3 Vladimír Šucha Director-General, Directorate-General Joint Research Centre, European Commission Vladimír Šucha is the Director-General of the Joint Research Centre, the European Commission's science and knowledge service, since 1 January Previously, he was the JRC Deputy Director-General and before that he spent six years as Director for Culture and Media in the Directorate- General for Education and Culture. Before joining the European Commission, he was Director of the Slovak Research and Development Agency, the national body responsible for funding research. From he was principal advisor for European affairs to the Slovak Minister of Education. He worked at the Permanent Representation of Slovakia to the EU as research, education and culture counsellor, from In parallel, Mr Šucha has followed a long-term academic and research career, as a full professor in Slovakia and visiting professor/scientist at a variety of academic institutions in other countries and has published about 100 scientific publications. Ann Mettler Head of European Political Strategy Centre, European Commission Ann Mettler is the Head of the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC), the in-house think tank of the European Commission, which reports directly to President Juncker. In this capacity, she also serves as Chair of the European Strategy and Policy Analysis System (ESPAS), an inter-institutional project aimed at strengthening the EU's foresight capacity and anticipatory governance. Prior to assuming this position in December 2014, she was for eleven years Executive Director of the Lisbon Council, a Brussels-based think tank she co-founded in From , she worked at the World Economic Forum, where she last served as Director for Europe. Ann Mettler holds Masters Degrees in political science and European law and economics, and graduated with distinction from the University of New Mexico, USA, and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn, Germany. Jean-Eric Paquet Deputy Secretary-General, Secretariat General, European Commission Jean-Eric Paquet began his career in the European Commission in 1993 in the Directorate-General for Transport, in the International Relations area, and later as assistant to the Transport Director General, Robert Coleman. In 1999 he joined the office of Mr Verheugen (Member of the European Commission in charge of enlargement). In 2002 he became the deputy head of office of M. Busquin, member of the European Commission in charge of Research policy. Mr Paquet was EU Ambassador in the Islamic republic of Mauritania between 2004 and He returned to transport in 2007 where he led the development of the Trans-European Transport Network policy. As Director for the "European Mobility Network" he was responsible for Europe's transport infrastructure policy and investment strategies, the single European rail area, inland waterways and port policy. He joined DG Enlargement in November 2013 where he took over the Directorate in charge of relations with Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina,
4 Serbia, Kosovo. In January 2015 he became Director for Western Balkans, adding Montenegro and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to his portfolio. In November 2015 he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission responsible for Better Regulation and Policy Coordination (economic governance, internal market and competitiveness, resource efficiency and employment, education and social policies). Sven Langedijk Head of Unit, Directorate-General Joint Research Centre, European Commission Sven Langedijk is Head of the Econometrics and Applied Statistics Unit of the European Commission at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Italy). The Unit develops econometric and statistical applications to provide evidence for policy across the policy cycle in fields such as education, lifelong learning, inequality, employment, environment, competitiveness and innovation. The unit includes the Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards and the Competence Centre on Microeconomic Evaluation. Previously, he headed the European Commission team responsible for developing, negotiating and monitoring the EU-IMF financial support and economic adjustment programme for Ireland. Until 2010, he contributed to the development of the EU fiscal governance framework and the Stability and Growth Pact and was editor of the Commission's annual flagship report on Public Finances in EMU. Paolo Paruolo Project Manager, Competence Centre on Microeconomic Evaluation, Directorate-General Joint Research Centre, European Commission Paolo Paruolo is project manager of the Competence Centre on Microeconomic Evaluation (CC-ME) within the Directorate-General Joint Research Centre (Ispra, Italy). He joined the European Commission in 2013 as Scientific Officer in the Centre for Research on Impact Evaluation (CRIE) of the Econometrics and Applied Statistics Unit. He is an econometrician with interest in theoretical and applied econometrics and in counterfactual methods. He holds a master in Economics and Statistics (University of Bologna, 1987) and a PhD in Theoretical Econometrics - Mathematical Statistics (University of Copenhagen, 1995). He has served as Professor of Econometrics at the University of Bologna and the University of Insubria.
