4 VOLUNTEERS An important part of our club is to have volunteers who give their time and efforts to keep us thriving. We owe our success to everyone who has volunteered in any way, to make our club what it is today. CO-VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR DIANNE LUTHER Dianne Marie Luther is the daughter of Jack and Caroline Gabrenya from Cleveland s West Side, and a sister to Jim from Garfield Hts. and Karen from Cleveland. Dianne is a 1972 graduate of the former South High School in Cleveland. She married Bill in 1983 and is currently living in Westlake. In 1984, Dianne began her career as a general office secretary at Milan Tool Corp., which is a manufacturer of component aircraft parts and in 2001 she became Office Manager. She has been a member of the I-A since 1992 and after her second general meeting, her volunteer work began. She remembers Pat Gerron asking, If there is anyone that knows anything about computers, please come see me. Encouraged by her husband, she volunteered to help Pat. That 1 st involvement she could say is what structured her into what she is most currently involved with today and that is Membership. The process since then has been streamlined and the job is shared, so it is not so time consuming as it was in the past. She gives a lot of credit to Marge Flynn, her friend, her co-worker. Thank you Marge and thank you for sharing with me the honor of Co-Volunteer of the Year, I couldn t do it without you. Her other volunteer involvements are with McDonough s Brigade, managing the ads in the monthly bulletin, assisting fellow members with bulletin articles, updating the table displays in the Pub, and publication of the St. Patrick s Day Mass booklet as part of the Liturgical committee. She was also on the McNeeley Library Committee, maintained the window displays, headed a Tuesday night cleaning team, and gardening. She would like to thank the Board for electing her as Co-Volunteer of the year. It is an honor to be recognized and a privilege to be a member of The West Side Irish-American Club W.S.I.A. CO-VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR MARGE FLYNN Marge is the second of four children born to John Graven of Aghagower, Westport, Co. Mayo and Margaret McHugh of Cappa, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. She is the proud sister of Mary Clayton, Angela Lark (deceased) and Jack Graven. She grew up in the West Park area of Cleveland attending Our Lady of Angels grade school and St. Joseph Academy and has taken several courses at Cuyahoga Community College. After she was widowed and her children left for college she decided to add the West Side Irish-American Club to her list of other organizations she shared her time with. She started volunteering at the Club by helping to put the monthly bulletins together. For over 20 years, while working full time and after retiring she has been very active in the Club as an integral part of The Fish Fry group, McDonough s Brigade, Steve Malloy Reverse Raffle, Night at the Races, Tuesday morning maintenance group, interim Rental chairman and is responsible for updating the info for the club website and the ad in the Irish American News. The majority of her time spent currently is as the co-chair of Membership with Dianne Luther and she is the first to admit, she could not do this without Dianne. This is a very time consuming job due to the fact they do two mass mailings per year sending out renewal notices that have to be entered and cards have to be made and mailed. They also organize volunteers and man a booth at the Irish Cultural Festival every July. She is a longtime member of St. Martin of Tours parish in Valley City where she and husband Jack were married in Together they have four children and seven grandchildren. Marge wishes to extend her sincere appreciation to the Board for being chosen as Co-Volunteer of the year.

11 Our History 1950 to 1955 By Peggy Calvey Patton The 1950 s was one of the most prosperous periods of the 20th century. Peace-time brought an industrial and manufacturing base to Cleveland along with the opening of the Ford and Chevy plants on Brookpark Road. The city s population grew to 914,808 residents making it the seventh largest city in the country. Well-paying jobs lured a flow of migrants from the south and created a surge of Irish immigrants coming to Cleveland. The WSIA club prospered with a total of $34, in total assets and many new members. The club was still using the Mitchell Hall on W. 74 th street, Art McChrystal, the club s first formal financial officer, attempted to work out an arrangement with the Mitchell family to sign a more permanent lease or buy the hall outright, but an agreement was not reached. The club then looked at Ohio Tool Company at 3141 W. 110 Street, a storefront building located at Madison Avenue and vacant lots at W 117 th & Western Avenue and all were rejected. Then the Madison Theatre moved to a larger space and vacated a property at 9410 Madison Avenue. The club purchased it for $32, in July of 1951 and started extensive renovations. The crowning jewel of the new WSIA was the installation of the dance floor, which many said was the finest in the area. The members were ecstatic to finally have a permanent location, but renovations proved to be costly. The members pledged $3, (which was repaid with interest) plus two separate additional bank loans of $5, and $10, The last meeting at Mitchell Hall took place December 28 th, 1951 and a 1952 New Year s Eve dance was the first event held in the still unfinished hall. During the 1950 s traditional ongoing activities of off-site events were the St. Patrick s Day Parade evening dance at the public auditorium and many various parades. The annual Irish Picnic was held on the spacious lawn of Incarnate Word Academy in Parma Hts. The club arranged for buses to pick up members in the Sears & Roebuck parking lot at W 110 St. and Lorain Ave. What would you give to be on one of those memorable bus rides home? Irish-ness ruled.
