1 2018 ABYC Slate of Candidates September 3, 2018 Dear Members of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and Anchor Members of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, On behalf of the ABYC Board of Directors and ABYC Nominating Committee, I have the honor of presenting you with our 2018 Election Slate. Please find enclosed a Sample Ballot, Candidate Resumes and the Polling Schedule. This is a strong group of active sailors whom we are very lucky to have as members. I would like to thank the Nominating Committee for their time and efforts to select this diverse group of candidates. You will be voting for four of the six candidates. According to our bylaws, you must vote for FOUR candidates for the ABYC Board of Directors or your ballot will be deemed invalid. ABYC Board of Directors Candidates (4 positions): Nigel Brownett Stephen Mueller Martyn Bookwalter Rob Stropky Carol Kohfahl Mike Van Dyke Leasehold Trust Candidates (2 positions): Mike Baumann Ken Reiff All of these candidates deserve our respect and thanks. They have taken the time to step up for something they believe is important. These candidates are people who care about our Club and are prepared to offer their time, energy and commitment to make sure ABYC remains the place to BE. Polling Schedule Voting Dates and Times: Wednesday-Sunday, September5th-9th 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM - ABYC Office Wednesday - Thursday September 12th - 13th - ABYC Office 9AM to 5PM Friday, September 14th (9:00AM to 8:00 PM - Office 9-5 then Upstairs Saturday, September 15th 9:00AM - 8:00 PM Sunday, September 16th - 9AM to 5PM Wednesday, Thursday -Sept AM to 5PM Friday, September 21st - Noon to 8:00PM (Election Day) The results will be announced at the September 21 st, 2018 General Membership meeting. Nigel Brownette Dear ABYC Friends and Families, Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself and express my interest in running for election as a 2018/2019 ABYC Board of Directors member.

3 Nigel Brownette Dear ABYC Friends and Families, Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself and express my interest in running for election as a 2018/2019 ABYC Board of Directors member. Originally born in Australia in I grew up in a sailing family. In 2008 I became a permanent resident of the USA. A software engineer, I own and operate a software development and consultancy group based in Long Beach, CA. Over the past 12 months I have served as Secretary to the ABYC Board of Directors, and have enjoyed becoming involved with the many projects, programs, sailing events and day to day operations here at ABYC. Also being an active Viper 640 owner, member and competitor with the ABYC Viper 640 fleet, and now with both of my sons sailing Optis and Sabots with the ABYC junior program I m spending lots of time at the club. 4 Mike Van Dyke It is an honor and a privilege to be asked to run for the board of ABYC. I have been fortunate to sit on several committees at the club over the past 10 years and have enjoyed the experience interacting with the club and the leadership. As background, I am a fourth generation Long Beach native with a deep boating background. Our family has a power boat, a Cal 20 and then the miscellaneous 29er, skiffs etc. My wife and I joined ABYC in 2009 and went in on a partnership on a Cal 20 and have been enjoying ABYC ever since. My son and daughter both grew up sailing and have enjoyed sailing out of ABYC as well, my son with the high school sailing and Cal 20 s and my daughter with her 29er that she competed in at the 29ers last summer. I work in the financial service industry as a partner in The Shadden Group at Morgan Stanley. In my role I have been on the other side of the table working with nonprofits to solve complex financial problems. I also believe in giving back and have volunteered over the years to organizations that our family have been part of. D. Martyn Bookwalter Thank you for the opportunity to run for the ABYC Board of Directors. I ve been sailing my entire life and on the West Coast since 1980. First I became a member of LAYC.

I ve been on race committee, and served as a PRO for almost all of the 2018 ABYC event calendar. I ve also served as PRO for Lido Twilights for many year s.

