AusIMM Awards 2014 The Institute Medal - Andrew Forrest FAusIMM(CP) This award recognises Andrew Twiggy Forrest s outstanding leadership and support of the Australian minerals industry. He is a passionate advocate for the industry and is at the forefront in addressing the challenges it faces. His personal contribution is recognised and in particular his philanthropy and endeavours to eliminate indigenous disadvantage and global slavery. Andrew s early years were spent as a jackaroo at Minderoo Station in the Pilbara. Minderoo was owned by the Forrest family until it was sold in 1998 due to relentless drought and debt but was bought back by Andrew in After graduating, Andrew worked as a stockbroker at the brokerage houses Kirke Securities and Jacksons. In his early 30s, Andrew became the founding CEO of Anaconda Nickel (now Minara Resources) which has since grown to become one of Australia s largest mineral exporters with its Murrin Murrin Joint Venture nickel project. Andrew s previous executive roles include Founding Chair, Chief Executive Officer, Deputy Chair of Minara Resources Limited, Chair of the Murrin Murrin Joint Venture and Chair of Poseidon Nickel. Non-executive roles have included Director of the Australian Export Finance and Insurance Corporation, Director of the West Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy and President of Athletics Australia. Appointed Chair of Fortescue Metals Group on 18 July 2003, Andrew became Chief Executive Officer in 2005 before resigning to take up non-executive responsibilities again as Chair (elect) on 18 July Since the inception of Fortescue in 2003, Andrew has been responsible for leading the company to its current $15 billion market capitalisation and status as the fourth largest global iron ore exporter. As a start-up company Fortescue s investment in the Australian resources sector is without parallel, having spent or committed up to the present day some US$15 billion. Andrew is also a substantial supporter and official public Ambassador of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. In 2013, Andrew and his wife Nicola were the first Australians to pledge half of their wealth to charity while living. With the support of the Pope and the senior Islamic authority Andrew has launched the Global Freedom Network, an organisation established to end slavery around the world. The Global Slavery Index, run by Andrew s Walk Free Foundation, estimates there are around 16 million people living in slavery in India and Pakistan. It is estimated that slavery exists in 162 countries. The Walk Free Foundation s mission is to end modern slavery in our generation by mobilising a global activist movement, generating the highest quality research, enlisting business and raising unprecedented levels of capital to drive change in those countries and industries bearing the greatest responsibility for slavery today. Andrew is an Adjunct Professor of the China Southern University and a long-standing Fellow of the Institute. President s Award - Dr Robert Johnson FAusIMM Dr Bob Johnson has been a Member of the AusIMM since 1967 and a Fellow for the past 12 years. Helped through university by a scholarship from the Joint Coal Board of New South Wales, Bob completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Geology at the University of New South Wales in He went on to complete a PhD in Applied Geology and to lecture in mathematical geology.

Deciding that he could contribute something back to the industry that had supported him, Bob pioneered the use of computer software for modelling and analysis, with his first customers being the coal mines of eastern Australia. His company, Earth Science Computer Services, processed data for mining companies for several years, generating countless contour plans, cross-sections and reserve reports. In 1981, realising that the number of customers that could benefit from his software was limited only by the amount of work his bureau service could undertake and taking advantage of the fact that computers were getting small enough for individuals to own Bob started Maptek to write software to allow customers to start doing the work themselves. Today Maptek provides elite software and services to the mining industry: Maptek Vulcan 3D modelling and mine planning software is installed at more than 1700 sites worldwide Maptek I Site 3D laser scanning hardware and software has revolutionised mine surveying Maptek BlastLogic provides intelligent 3D drillhole validation and load design software Maptek Eureka features an interactive 3D environment for visualising and interpreting geophysical and seismic data Maptek PerfecDig is an intuitive system to rapidly compare excavations against designs in the field, improving decision making and resource recovery. Delegating the day-to-day running of Maptek to trusted employees, Bob made time to indulge his passion for geology by setting up an exploration company in South Australia in Publicly listed since 2002, Havilah Resources has defined several significant resources that it is looking to develop. Bob retired as Chair in Using Maptek products in real-world scenarios on a daily basis gave Bob the impetus to guide Maptek into new areas for the benefit of all customers. In 2011 Maptek celebrated 30 years of service to the mining industry. Mining companies around the world recognise Dr Johnson s unique contribution. Honorary Fellowship Award Professor Eric J Grimsey HonFAusIMM(CP) Professor Eric Grimsey is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Institute for his extensive contribution to The AusIMM. Eric received the President s Award in 2008 for his contributions to minerals education and for his service to The AusIMM as Vice President and Councillor. In 2003 Eric served as Chair of the Code of Ethics Review Committee and since 2007 he has been Chair of the Ethics Committee. Eric played a major role in refining the complaints process and publicising the work of the committee in The AusIMM Bulletin and at Congress. The Code of Ethics exists to ensure that all AusIMM members uphold and enhance the honesty, honour, integrity and dignity of their profession. Member awareness of the Code of Ethics and associated codes is an important function of the Ethics Committee and Eric Grimsey is a leader in this process. Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, Minister for Industry The AusIMM Board is pleased to award the title of Honorary Fellow to the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, Federal Minister for Industry. Minister Macfarlane is the longest-serving Australian Minister for Resources since the portfolio was created in the early-1980s. He served as Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources from November 2001 till December 2007 when the Howard Government lost office. He held the shadow portfolio for the majority of the period and was appointed to the super-portfolio of Industry (including Resources) in September 2013 on the election of the Abbott Government.

