralightC, MIFARE DESFire and SmartMX can be NFC Forum tags

9 NFC Forum Type Tags NFC Forum Tag is a contactless tag compatible to one of four NFC Forum Tag platforms capable to store NDEF formatted data NFC Forum introduced standardized technology architecture, initial specifications and tag formats for NFC compliant devices in June 2006 These specifications include: NFC Forum Data Exchange Format (NDEF), defines a message encapsulation format to exchange information Record Type Definition (RTDs) The RTD specification provides a way to efficiently define record formats for new applications and gives users the opportunity to create their own applications based on NFC Forum specifications of TEXT, URI, Smart Poster, and Generic Control.
