9 <<<<< 009 Willie McCullum, our 2017 Program Participant of the Year, is working his way towards becoming a waiter at his favorite Mexican restaurant. Based on his history of overcoming challenges, and the job training he is receiving at Anthesis, you can bet he is working hard to achieve this goal. As a child born with Spina Bifida, Willie was told he would never walk. However, with his determination, perseverance, and support of his Aunt Joyce, Willie did walk. He graduated from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, and went on to study acting and drama. When he wasn t pursuing his Hollywood dreams, Willie studied computers. A family move to the Montclair area and a determination to expand his employment skills brought him to Anthesis. Willie joined Anthesis through our Work Program in October He began developing his production and assembly skills by labeling and packaging products. With a number of new skills under his belt, Willie was an ideal substitute for the various work groups, or enclaves, that Anthesis has working at local businesses. As a result of Willie s positive attitude and success in a variety of positions, Willie now works with FSC Lighting as a member of our newest supported employment group. Mitch Gariador Executive Director Willie is well on his way to achieving his ultimate goal: to be employed within the community at his favorite Mexican restaurant. Having worked his way through the various job training and support groups at Anthesis, Willie has the right attitude and is gaining the skills necessary for him to achieve his dreams. We look forward to continuing to support Willie on his journey.

12 0012 >>> In August 2017, our business partner John Watkins, President of FSC Lighting, hosted our first peer-to-peer fundraising event at Union-on-Yale in Claremont. John invited his supply chain of vendors and friends to enjoy cocktails, great food, and to learn more about Anthesis. The live auction and donations generated from this one event was almost $60,000, enough to purchase much-needed new vehicles for Anthesis. Furthermore, the connections we made through John with other businesses in our community will help provide future opportunities for the individuals in our program. Anthesis greatly appreciates the support of business partners like John Watkins.
