1 View this in your browser APRIL 2014 NFL Legends Successful On & Off Field NFL Legends in the News NFL Life Line ( ) Officiating Academy for NFL Legends Free Cardio/Prostate Screenings in 2014 Dear Retired Player: We just returned from the Annual League meetings in Orlando. (Yes, there are worse places to meet.) Two of the first three speakers to address the group of owners, coaches, and front office executives were former Pro Bowl players Patrick Kerney and Aeneas Williams. Patrick, who played for the Falcons and Seahawks from , now is in our office as Vice President of Player Engagement. Aeneas, the former Cardinals & Rams defensive back who was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame last February, is one of the 20 retired players who worked with our office last fall to organize the NFL Legends Community. More than 1,300 of your colleagues (aka Legends) have joined the Legends Community which primarily was formed to help you stay connected with the League, your teams and your former teammates. Kerney told the gathering that the Community offers a platform for our Legends to share their knowledge and experience to protect the NFL brand, preserve our great game, and develop the future. We engage and reengage those who played the game through events and programs that bring them together. Williams, the eight-time Pro Bowler who currently lives in St Louis, eloquently spoke about how NFL Legends are connected to every facet of our sport. We transfer our knowledge and passion to high school players, Williams said and set expectations at the universities for those hoping to one day enter into the NFL. We also mentor current NFL players and connect with the men of the past who made the game what it is today. If you are interested in staying connected with Patrick, Aeneas and your former NFL teammates through the Legends Community, them directly. Also, Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz wrapped up the opening session in Orlando by discussing the work that he and his son Michael are doing to bring our great sport to Hispanic families around the country. The elder Munoz, who is the only Hispanic in the Hall of Fame in Canton, challenged the owners to do more in the Hispanic community which is the fastest growing minority in the USA. You have the opportunity to play a unique and powerful role, Anthony told the group. You have the opportunity to be a bridge for Hispanics to connect through the NFL experience with friends, their local neighborhoods and with America. Please focus the time, energy and resources you and your staffs have to do so. The three great former players Legends just like you helped kicked off the 2014 Annual NFL meeting on an upbeat, professional and inspirational note. 2 NFL LINEMAN CRAWFORD KER ENDURED SOME POST-NFL BRUISES BUT NOW IS EATING PRETTY WELL It s been said for years that the fastest way to separate an athlete from his money is get him to open a restaurant. Crawford Ker doesn t necessarily disagree but, he has done a pretty good job of breaking that stereotype by operating a Florida-based chain of restaurants since his last NFL game. Ker, the former seven-year veteran of the Cowboys ( ) and Broncos (1991), now is in 24 (and growing) locations with his Ker s WingHouse Bar and Grill restaurants throughout the Sunshine State. Former G Crawford Ker, who played seven seasons with the Cowboys and Broncos ( ), is now the owner and operator of Kers WingHouse Bar and Grill, which has 24 locations throughout Florida. It hasn t always been easy for him but that s true of most entrepreneurs, especially professional athletes. We players often struggle with life after sports, Ker says. The reasons vary but when I retired in 1992 I knew I wanted to do something that I would enjoy, which would increase my chances of being successful. I finally found that when I decided to open the first WingHouse in Largo in I found there are similarities in both the football and restaurant business. The NFL taught me the importance of teamwork and having a structure where everyone has a role to play. The team is constantly evaluated on performance who is doing well, who needs to improve. It s much the same in restaurants. At the end of the day, a football team needs to win and a restaurant needs to be profitable to sustain in the marketplace. Both exist in a very competitive atmosphere. Ker, 51, has some words of advice for younger players who have recently made the transition from football to the real world. Believe in yourself at all costs, never quit and have perseverance, he says, sounding very much like his former Cowboys Coach Tom Landry. Troy will oversee all aspects of football operations in the league office with a focus on quality and innovation. He joined our office in 2010 to lead our Player Engagement Department. Former Seahawks Pro Bowl DE Jacob Green ( ) and Bengals 1992 No. 1 draft choice QB David Klingler are included in the 2014 class of inductees to the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is April 7 in Houston. Green now is the Associate Vice-President of Major Gifts for his alma mater Texas A&M s 12th Man Foundation. Dr. Klingler, who threw 11 TD passes in