5 Maive Rute Deputy Director-General, Directorate-General Joint Research Centre, European Commission Maive Rute is Deputy Director-General, Joint Research Centre, European Commission. She joined the European Commission in 2005 to become Director for the Promotion of SMEs, Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship in DG Enterprise and Industry. She brought in her extensive management experience in the Estonian private and semi-public sector, notably as the founder and first CEO of the Estonian Credit and Export Guarantee Fund KredEx which supports business creation, exports and sustainable housing sector. In the Commission, Ms Rute also worked as Director for Biotechnologies, Food and Agriculture Research and as Resource Director in DG Research and Innovation. Laura van Geest Director, CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis Laura van Geest is Director of CPB, Netherlands Bureau voor Economic Policy Analysis. CPB is an independent Institute that provides the macroeconomic forecasts on which the Dutch annual budget is based and produces the internationally renowned monthly World Trade Monitor. It also undertakes research over a broad range of topics, varying from labour and financial markets to public investment, health care, innovation and education policy. Until 2013, she worked at the Dutch Ministry of Finance as Director General for the Budget ( ), Treasurer General ( ) and Director for General Financial Economic Policy. From , she served as an advisor to the Dutch Executive Director at the IMF. Klaus F. Zimmermann Bonn Graduate School of Economics, Harvard University and UNU-MERIT Klaus F. Zimmermann is John F. Kennedy Memorial Policy Fellow at the Center for European Studies, Harvard University; Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT; Full Professor of Economics at Bonn University (on leave); Honorary Professor, Free University of Berlin and Renmin University of China, Beijing. He has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Distinguished John G. Diefenbaker Award of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Harris German-Dartmouth Distinguished Visiting Professorship, and the Outstanding Contribution Award 2013 of the European Investment Bank (EIB). The prestigious EIB Prize is awarded for excellence in social and economic research and its implementation and diffusion. Zimmermann s work connects research to policy and society and he writes regularly in leading international media and advises governments, the European Commission and the World Bank on labor market and migration issues.
6 Jonathon Stoodley Head of Unit, Secretariat General, European Commission Jonathon Stoodley has been trained as a lawyer. He then worked in the UK Parliament for one of the committees reviewing EU initiatives. He later moved to the Department of Trade and Industry (now the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) in the UK Government before moving to Brussels to work for the European Commission. During his time in the Commission he has worked for the Directorate- General for the Internal Market and Services, the Delegation of the Commission to the international organisations in Geneva and the Secretariat-General. In the Secretariat-General he has been Head of the Unit responsible for the application of EU law and now for the evaluation and simplification of EU regulation, financial programmes and policy. Santiago Loranca Garcia Head of Unit, Directorate-General Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, European Commission Head of Unit for Impact Assessment and Evaluation in the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion in European Commission. Previously, he was responsible for the European Employment Strategy and Governance unit in charge of policy coordination for the employment and social dimension of the European Semester ( ), the monitoring of ESF and employment and social inclusion policies in a number of Member States such as Belgium, France, Slovak Republic ( ), Ireland, Latvia, United Kingdom ( ), Hungary and Bulgaria (2004) and the Evaluation Unit ( ). Previously he worked in DG Employment as policy officer in fields such as adaptation to industrial change, the social dimension of the Information Society, local development initiatives, third sector and ESF innovative actions ( ). His first assignments in the Commission were in EUROSTAT, where he contributed to the development of the system of wages and labour costs statistics ( ), and assessment of GNP estimates and methods ( ). Wolf-Dietrich Grussmann Head of Unit, Directorate-General Communications Networks, Content and Technology, European Commission Mr Grussmann is Head of Unit Regulatory Coordination and Business within the European Commission's Communications Networks, Content and Technology Directorate-General. Previously, Mr Grussmann was Head of Unit Implementation of Regulatory Framework (II) within the European Commission's Information Society and Media Directorate-General. From 1992 to 1993 Mr Grussmann worked in the Legal Service of the Austrian Federal Chancellery, and dealt with the implementation of the Agreement on the European Economic Area and the preparation of the EU accession. He was Vice-president of the Federal Procurement Control Commission in Vienna from 1994 to Wolf-Dietrich Grussmann is graduated in law and was assistant professor at the University of Salzburg from 1992 to 2000.
7 Mariana Hristcheva Head of Unit, Directorate-General Regional and Urban Policy, European Commission Joined the Commission in February 2010 as a Member/Senior Adviser and subsequently Deputy Head and Head of Cabinet of Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response in Barroso II and Vice-President for Budget and Human Resources in the Juncker Commission. As of 1 September 2015 Head of Unit Evaluation and European Semester in DG REGIO. Before joining the Commission she worked in the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria to the EU (Minister Plenipotentiary, Head of ECOFIN Unit) and the Bulgarian Ministry of Finance (expert, adviser to the Minister, Head of the European Integration Department), in both positions participating actively in the negotiations of Bulgaria for membership to the EU and subsequently in the Council preparatory bodies in the area and financial and monetary issues, MFF, climate change financing, structural funds. Previously worked in the private business in the area of sales and marketing as a manager and a trainer. She holds a master degree in Economics (1987), and in Law (2005) from the University for National and World Economy (Bulgaria). Frank Siebern-Thomas Directorate-General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission Frank Siebern-Thomas is Deputy Head of Unit European Semester and Member States Competitiveness within the Directorate-General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs of European Commission. Since 2000 he has worked at the European Commission s Directorate general for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. He studied mathematics and economics in Hamburg and Louvain-la-Neuve and holds a PhD in economics from the European University Institute in Florence (Italy). Sonia Pagliaro Directorate-General Migration and Home Affairs, European Commission Sonia Pagliaro coordinates the evaluation of the funds managed by the Directorate-General Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission. Her professional experience focuses on design, implementation and evaluation of donor-funded programmes (bilateral donors and international agencies) in Europe, Africa and Asia. Within the European Commission she worked previously at EuropeAid as quality support officer in business, trade and regional integration, and more recently at the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, as auditor of the European structural and investment funds.
