1 SoftWhere Europe Q Industry Moves Welcome to the first edition of SoftWhere for We enter the new year with a growing sense of optimism as the recovery in Europe starts to take hold. The search market gained momentum throughout the latter half of 2013, resulting in strong demand for executives to drive growth through innovation and expansion in international markets. For the software industry, product innovation remains centred in the US (although much of the innovation is fuelled by international talent), which has been further exacerbated by the centralisation associated with cloud based services. The complexity and diversity of the European market means that any one size fits all assumption creates profound challenges. European executives must be able to navigate language, currency, legal and regulatory variations as well as addressing the funding issues arising from a more fragmented market. The picture is complicated further by the growing complexity of the technology eco-system, with best of breed provider providing discrete solutions that must be integrated with other systems (in the UK this has been accelerated by the government s focus on supporting smaller and emerging technology players). For the systems integrators, this provides a new revenue stream (albeit smaller than that associated with traditional large ERP implementations) whilst for the largest software players there a multiple acquisition opportunities. For individual executives, it means the skills associated with working across complex eco-systems, whether with external partners or across internal divisions, are at a premium. Each year Russell Reynolds Associates reviews the talent movement across industries. The trend towards cross sector hiring is also continuing, with an increasing number of executives joining software from adjacent sectors. The number of in sector (software to software) moves continues to drop, with the most significant inbound talent coming from professional services (11%) retail (6%) and hardware (11%). Over the past six months there have been a number of key appointments in software. We have summarised many below, both those which have been supported by Russell Reynolds and those which are in the market (we endeavour to be comprehensive but if we have omitted an appointment please do let us know). He was previously Adobe s Marketing Director for APAC. Autodesk Autodesk CEO Carl Bass joined Panzura advisory board. Betsy Rafael has been appointed to the Board of Directors. She retired from Apple in AVG Securities AVG appointed Frank Esser to the supervisory board. Gary Kovacs, former Mozilla CEO, has been appointed CEO of AVG Technologies. Avid Technology Rick Lowenstein has been appointed SVP of Professional Services at Avid Technology. He was VP of Consulting at Adobe. Mitch Weaver has been appointed Vice President, Software Development. He was previously CEO at Translogic Technology. Axway Laurent Bride has been appointed Executive Vice President of Research and Development. He was previously SVP of Advanced Development at SAP. Nick Ferrante has been appointed Executive Vice President of Global Sales. He was previously Director of Worldwide Sales for IBM s business solutions portfolio. CA Inc. CA Technologies has named Ronald Alepian, SVP and Chief Communications Officer. He was previously VP and Group Head of Corporate Marketing and Communications at TMX Group. Lauren Flaherty has been appointed CMO. Previously she was EVP and CMO at Juniper Networks. Ruston Vickers has been appointed Chief Development Officer. He was previously at ITKO, before the CA acquisition. Cisco Systems Martin McPhee has been appointed SVP, Consulting Services. He was previously a Partner at Accenture. Citrix Systems Orla Coughlan has been appointed Human Resources Director, EMEA. She was previously Chief Resources & Talent Officer at Zenith Technologies. Rakesh Narasimhan has been appointed Group VP and General Manager. He was formerly CEO of InstallFree. Ralph Schmidt has been appointed Region Head of Central and Eastern Europe. He was previously the Head of UC&C Western Europe for Huawei. Concur Christian Nern has been appointed General Manager, Germany. He was previously Director Solution Partner & Cloud Services at Microsoft. Confirmit Tore Haggren has been appointed SVP, Voice of the Employee. He joined Confirmit in Terry Lawlor has been appointed EVP for Product Management. He was previously SVP of Strategic Accounts and SVP of Operations at SDL. DST Systems Gregg Givens has been appointed VP, CFO and Treasurer. He was previously the company s VP and Chief Accounting Officer. EMC David Goulden has been appointed CEO of EMC s Information Infrastructure Business. He was previously the firm s CFO. William Green has been appointed to the Board of Directors. He is the former Chairman of Accenture. Simon Walsh has been appointed COO EMEA. He was previously EVP and Member of the Executive Committee at Colt. 2

Byron Vielehr has been appointed Group President, Depository Institutions Services. He was previously President of International and Global Operations for Dun & Bradstreet. Matt Wilcox has been appointed Managing Director, Marketing Strategy and Innovation, Digital Payments. He was previously a strategy and marketing leader at Zions Bank. Fortinet Drew Del Matto has been appointed CFO. He was previously CFO at Symantec. Insight Enterprises Wolfgang Ebermann has been appointed President, EMEA. He was VP and COO CEE at Microsoft.
