He took time to explain the challenges, the administration is facing with the conversion to IIEST - adapting to the new mission, coping with the inadequacy of infrastructure, planning for increased student in-take, achieving the desired teacher-student ratio, and tackling a number of other administrative and facility related issues. During the course of the conversation, I asked him whether there was a master plan for the Institute. Dr. Bandyopadhyay responded that there is a master plan for the sites, but not a comprehensive document that an academic institution should have, and acknowledged the urgent need to develop one. Shortly afterwards, I met the Director Prof. A. K. Roy (who to my pleasant surprise, was accompanying a potential benefactor interested in funding a new school in our IIEST). In the brief conversation we had, I brought up the need for a master plan. He too acknowledged the need for it and mentioned that there is already one in the works. He did indicate that he would be happy if I followed up on that matter. More recently, in September 2015, alumni communities roiled up the social media discussing an agreement with the Cricket Association of Bengal concerning the leasing of the Institute grounds of Oval and Lords. In the flood of comments that followed, I spotted at least one that brought up the need for a master plan. So what is a master plan? For the uninitiated, a master plan is essentially a framework for orderly development over a specific time frame (often years). It is important to understand that a master plan is a living document that is updated periodically or whenever there is a substantial change in its bases. Based on Prof. Roy s comment, it appears that our Institute is in the process of developing its master plan. Prior to the conversion of IIEST, a nominal master plan could have been acceptable given the paucity of funds for facilities and infrastructure and the snail pace of growth. But with the conversion to IIEST, it became essential to upgrade and expand the facilities and infra-structure to meet the standards of those in an Institute of National Importance. As a result, a robust master plan to ensure that the upgrade and future growth occurs in a planned and systematic way is critical. A good master plan is grounded in good background information that covers existing facilities, infrastructure (i.e.

2 2 roads, pedestrian networks, parking, water, sanitary sewer, storm water systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, fire protection systems, data/telecommunication systems, etc.), campus population and demographics, natural and built environment, surrounding land uses, urban design, and a slew of other things. A good master plan also responds to the voices of the stakeholders - the students, the teachers, the administrative staff, the support staff, security personnel, and the campus residents. It involves development of near and long term requirements based on analyses of the background information and the input from the stakeholders, which are vetted by the stakeholders (or their representatives). It explores multiple improvement concepts, and selection of a preferred concept that best addresses the needs and priorities of the campus and it stakeholders. The master plan includes a phased implementation plan for the year horizon and budgetary estimates. Finally, a good master plan meticulously documents the information collected, the analyses conducted, the concepts developed and the implementation plan proposed that can be periodically updated. How do we develop a master plan? The Institute has its own Town and Regional Planning Department, which of course has the faculty with adequate capabilities for developing a master plan. However, their academic commitments and engagement may not allow them to devote the time and efforts needed for such a process intensive, elaborate and robust document. In my opinion, the Institute should procure the services of a capable consulting firm which has experience in developing master plans. Select faculty members can serve as technical representative for the Institute and serve as a sounding board for the consultant. What does the master plan accomplish? It establishes a framework for development. As funding becomes available, and facility and infrastructure decisions are made, the master plan provides the road map for the logical systematic development of the campus and an efficient use of the resources. Our Institute is in the midst of a transformation. To secure a bright future for the Institute in general and the campus in particular, a well-rounded master plan can go far. We, the alumni, should urge the powers that be to initiate the master planning process at the earliest and push for its completion before critical facility and infrastructure decisions are made. 3 3 TECHNICAL SEMINAR ORGANISED BY GAABESU WITH IIEST A Seminar on Energy and Environmental Challenges: Indian