5 D. Martyn Bookwalter Thank you for the opportunity to run for the ABYC Board of Directors. I ve been sailing my entire life and on the West Coast since First I became a member of LAYC. In 2006 I moved to ABYC. I sail and own Bastante, a Benetou 1 st 405 that s here in basin 5, andi also sail Lido 14 # I am very active in ABYC s on the water club activities. I ve been on race committee, and served as a PRO for almost all of the 2018 ABYC event calendar. I ve also served as PRO for Lido Twilights for many year s. For the past 10 years I ve maintained the 10 race marks in the bay, 5 of which I built from scratch. Professionally, I was a Production Designer/Art Director in Theatre, Film, and Television in the US, England, and the USSR. My work with MAD tv, earned 8 consecutive Emmy nominations. I look forward to working with and serving the ABYC family in a larger way. Martyn

6 Rob Stropky Thank you for the opportunity to run for reelection to the board at ABYC. I have served as an ABYC Director for the past two years and would like to continue with the work that I have been doing over that time. I started sailing about 12 years ago and I joined ABYC with my family (Quena, Tommy, and Karina) five years ago. Since then, the Club has become a huge part of my life. My proudest accomplishment of my first term was reviving the ABYC burgee collection after it had languished for 25 years. This past year, I also coordinated the implementation of the first Adult Learn-to-Sail program at ABYC. Working with the Tempest Fleet and other members, we now offer adults the opportunity to learn to sail, while earning an American Sailing Association (ASA) certification! I believe that this program is critical in attracting new members and retaining existing members in the future. Additionally, while serving on the Board the past two years, I have helped guide day-to-day operations as well as the Club s future. From getting better chairs for the Quarterdeck waterside porch, to helping run a regatta, to supporting plans for the Club s future financial health I have always been there. I have never missed a meeting or a vote. If reelected, I plan to complete the development of the burgee database to allow our members to access information such as, donor name, location, images, websites of clubs, and more. I plan to implement a display of local burgees in the new bar after renovation is completed, as well. I also would like to continue to shepherd our new adult sailing program as it continues and grows. Finally, I ll continue to help out wherever I m needed and have some fun doing it! I look forward to continuing to serve our members. Thank you for the opportunity.

7 Carol Kofahl I have volunteered to be a candidate for the Board of Directors. Some of my skill sets include the ability to work well in groups, brainstorm, and design task analyses and timelines to execute events. I honed these skills when on the Norwalk- La Mirada USD Superintendent s Cabinet (3 years), as a director of a middle school Student Activities and Student Council (8 years), and as Altar Guild Directress at our church,. Since I retired last February, after 40 years of service as a teacher, I have a lot more free time to commit to ABYC. You probably have seen me engraving perpetual trophies in the Scoring Room, a voluntary position for 14 years. Currently, as chair of the Yacht Clubs of Long Beach inter-club committee, I ve served with many ABYC members and other clubs members for 8 years to organize multiple fund raising events for The Children s Clinic, including ABYC s own Halloween Charity Regatta and Silent Auction. I was privileged to be the first female Commodore of Hobie Fleet 3 in Long Beach, during its hay-day when we had over 120 members, and we ran multiple national points regattas each year. My husband Dave (best jokes ever) and I have been members of ABYC for 26 years, racing our Cal 20 Sparwars. Both of our sons grew up here in the Junior Program, and still enjoy sailing as adults. Married for 41 years, we have raced together for 42 years, (that proves love!), and Dave fully supports me in this longterm commitment. We are proud of-- and fervently support--abyc s volunteer culture, and cherish the friends we have made here. ABYC IS the Place to Be. Fair winds!

It has been a busy two years and I appreciate all the advice and support you have shown me. During these years I have particularly enjoyed being involved with the Junior Advisory Committee and getting kids out on the water. As the Director in charge of social events I have worked with our fabulous ABYC Social Advisory Committee. I have also updated our bar offerings and had the opportunity to greet everyone from behind the BBQ grill. It has been a lot of fun for the Mueller family to be involved in all the great events at ABYC. I hope you have been pleased with my performance and I look forward to serving as your Vice Commodore.
