1 Bethpage State Park Red Course Wednesday, July 27, 2016 Now in its 13 th year, this annual golf event, hosted by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), is named in memory one of the nation s leading public interest law figures, Michael Rothenberg, who served as Executive Director of NYLPI from Proceeds from the outing support NYLPI s efforts to provide low-income communities with increased access to legal assistance. Outing activities include a 9-Hole morning tournament, and an 18-Hole tournament with contests for Hole-in-One, Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, and Putting. For those individuals who have always wanted to learn the game or improve their technique, there will be a Beginner s Clinic led by a Bethpage golf pro that will run the length of the afternoon tournament. Both the traditional 18-Hole tournament and the 9-Hole morning tournament are played as a modified scramble on Bethpage s Red Course, which NYLPI provides exclusive access to for the day. 18-Hole Tournament participants also have access to the Red Course in the morning for early bird play. Participants in the Beginner s Clinic will have the opportunity to play holes on Bethpage s Yellow Course. Registration includes tickets for the driving range, greens fees, golf carts, scoring, brunch, cocktail reception, and gift bags. Bethpage s Red Course was designed by famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast also responsible for the world renowned Bethpage Black Course, site of the U.S. Open in 2002 and The Red Course features long par 4s, dogleg holes, and one of the most difficult starting holes in the country. NYLPI pioneered the practice of community lawyering in the five boroughs of New York City. Our interdisciplinary teams of advocates use every tool available community organizing, litigation, policy advocacy, media, and pro bono partnerships to solve seemingly intractable problems, develop leaders, and build collective power to achieve justice and equality. NYLPI s full-time staff of 30 includes lawyers, community organizers, legal advocates, development professionals, and administrators. The staff possesses a wide variety of skills and types of expertise and takes pride in our multi-disciplinary culture. Ten leaders of the City bar, with Cyrus Vance as Chair, founded NYLPI in 1976 with a vision of encouraging pro bono service for individuals and communities in need. NYLPI has evolved beyond pro bono alone into a force for social justice partnering with community groups, advocacy organizations, and the private bar to create lasting change. In the past five years alone, NYLPI advocates have represented thousands of individuals and won campaigns improving the lives of millions of New Yorkers. Our work with community partners has led to landmark victories including deinstitutionalization for people with mental illness; access to medical care and government services for those with limited English proficiency; increased physical accessibility of New York City public hospitals for people with disabilities; cleanup of toxins in public schools; and equitable distribution of environmental burdens.

8 REAL LIVES, REAL IMPACT 2015 AT A GLANCE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF IMMIGRANT NEW YORKERS WITH DISABILITIES will have equal access to public transportation in New York City. Under the groundbreaking settlement of NYLPI s lawsuit with co-counsel Jenner & Block against the NYC Transit Authority (now awaiting court approval), Limited English Proficient New Yorkers will be free from discrimination based on the language(s) they speak and will receive interpretation and translation services as the law requires. THOUSANDS OF SERIOUSLY ILL IMMIGRANT NEW YORKERS will receive vital healthcare. With the support of the New York City Council, NYLPI and its partners will expand groundbreaking immigration legal services that connect eligible people with life-saving healthcare they could not otherwise access or afford, strengthening families and saving millions in public health costs. MORE THAN 2 MILLION PARENTS AND NYC SCHOOLCHILDREN now have the right to know when harmful toxins exist in their public schools. NYLPI s advocacy and strong coalition led to a new City law that will ensure that parents and community members have easy access to vital information they need to protect their children s health. It requires the City to notify parents within 7 days of any test results that exceed health standards and to post all test results on its website. GROUNDBREAKING NEW YORK CITY LAW requires the Department of Education to report compliance with mandated physical education. Research proves that physical education improves children s health, focus and academic performance, but New York City schools fail to meet state requirements. This law, a direct result of our PhysEd4All campaign, requires an annual, public assessment of each school s program that will increase accountability and foster change. 11,520 COMMUNITY MEMBERS trained and empowered to organize for positive change. Through NYLPI s unique model of advocacy, we partner with them to develop leaders and build collective power to self-advocate and achieve their own vision of justice and equality. 18,600 PRO BONO HOURS donated by our member firms and legal departments. Our Pro Bono Clearinghouse strengthened the capacity of more than 430 nonprofit groups serving over one million people in need throughout New York City.