Perspective (EECIP 2015) was organised by GAABESU (Global Alumni Association of BESU, now IIEST, Shibpur) in association with Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur on 21 st Aug, 2015 at M N Dastur School of Material Science, IIEST Shibpur Campus. Mr. Tathagato Roy (66 CE), Governor of Tripura inaugurated the event and shared his views on this aspect. Mr. Roy is a GAABESU Life Member; a brilliant student (stood 6 th in Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of West Bengal in 1961) and Recipient of Jagadish Chandra Bose National Science Talent Search Scholarship (61-66); a distinguished engineer (retired as Chief Engineer, Metro Railway, Calcutta) and academician (Ex & first Head of Construction Engineering of Jadavpur University). Prof. Chaitanyamoy Ganguly (68 MetE) was the key note speaker. He is a Retired Distinguished Scientist, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India and a former Head of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), credited with many innovations in the field of nuclear material science. In 2002, he was honoured by the Government of India with 4 th highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri. Prof. Santanu Kumar Karmakar (83 ME), Dean of Alumni Affairs and External Relations, IIEST Shibpur and the first Honorary Secretary of GAABESU welcomed the guests, delegates and the participants. Shri Syama Prasad Datta, Chairman, Seminar Organising Committee elaborated the objective of the seminar. Shri Debidas Datta, Director (Generation), WBSEDCL was the special guest of the inaugural session. Research paper contributions were from the various R & D centres and educational institutions. These picnics were full of foods, games (Cricket, Tug-of-war), walking along riverside and NIRVEJAL ADDA. The book contains translation of carefully selected well-known short stories, poems and songs of Tagore. His first book An Endless Journey is well acclaimed by the readers. Kumar Bappaditya Salui 99 ME PROMOTIONAL EVENT FOR FEATURE FILM BY GAABESU In collaboration with the Students' Quiz Society-Quizmaniac BEings, GAABESU organized a Quiz Competition at the campus as a part of our promotional events for Bengali Feature Film DWITIYO RIPU (দ ব ত য় দ ব প ) by two of our alumni. GAABESU EC members also took part in the competition to encourage the students, alumni and people present in that occasion. GAABESU team went up to the Final Round. Debasish Kar 85 ARCH ETERNAL COMPANION (BOOK) & DWITIYA RIPU (FILM) BY ALUMNI Translating Rabindranath s works into English is a daunting task by all means, but it is a worthy effort because they contain some of the most profound of his ideas. Mukulesh DWITIYO RIPU is a psychological drama revolving around an inspiring new age writer who is struggling to publish his first novel. The various problems he faces from the publishers and the conflict in his love life is the basic premises of the plot. There is a hint of carefree life of today's youth or more appropriately bohemian lifestyle. Director of this film are Abhijit Chowdhury (2005 ETC) and Assistant Director is Tathagat Das (2013 CIVIL). The book Matrivasay Karigorividya: Sahaj Electrical Engineering (ম ত ভ ষ য় ক র গ র দ য : সহজ ইল কর ক ইর র য় র ) authored by Gautam Kumar Mandal, AGM, DSP, has been officially released on by Sri Shyamal Biswas (Former Director, Information & Public Relation, NEC, Government of India and Former Additional Director, Information & Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal and Former Press Secretary, Governor of West Bengal), who was one of the dignitaries present in the Book Release ceremony at Paschimbanga Bangla Academy Sabha Ghar (at Nandan complex), Kolkata. Debu Chaudhuri 68 EE S N BOSE PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Partha Pratim Dutta (an UG student from Electrical Engineering department of IIEST Shibpur) had a memorable experience at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Partha was working in a project titled igc3: A Fully Electronic Microfabricated Gas Chromatograph with Capacitive Detectors for Indoor Pollutants under the guidance of Prof. Yogesh Gianchandani. The project dealt with the assembly of all the igc3 components followed by their testing, standardization of results and performance analysis. The experience in University of Michigan both with respect to Academics as well as Social life has been fantastic for Partha. The project turned out to be really interesting and he completed the work five days ahead of schedule. Sandeep Chatterjee 98 ME EXTRA WORKING DAY AT IIEST TO HONOR DR. KALAM IIEST worked an extra day on 1st August, 2015 (Saturday) as a mark of honour for Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Mr. Kalam participated in the inauguration of Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur. On that occasion, he noted that a good educational model is the need of the hour to ensure that the