4 Former Seahawks DE Jacob Green, who now works as the Associate Vice-President of Major Gifts for his alma mater Texas A&Ms 12th Man Foundation,will be inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame this month. a 1990 game for the University of Houston, entered graduate school at the Dallas Theological Seminary and earned both a Master s degree in Theology and a PhD in Old Testament Studies. He now is Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. G Edwin Bailey (Seahawks ) and S Brian Dawkins (Eagles, Broncos ) have been selected for the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. Bailey played his college ball at South Carolina State while Dawkins attended Clemson. Hall of Fame ceremonies are May in Columbia. The late RB Kenny Washington, who along with teammate Woody Strode helped integrate the post World War II NFL when they signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 1946, recently was honored in that city. Kenny Washington Square was dedicated in the same Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles where the former UCLA star grew up and is still remembered and revered. Washington played collegiate football alongside Jackie Robinson, who integrated Major League Baseball in 1947 a year after Washington s rookie season with the Rams. Manu Tuiasosopo will be inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame next month along with former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and Commerce Norman Mineta. The former defensive lineman was drafted by the Seahawks out of UCLA in 1979 and finished his career with the 49ers in The Asian Hall of Fame is located in Seattle and was founded in 2004 to honor achievement, inspire the next generation, and build the national community of Asian Pacific Americans. Finally, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame recently announced its football honoree this year will be Ronde Barber who will be inducted during ceremonies in Portsmouth on April 26. Ronde and his twin brother Tiki was born in Blacksburg and played high school ball in Roanoke. He was drafted by the Bucs out of the University of Virginia in 1997 and played his entire 16 year career in Tampa before retiring after the 2012 season. FREE CARDIO & PROSTATE SCREENINGS SET FOR LAS VEGAS, PITTSBURGH, DALLAS, CHICAGO & CANTON The NFL Player Care Foundation (PCF) is sponsoring free cardiovascular and prostate screenings for you and other alumni in several cities during the coming months. Free screenings are planned for Las Vegas (April 24-26), Pittsburgh (May 2), Dallas (May 31-June 1), Chicago (July 12) and Canton (Pro Football Hall of Fame Weekend, July 31-August 2). The PCF is an independent organization dedicated to assisting retired players in improving their quality of life. Its membership includes the

League, NFL Alumni Association, Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Since 2008, more than 3,000 retired players have been screened for prostate cancer and cardiovascular health through these programs. All calls are strictly confidential and not shared with the league office, teams, or any related entity. 14 FORMER NFL PLAYERS PARTICIPATE IN OFFICIATING ACADEMY IN BALTIMORE, MD Fourteen retired NFL players took part in the Tom Beard Football Officials Clinic at Maritime Institute and Morgan State University in Baltimore last month. NFL Player Engagement and the NFL Football Officiating Academy partnered to select the players for the three-day program, including several former players who contacted our office directly this past fall and expressed an interest in pursuing an officiating career. Lance Schulters, who played safety for the 49ers, Titans, Dolphins and Falcons during his 10-year NFL career, participated in last months NFL Officiating Academy in Baltimore. Former Bills and Vikings safety Steve Freeman ( ) became involved in officiating after his NFL playing days were over as a way to stay in the sport. Last February, he worked Super Bowl XLVIII as a back judge in the Seahawks 43-8 win over the Broncos. After completing an Officiating 101 orientation, the players participated in a program featuring classroom and on-field instruction including breakouts by position group, on-field scrimmage work, and discussions with Super Bowl XLVIII

6 referee Terry McAulay and Dean Blandino, the NFL s vice president of officiating. As a recently retired player, it is important for me to stay involved in the game, said Nate Jones, who played eight NFL seasons ( ) as a defensive back for Dallas, Denver, Miami and New England. Becoming an official is the perfect way to achieve this goal.
