What Makes This Program Unique The General Hugh Shelton Leadership Forum is an annual seminar series that focuses attention on the importance of leadership development. The Forum is a program offered through the General Hugh Shelton Leadership Center administered by the NC State University Office of the Provost. As Executive Director, General Shelton is committed to developing values-based leadership skills to enhance corporate, education, and youth development organizations. The Forum strives to bring together an intergenerational audience from diverse professional backgrounds in order to create a more, dynamic dialogue about values-based leadership. 3 Biographies General Hugh Shelton General Henry Hugh Shelton, U.S. Army, Retired, served as the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 until his retirement in The NC State alumnus and Tarboro native is a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War and was the first member of the elite U.S. Army Special Forces the Green Berets to rise to the nation s top military post. Before serving as the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council, General Shelton was Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command, overseeing the Green Berets and the Navy Seals. General Shelton earned his commission through the Reserve Officers Training Corps at NC State, where he graduated in 1963 with a degree in textile engineering. He also earned a Master of Science degree from Auburn University before completing his training at the Air Command and Staff College and the National War College. The General now leads NC State s General Hugh Shelton Leadership Center and serves as a powerful example of leadership excellence. In September 2002, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress. Marshall Goldsmith Dr. Marshall Goldsmith has been recognized again as one of the top ten Most-Influential Business Thinkers in the World and the top-ranked executive coach at the 2013 biennial Thinkers50 ceremony in London. Dr. Goldsmith is the author or editor of 34 books, two New York Times bestsellers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won t Get You There a Wall Street Journal #1 business book and winner of the Harold Longman Award for Business Book of the Year. He teaches executive education at Dartmouth s Tuck School of Business. He is one of a select few executive advisors who have been asked to work with over 150 major CEOs and their management teams. He served on the Board of the Peter Drucker Foundation for ten years. He has been a volunteer teacher for U.S. Army Generals, Navy Admirals, Girl Scout executives, International and American Red Cross leaders where he was a National Volunteer of the Year. Nicholas LaRusso, M.D. Dr. Nicholas LaRusso is a Distinguished Investigator of the Mayo Foundation, the Charles H. Weinman Endowed Professor of Medicine, past Medical Director of both the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation (CFI) and the Center for Connected Care. Prior to becoming Center for Innovation Director in 2008, he held positions as Vice Chair for Research of the Department of Medicine (DOM), Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Chair of the DOM, all at Mayo Clinic. Dr. LaRusso received his undergraduate degree (magna cum laude) from Boston College, his M.D. degree from New York Medical College, and his training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Mayo, the latter as an NIH fellow in the laboratory of Alan Hofmann. is Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for Tryon International Equestrian Center. In this role, she is responsible for the development of the Tryon Resort as a premier lifestyle community. Previously, she was President of NURAY Media, a media preservation company whose mission is to protect and preserve vintage film and video content by providing preservation services to clients, restoring classic motion picture films and television collections for the public, and creating educational content to advance the knowledge of film history. Ms. Decker began her career with Duke Power Company, now Duke Energy, in consumer services and moved through the ranks to become the youngest and first female Vice President in the company s history. She left Duke Power when serving as their Chief Communications Officer, to become the founding President of The Lynnwood Foundation, which was created to restore the Duke Mansion in Charlotte as a conference center and to begin the William States Lee Leadership Institute. Appointed Secretary of Commerce by Governor Pat McCrory, she led the creation of The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, a public-private entity, charged with marketing North Carolina globally. Ms. Decker is a summa
4 cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and serves on numerous boards of public, private, and nonprofit organizations. serves as senior vice president of customer services for Duke Energy. She is responsible for customer contact operations, revenue billing and receivables, metering services, customer support operations and customer satisfaction. Previously, Ms. Lanier served as vice president of corporate services for Progress Energy. Prior to that, she held leadership roles at both Nortel and EMC (previously Data General Corp.). At Nortel, Ms. Lanier served as vice president and general manager of Nortel Knowledge Services. Actively involved in the community, Ms. Lanier currently serves on the boards of trustees for the United Way of the Greater Triangle and Discovery Place, a nonprofit education organization. She is a former member and secretary for the North Carolina State University board of trustees. She established the Dwain K. and Gayle S. Lanier North Carolina State University Scholarship Endowment in 2003 to help benefit engineering students. Ms. Lanier was also one of the 2009 The Network Journal s 25 Influential Black Women in Business Award recipients and the 2011 Business Leader Women Extraordinaire recipient. Andy Albright Andy Albright is a proud graduate of NC State University, and author of The 8 Steps to Success, and Millionaire Maker Manual. Mr. Albright is involved with numerous charities and organizations; he is a member of the advisory board for NC State s Entrepreneurship Initiative, a member of the advisory board for the NC State University Engagement, and a loyal supporter and major donor of Wolfpack athletics. Mr. Albright is a motivational speaker for various groups and organizations. He is passionate about helping mentor entrepreneurial-minded students and aspiring job creators. Mr. Albright s company, National Agents Alliance, is one of the country s largest and most successful insurance marketing organizations, specializing in life event marketing and sales. Mr. Albright has appeared in regional North Carolina magazines and newspapers, and his company was selected from a pool of 35,000 area businesses as the NC Triad s Fastest Growing Company by Greensboro s Triad Business Journal in Mr. Albright was named to the Triad s 2011 Movers & Shakers list by Business Leader magazine, and has appeared on several national radio shows. serves as a Sales Leader at State Farm Insurance Companies. He is responsible for recruiting and hiring new State Farm agents and for consulting with each agency to grow market share. Over his 20 years with State Farm he has worked with over 400 new agency startups. His mentoring and coaching approach has resulted in the most improved market area in State Farm, a company with over 18,000 agents. Mr. Odland has served on Governor McRory s committee to launch the Teachers@Work program through the North Carolina Business Committee on Education. In 2015 he coordinated a launch of the State Farm Sales Lab at NC State, providing technology and coaching to help NC State students become more effective in sales and other career skills. Mr. Odland is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and earned his MBA from Duke s Fuqua School of Business. He is a speaker at industry events including being featured at the annual GAMA LAMP meeting. He has also earned the following industry designations: Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Chartered Life Underwriter, and Chartered Financial Consultant.