students grow to contribute towards the economic growth of the nation. Special capacities are required to be built in education system for nurturing the students. The capacities which are required to be built are research and enquiry, creativity and innovation, use of high technology, entrepreneurial and moral leadership. Indranath Sinha 82 MIN QUIZMANIACS & NASCENT QUIZZOGEN- THE FRESHERS QUIZ Founded way back on 9 th April, 2008, Quizmaniac BEings is the oldest and most prestigious club of IIEST Shibpur. Under the mentorship of Dr. Indranath Sinh, the club has come a long way from its humble beginnings in N235, to having already organized the first of its kind and the largest quiz of Kolkata. Souvik Maity 17 CE (3 rd Year) OBITUARY Prof Ajit Kumar Chattopadhyay, an illustrious alumnus of our institute breathed his last today. Born in 1936, he completed his undergraduate in Electrical Engineering in 1958, Masters from IIT Kharagpur in 1963 and Ph. D. from the University of Manchester (UMIST), England in After serving Guest Keen Williams, Ltd. and the Indian Standards Institution, New Delhi, Prof. Chattopadhyay joined the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur as a faculty in 1960, became a Professor in 1976 and was the Head of the Department during He was also a Visiting Professor with the University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq. Prof. Chattopadhyay was a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, India, and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE). He is listed in several international biographies. He has been the Chairman of the IEEE-IAS Calcutta Chapter since it was founded in He was elected as IEEE-IAS Distinguished Lecturer in 2002 and has delivered 25 invited lectures to various IEEE chapters throughout the world. He received the Bimal Bose Award in 1986 from the IETE for his outstanding contributions in power electronics. He received the Bharatiya Cutler Hammer Prize, in

7 7 1986, the Tata Rao Prize, in 1993 and 1994, and a Certificate of Merit in 1992 for his papers. He received many accolades throughout his extraordinary academic career and proved to be an internationally recognized researcher and leader in the field of Power Electronics and Electrical Machine Drives. He is considered as one of the pioneers for initiating research in the referred field in our country, way back in the sixties of the past century. Dr. Chattopadhyay was elected IEEE Fellow in 1991 for 'the leadership in the development of Power Electronics research and educational programs in India'. After retiring from IIT Kharagpur in 1995, he became an Emeritus Professor in our institute from 1995 and remained so till the last day of his life. He has been honoured as a Distinguished Alumnus of our Institute in Swapan Saha 88 EE (15 Jul 2015) Our beloved Asim da (Asim Kumar Mitra, 62CE) is no more with us. He breathed his last at around 11.00PM tonight. A very active member of GAABESU, Asim da used to feel proud for being an ex-student of B.E. College and for the West Bengal PWD where he served as a very bright and popular officer till his retirement on superannuation as Chief Engineer. He was very jovial and always believed in team work. He maintained his jovial spirit even when he was counting his last days. Asim da had his schooling in Ballygunge Government High School, wrote his Intermediate Science from St. Xaviers College, Calcutta before joining B.E. College. In PWD he worked in many places both in PWD and PWRD. Once he resigned from PWD and joined State Bank of India in a senior position but after about a year he came back. While in service in PWD he did his Masters in Structures from Jadavpur University. He headed ADB and World Bank aided highway projects in PWRD for quite a long time. After his retirement he worked as Senior Consultant of LASA in many projects in India and abroad. We will miss his smiling face in future GAABESU and other professional programs. His only daughter, who stays in UK, is expected to reach tomorrow for cremation and last rites. I pray that his soul rest in peace. Syama Prasad Datta 67 CE (22 Jul 2015) This is to inform you about the sad demise of our alumnus, Mr. Gautam K. Chatterjee, B.E. (73 ETC). He had retired from Oil India Pvt. Ltd. three years back and was living in Kolkata. He suffered massive stroke yesterday evening and succumbed to death in Mumbai at his daughter's home. He happens to be my own maternal uncle and we are still coping with this shock. I hope you would convey this message to our friends here and abroad to those who knew him as a friend and a guide. May his soul rest in peace. Manami Talukder 13 EE (04 Aug 2015) Subrata Ray ( ), a Life Member of GAABESU, actively supported various activities including Gymnasium upgrade. Subrata (63 ME) died in a Kolkata Nursing Home in the morning of Sunday, August 09, He will be mourned across this part of the country by his many