2 The New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to 65,000 low-income New Yorkers each year more than half of whom are immigrants. This year s Gala will celebrate the many ways in which NYLAG is providing New York s diverse immigrant communities with civil justice. Our legal staff of more than 200 paid professionals speak over 20 languages. Working together with 800 pro bono attorneys, students and other volunteers, this team of advocates uses their skills, experience and cultural competency to improve the lives of clients by: Filing for asylum on behalf of people persecuted for their beliefs or sexual orientation Helping individuals realize their dreams of U.S. citizenship Preventing wrongful deportations and educating the community about the dangers of immigration fraud Representing victims of domestic violence to ensure safe outcomes for them and their children Securing employment authorizations and protecting workers rights Ensuring fair access to benefits like Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security Disability, food stamps, and public assistance Preventing evictions and foreclosures Helping children with special needs receive appropriate education and care Advocating on behalf of consumers summoned to court by debt collectors Addressing the needs of vulnerable immigrant populations, including the elderly, Holocaust survivors, disaster victims, the seriously ill and the disabled.

3 Honoring Matthew Biben Recipient of the 2014 Corporate Leadership Award Matt Biben is a Managing Director and Senior Legal Adviser to. He serves as the General Counsel for Chase Consumer & Community Banking, which includes s Private Wealth Management, Card and Merchant Services, Auto Finance, Consumer Banking, Business Banking, and Mortgage Banking businesses. Biben supervises a team of approximately 600 attorneys and professionals and serves on the Executive Committee of Chase Consumer & Community Banking. Biben joined from Next Jump, Inc., a technology company, where he served as the company s Chief Administrative Officer, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Prior to that, Biben served as Executive Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation for almost seven years. Biben spent the first 12 years of his career in government, serving in the U.S. Attorney s Office for the Southern District of New York, where he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in its Criminal Division and received the Attorney General s Director Award for superior performance. Prior to that, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney s Office. He argued numerous appeals in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and was lead counsel in more than 25 federal and state trials. Biben has served as Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School for more than 18 years, and has taught seminars in legal philosophy, federal crime and corporate law and governance. Biben is on the Board of New York Legal Assistance Group and has served on the Executive Committee for New York Lawyers for the Public Interest since He also serves as a Trustee on the Cornell University Board of Trustees. Biben received a BS from Cornell University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He lives in New York City with his wife and their three children.
