2 2010 ACCOMPLISHMENTS MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT The common theme of United Way during 2010 was one of optimism based on a belief in the caring and generosity of the people of the greater St. Louis region. The outcomes achieved during the year confirmed the reasons for our optimism and the community s care for each other. Under the leadership of Jim Weddle, we surpassed our $68 million goal placing us among the top five most generous community s in the nation. Our African American Leadership Society continued to be number one in giving among all United Ways and the Women s Leadership Society remains among the largest and strongest. The de Tocqueville Society reached a recordbreaking $11 million. Most importantly, people who were in need found help. In fact, one in every three people in our community used a United Way supported agency or service during The campaign s success allows us to continue to work and collaborate with organizations throughout the 16-county region in Missouri and Illinois. Because of the community s caring nature and generosity, children will be better prepared for school, families will have food for their tables and individuals will learn the skills and receive the support needed to find and hold a job. People in need will find these and many other life-changing and lifesaving services due to the compassion of the St. Louis region. Your contribution to United Way is a vote of trust we do not take lightly. We work with hundreds of trained volunteers making sure your donations are invested wisely and costeffectively. Thanks to their efforts, and those of thousands of other volunteers working across the organization, more than 90 cents of every dollar supports agencies and programs that provide needed services in this community. Together, every day we are helping people in our region through United Way. Some of the highlights of 2010 include: More than a million individuals and families received help from one of our partner agencies $50.7 million in allocations went to member agencies $2 million in one-time grants went to both member and non-member agencies $4 million in direct services was provided by United Way, such as and the Volunteer Center We value our affiliation with partner agencies and their commitment to joining with us to help people. To strengthen agency capacity to deliver quality programs and services, United Way: Led days of service throughout 2010: On January 18, nearly 1,200 people volunteered at 13 schools, churches and nonprofits in St. Louis City through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Professionals also conducted workshops on financial stability. Partners included: AmeriCorps St. Louis, the St. Louis Chapter of AmeriCorps Alumni, HandsOn Network, Bank of America, Wells Fargo Advisors, and QC Holdings. On April 24, St. Louis Serves Day, more than 800 people volunteered in 20 locations, such as parks and neighborhoods in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. Partners included: AmeriCorps St. Louis and St. Louis City. More than 1,700 volunteered during the week-long 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance throughout United Way s service region. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department held a candlelight vigil and musical tribute. Partners included: AmeriCorps St. Louis and Mission Continues. Participated in the Red Cross Ready Rating program to strengthen organization readiness in case of disaster. Handled more than 100,000 calls to our hotline from people seeking help. Used to implement with Washington University s Brown School of Social Work a full study titled Integrating cancer control referrals and navigations into United Way also supported the 2010 Census and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) efforts received the Outstanding Service to Community Action Award by the Missouri Association for Community Action. Enrolled the 1,000th child in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Lincoln County, Missouri. With the leadership and sponsorship of Monsanto and the Multicultural Society, the First Annual United Way Fashion Show: Celebrating Diversity was held. Partnered with Ameren and Laclede Gas on Dollar More and Dollar Help, respectively, to provide basic needs support to low-income people at risk of losing their utilities. Partnered with the Blues, the Rams, the Cardinals and the Gateway Grizzlies to help support the community through player involvement and special game day activities and ticket incentives. Your caring and generosity enables United Way of Greater St. Louis to bring the community together to do what we do best: help people. Our continued optimism in the people of the greater St. Louis region proved once again to be well founded. Our community s generosity, caring and compassion is something that we should recognize and celebrate as it is these qualities that make this such a great place to live, work and raise a family. Thank you for your support in Douglas H. Yaeger Chairman, and C.E.O. The Laclede Group, Inc. United Way Board Chair Gary C. Dollar 2 HelpingPeople.org