friends, colleagues and acquaintances for his unique nature of warm-heartedness. He was a big name in Servicing Industry of boilers in India. After graduation, he joined Babcock & Wilcox India in Service Department in January He underwent extensive hands on training in Babcock UK and Gotaverken, Sweden (a licensee of B&W UK). He became Chief Service Engineer in B & W India, Kolkata in He left B&W India in 1987 and set up his own company Thermal Consultants and Services Pvt. Ltd. He ran this Company till 1997 when Mitsui Babcock Ltd. UK (previously known as Babcock &Wilcox, UK) took over the operations of this company and Subrata became General Manager, Projects and Engineering. He retired from Mitsui Babcock IN in 2003 and joined as one of the Partners in Powertech Services (this Firm was formed by his colleagues who worked in Mitsui Babcock and B&W India). He was with this Firm till death on 09 Aug, I deeply mourn his sad demise. Asit Palit 63 ME (14 Aug 2015) Satyangshu Chatterjee, a 1960 graduate in Civil Engineering passed away on August 17, 2015 in Chicago at age 77. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Suchitra Chatterjee and son Neel. He died from lung infection and subsequent heart failure. He served in BBJ (a consortium of Braithwaite Burn and Jessop), BSL (Bokaro Steel Plant) and MECON before immigrating to USA in Throughout his career in India he worked on steel structures (especially of steel plants and heavy metallurgical industries) in India and abroad. In a nutshell, he can be described as an expert of structural engineering. Kanchan De 71 CE (22 Aug 2015) This to inform the B. E. College Ex-students fraternity that my uncle Anupam Banerjee (60 Arch) has passed away to his heavenly abode at the wee hours today in Waterloo city, Ontario, Canada. He was 79. Otherwise hale and hearty, he had undergone a bypass surgery after complaining a chest pain about a week back. While recuperating at the hospital, suffered a massive cardiac arrest leading to his death. Ashish Banerjee 77 ME (24 Aug 2015) Feeling very very sad my class mate, hostel mate and lifelong friend Amit Datta (70EE) has left the earthly world today morning at 3.00 A.M. He had a golden voice and charmed us with the songs of Hemanta, Manabendra, Shyamal. He was a lecturer in BEC for about two years around We also

8 8 worked at DCPL for more than two decades. He is survived by his wife Mridula and son Dr. Anubhav, a NASA scientist. May his soul rest in peace. Ajay K. Debnath 70 EE (08 Sep 2015) With much regret and a heavy heart, I would like to notify the passing away of Sri Bijoy Prasad Mazumder on September 1, 2015, at his residence in Calcutta, India. He was my class mate and we graduated together in Civil Engineering in After graduation he joined Bridge and Roof Company and had a distinguished career, where he rose to the rank of chief General Manager. After retirement, he joined Mistry Construction Company as a Director where he worked till the end. He was a brilliant Engineer and a very able Manager of great distinction. We will miss him dearly and pray for his soul to rest in peace. Kajal K. Gupta 56 CE (20 Sep 2015) With melancholy heart, I would like to report that our classmate (my laboratory partner for five years, my hostel mate for four years and my roommate for two years) Dilip K Batabyal (known as Bata during his school and college life) passed away in the early morning of September 1 at California). I first met Bata at the college counter during our admission and then found out later on that he was my next door neighbor at Downing Hall. Bata and Downing Hall days memory totally unforgettable. Bata was a very friendly and jovial person. He was really an addabaj and everybody liked his company. After graduation and one year of training, he joined Jadavpur University for his Master s degree in Environmental Engineering but quit the program to relocate to USA. He came to Philadelphia at the end He got his Master s degree in Structural Engineering from Drexel University and worked in the Nuclear industry for a while. He moved to Tampa around 1974 and stayed there most of the time except a couple of years in the eighties when he was in Houston. Although, I lost contact with him in late eighties, I used to know how he was doing through our common friends. When I heard the news of his passing away, memories keep flooding back. He left behind his wife Swagata, two sons and daughters-in-law in addition to all of his friends. May God give courage to the members of his family to bear the loss calmly. Basu 67 CE (21 Sep 2015) With a very heavy heart I inform you about the sad demise of our beloved Gourangada (Gouranga Ganguli) at 8-30AM on 28 th Septembe,r 2015 at his Salt Lake residence. A graduate of BE College (now IIEST, Shibpur) (Civil ), Gouranga da worked in PWD GoWB for a long period till his retirement as Engineer-in-Chief and Ex-Officio Secretary. He was a fine