Mr Macfarlane is recognised by the resources industry and the many stakeholders who deal with him as a passionate and effective advocate for the industry. He has had an enduring impact on the policy and politics of the resources portfolio and in conjunction with his counterparts across the political spectrum, has built and maintained a bi-partisan approach to resources policy that is rare, if not unique in Australian federal politics. Mr Macfarlane is proud that his grandfather was a geologist, and displays his forebear s geological pick in his Federal Ministerial office. He is highly-regarded by industry representatives and retains the strong support of communities. Beryl Jacka Award - Louis Rozman FAusIMM(CP) This award recognises both the commitment and outstanding contributions Louis Rozman has made to The AusIMM. The award serves to acknowledge Louis previous roles and ongoing work for the Institute, including his roles on the JORC Committee and the Board of Chartered Professionals, his reinvigoration of the Sydney Branch and his current role as Chair of the VALMIN Committee. Louis dedication and commitment have coincided with him building a successful career in the mining industry where he is regarded as role model for both new entrants and those with well-established resumes. Louis is a Mining Engineer and a Fellow and Chartered Professional of The AusIMM. Mineral Industry Technique Award Professor Kevin Galvin

This award recognises Professor Kevin Galvin s work in the initial concept, design, optimisation and commercial implementation of the reflux classifier. Kevin applied basic scientific principles to take an already useful piece of equipment through a stepchange for significantly enhanced efficiency and widened applicability. The reflux classifier is a novel autogenous water-based device for separating fine mineral particles based on their size and density. In its initial form the device demonstrated some advantages in certain applications, however, in recent years an ingenious technical breakthrough has transformed its effectiveness and application. These devices are used primarily for gravity separation and hence the size effect on separation has been a major limit in their effectiveness. Kevin surmised that if the lamellar plates were separated by just the right distance then the separation factor due to particle size would disappear. He then built the modern version of the machine from the mathematical design and the results have been astounding. The device is currently manufactured and distributed by FL Smidth/Ludowici to major coal producers throughout the world and is finding similar utility in applications for non-coal minerals. John Russell MAusIMM John Russell joined The AusIMM in 1983 and has been a member for 22 years. John was a young mechanical engineer from Mount Isa Mines when he moved to Toowoomba in 1985 to form Russell Mineral Equipment to further his ambition to invent and manufacture world-class mining and mineral processing equipment. At Mount Isa Mines he had shown a talent for solving process problems by designing and building special purpose machines. John turned his attention to the relining of grinding mills, traditionally a slow, dangerous and costly business. Russell Mineral Equipment s first mill relining machine was purchased by Mount Isa Mines in Russell Mineral Equipment later developed the RUSSELL 7 (seven axis), RUSSELL 8 (eight axis) mill relining machines and the TWIN 8 mill relining machines (a pair of independent relining machines) that have further enhanced the relining performance in the world s largest mills. Today Russell Mineral Equipment is recognised as the world s leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of mineral grinding mill relining machines and associated equipment. This award recognises John Russell s major contribution to the safety and efficiency of grinding mill relines. Jim Torlach Health and Safety Award - Flight Safety Foundation For members of the Institute there is no higher priority than ensuring the safety and health of all people in the minerals sector. The primary goal of the AusIMM Jim Torlach Health and Safety Award is to reward best practice and raise awareness of what can be done and is being done to continually improve health and safety outcomes in the minerals industry. The nature of the mining industry means that aviation is integral to discovering, developing and operating mines around the world. Often contracted out to suppliers, aviation has been the source of several major incidents and fatalities in the industry and remains one of the industry s most critical risks. In many jurisdictions around the world it is a challenging task for mining companies to assure themselves of the quality and safety of the many aviation suppliers they might use. In response to this critical safety risk and the dependence of mining on aviation providers a team of dedicated and passionate professionals within the mining industry has worked to develop the Basic Aviation Risk