engineer, excelled both in design and construction. He worked in Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners for 18 years right from inception to completion of Second Hooghly Bridge (Vidyasagar Setu) on deputation from PWD. As Engineer in Chief he was also holding concurrent charge of Chairman, Mackintosh Burn Limited and held the position for a long period after retirement. Besides Vidyasagar Setu he was involved in the construction of large number of important structures. He was a person of pleasing personality and was loved and respected by all. A very active member of GAABESU, B E College 1953 entrant batch and many other professional societies. He made lot of contribution in different projects for the benefit of the students of B.E. College. Gourangada left behind his wife Dr Sadhana Ganguli, two sons, daughters-in-law, grand sons and grand daughters and a large number of relatives, friends, and admirers. At 2.00pm from his Salt Lake residence his body would be taken out for cremation at Keoratala burning ghat. I pray his soul to rest in peace. Syama Prasad Datta 67 CE (28 Sep 2015) Dr Bholanath Ghosh, popularly known as BNG in Jadavpur University, breathed his last on 23 rd September after prolonged kidney affliction. A devoted teacher, he used to teach geodesy s and survey, and researched extensively on building materials in very useful fields like development of the sandwich composite dockings used in Kolkata Metro construction successfully. He worked on many philanthropic activities, had been responsible for effective running and progressive upgradation of a Girls High School in Jadavpur area, with funds from his own resources and by collection from acquaintances. He completed many benevolent work for the society even during his long period of suffering from the painful medical condition and donated his property at Santipur to the Ramakrishna Mission Belur Math. Universally friendly, always smiling and ready to sacrifice personal comfort for others, BNG will be missed by his batchmates and friends all the while. 9 9 BEYOND EDUCATION AND WORK: REFUSE TO BE A NUMBER On March 5, 2008, I ran and finished Antarctica Marathon under a brutal wintry condition. The temperature was -4 degree centigrade with strong wind and I ran the last 8 km under freezing rain! And at that point I joined an elite group of Marathon runners who completed Marathon race in each of the world s Seven Continent. In 2008, there were only 180 runners who could claim this glory out of seven billion people in the world! Europe: Stockholm, Sweden (1999) Antarctica: King George Island (2008) Africa: Luxor, Egypt (2007) North America: New York City, 04 Asia: Singapore (2005) South America: Rio, Brazil (2006) Oceania: Sydney, Australia (2007) I started running in June 1992 at an advanced age of 44, just to avoid diabetes! Diabetes was running rampant in my family. As of April 2015, I ran and finished 39 Marathon races around the world. So far, I and another person of Indian origin have the honor to complete Seven Continent Marathon, including Antarctica. As of December 31, 2014, I ran 31,875 km and still running Marathon races all over the world and happily diabetes free. Running didn t come to me easily; in fact I had to go through three surgeries in a row in 2000, 2001, and 2002 to fix my inner physical weaknesses. These surgeries were not due to running but needed just to run. In addition, I had to deal with numerous other health issues just to run! Just to avoid monotony of running and challenging myself on another front, I made a daring effort to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, without any training in August It was a struggle but survived the challenge because of the marathon fitness. On August 17, 8:08, I was at the summit, 5895 meter! Running marathon races made me a different person; the person who doesn t look back, the person who developed extreme confidence, and the person who thinks and acts always with a positive outlook. Now, my focus is on climbing Mount Everest! Well, I did all these outside the ordinary activities while raising a family; wife and two boys. Of course, my top priority was my job as nuclear power and materials expert and raising boys properly both in terms of education and moral characters. The struggles brought the best from each of us!! This is a story of an ordinary person, someone who strove ceaselessly to prove that he is different. Based on internet search, I am among 10 individuals (out of 7 billion people) who have completed the Seven Continent Marathon and successfully climbed one of the peaks of seven continents. Adding Mount Everest would probably make me especially unique in this world!! I am so much more than a number. Yet the struggle continues. Life does not dwell in yesterday, but rather urges us on. I will seek and strive to find until my last day on earth! At that point, I will proudly proclaim, that I Refused to be a number.