(BAR) Standard over the past decade. The standard creates a minimum operating framework and requirements that mining companies can use to assess and manage the aviation contractors who service their operations and exploration areas. Prior to the BAR Standard each resource company had its own aviation safety standard. This subjected aircraft operators to a diverse and often ambiguous set of requirements within already diverse global regulatory requirements. The variety of standards and audits meant that aircraft operators underwent multiple annual audits for various resource company clients, diverting their focus and resources away from flight operations and maintenance oversight. The ability of an individual resource company to influence change within an aircraft operator s practices in response to audit findings was often limited. The BAR Standard not only allows for efficiency and consistency in managing safety and quality but also raises the bar for the minimum acceptable standards for aircraft and airport operations. The BAR Standard has made a huge contribution to safety in the mining industry. The BAR Standard is supported by the International Council on Mining and Metals and has been implemented by a range of major and minor minerals companies around the world. Many tens of thousands of minerals workers are now far safer when travelling by air. The BAR Standard program is a consensus-based industry standard consisting of four components: a risk-based international aviation standard an auditing program, tailored to the standard a range of aviation safety training programs a global safety data analysis program. The program creates a minimum standard for aviation in the industry, providing benefits to both mining companies and aviation companies. The BAR Standard and all the associated audit tools, awareness packages and training tools has made a huge difference to a critical safety risk for the industry. The award is accepted by Greg Marshall on behalf of the Flight Safety Foundation. AusIMM Service Award Professor Ernest Baafi MAusIMM Professor Ernest Baafi has been an AusIMM member for more than 30 years. This award recognises the significant contribution to The AusIMM and the exceptional work undertaken by Ernest. He has been an active participant in the past two Branch planning workshops and has organised successful Branch events during the year. In 2013 Leonard was the first person to speak to the Hong Kong Student Branch as well as presenting at various New Leaders conferences in the past. In many ways Leonard is a true quiet achiever As a relatively new graduate in Rio Tinto Leonard is likely to be moved to another assignment. When this happens the Branch will lose an active committee member, but no doubt another Branch will acquire a pro AusIMM member. Leonard is sure to continue to make a contribution to the Institute in the future. G B O Malley Medal - Justine Jasper SAusIMM This medal commemorates the service to the AusIMM and its members of G B O Malley. It is considered the highest student award and is awarded annually to a Student Member of The AusIMM for the best preparation and presentation of a technical paper. Entitled Investigation into the viability of Lithium Heterotungstate with tungsten carbide suspension as a substitute for organic liquids in dense medium test work on low grade iron ore, Justine s thesis achieved a High Distinction. Justine also co authored a paper entitled Application of the heavy suspension technique for ore beneficiation plant feed characterisation from the Southern Middleback Ranges with J Begelhole and L Koroznikova that was presented by Begelhole at the Second AusIMM International Geometallurgy Conference 2013 in Brisbane. Best Paper Prize - S Bluhm, R G Moreby, F von Glehn and C Pascoe The judging panel, comprised of Rick West, Diana Drinkwater and Roger Gregg, selected the paper entitled Life-of-mine ventilation and refrigeration planning for Resolution Copper Mine by S Bluhm, R G Moreby, F von Glehn and C Pascoe as the best paper published in the proceedings of an AusIMM conference in As in previous years, the choice of the best paper by the three panel members was unanimous. The successful paper for 2013 was included in the proceedings of the Australian Mine Ventilation Conference and carried sufficiently important content for the mining industry to warrant wide publication, specifically within The AusIMM Bulletin (April 2014). This paper was selected from a long-list of 23 papers and from a short-list of six papers. The judges noted that this winning paper was the winner in a strong competition with a larger set of high quality papers than has been the case in previous years. The judging panel also noted the increase in quality of papers over the four years of the award. It is also worth noting that the quality of papers at AusIMM conferences in general is very high.
