2 WHY CONGLOMERATES THRIVE Professor J Ramachandran, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore J. Ramachandran is Professor of Strategy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. His research focuses on the growth and governance challenges of business groups, multinational corporations and creative firms. His work has been published in the Harvard Business Review, Strategic Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Advances in International Management, Best Paper Proceedings of the Academy of Management USA, IIMB Management Review, Vikalpa and Economic and Political Weekly. Professor Ramachandran is the first Bain Fellow in India. Other recognition for his work includes: the IMD FDC Award for Best Paper in Strategy / IB Theory from the Academy of Management USA; the Tata Steel-IIMB award for best case on corporate social responsibility; best case awards from the European Foundation for Management Development [EFMD], Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia [AMDISA], The Central and East European Management Development Association [CEEMAN], and Association of Indian Management Schools [AIMS] as well as best teacher awards at IIM Bangalore. A qualified Chartered and Cost Accountant, and a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Professor Ramachandran has been a Visiting Professor at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, USA; and the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, USA. He has also served Indian Institute of Management Bangalore as a member of the Board of Governors. INNOVATION IN THE NEW WORLD ORDER: TWO FACES OF FAMILY BUSINESS GROUPS Associate Professor Ishtiaq Pasha Mahmood, NUS Business School Ishtiaq Pasha Mahmood is Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy at NUS Business School. Pasha s research covers the interface between corporate strategy and international business and is driven by his fundamental curiosity regarding why some firms continue to prosper while others stagnate. The other main strand of his research focuses on how firms respond to major environmental shocks. Pasha won the Haynes Prize from the Academy of International Business (AIB) for the most prominent scholar in international business under the age of 40. Page 2 of 5

3 He also sits on the editorial boards of Strategic Management Journal, and the Journal of International Business Studies. Diversified business groups such as Samsung in Korea, Tata in India or Formosa in Taiwan are an integral part of the corporate landscape that intrigues Pasha.Pasha s recent research interests include frugal innovation and Islamic business. Prior to his doctoral raining, Pasha worked as a management consultant in Chicago and Boston. Pasha obtained his B.A. in Economics from Oberlin College and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. About the panelists and moderator: PANEL DISCUSSION Mr Chavalit Frederick Tsao, Chairman of IMC Pan Asia Alliance and President of Family Business Network (FBN) Asia Chavalit Frederick Tsao is the fourth generation to start his maritime career when he joined his family business at twenty years old. He ventured out on his own whilst serving IMC Group of companies, which roots can be traced to He started several companies, listed and then delisted two companies, and turned around a bankrupt Thai national shipping line successfully. At 37, he took over the helm from his father, Tan Sri Frank Tsao. Under his stewardship, he restructured the traditional shipping company into a global enterprise with diverse business interests in more than 15 countries. Today, IMC Pan Asia Alliance (IMC PAA) has interests in four strategic business areas: 1. IMC Industrial, an integrated industrial supply chain group which covers resources, ports, logistics, shipping, industrial estate, offshore engineering and constructions, offshore services, ship management, shipyards and other services; 2. Octave Living, a sustainable living lifestyle and real estate group; 3. Heritas Capital Management, an investment and fund management group; and 4. East West, the philanthropic and social impact branch of the business promoting harmonious society and the positive role business plays. Mr Tsao believes that the current practice of capitalism has not fully reflected the intent of Adam Smith, said to be father of modern capitalism, and that enlightened self interest is the core (or central) to healthy development of Capitalism. 4 Mr Tsao has served on numerous Maritime and non-profit organizations. Notably, he served for 7 years as Chairman of Intercargo, an international dry cargo shipping organization and created a number of platforms to promote collaboration within the Maritime industry, with regulators and related non-profit organizations. He remains an Executive Committee Member of Intercargo. Mr Tsao is a Board Member of Family Business Network International and Family Business Foundation. He founded Family Business Network Asia, a regional chapter of Family Business Network International to promote sustainable family business. He believes that family business can make a difference to the evolution of business in the new role of business in society. Mr Tsao graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Science in Engineering (Industrial and Operations Engineering) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering). Mr Hiren Gandhi, Jt. Managing Director of Express Group Hiren Gandhi is the Jt. Managing Director, Express Group of Hotels, hospitality division of the Group. He is active in this role since last 16 years. Mr. Gandhi obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Business from Michigan State University, USA in On completion of this he joined the family business. During his engagement he had the opportunity to oversee group hotel project, from design to construction to final stage at a strategic location in India. Mr. Gandhi joined the prestigious Post Graduate program in Family Managed Business at S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai, India and completed the same in Summer of The Express Group of hotels have won several awards including Energy Conservation Award and Environment Champion Award from various leading trade associations in India. In 2004 Mr. Gandhi took charge of bakery division of Express Group which has expanded and diversified into wider product range and locations. The Bakery brand Muffins is fast becoming a household name in Western India. Mr. Gandhi has actively participated in conferences and programs on important industry platforms with a special focus on family business and entrepreneurship. He founded the Young Indians Chapter of CII in Vadodara, India and is also the founding member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO) of Gujarat Chapter, India. Mr. Gandhi belongs to the third generation of a reputed family business group known as Express Group. The Group has several business verticals including Global Logistics, material handling equipment, engineering, hospitality and packaged food business. The Express Group was founded by Late Mr. R.C. Gandhi in From a humble beginning, the group was accorded stronger foundation by the 3 brothers of the second generation. This joint family business, currently governed and managed by 7 cousins, of third generation, demonstrates a role model for any joint family business. Dr Marleen Dieleman, NUS Business School Marleen Dieleman is Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations (CGIO) at NUS Business School in Singapore. She holds a Ph.D. from Leiden University and a master degree in business administration from Rotterdam School of Management, both in The Netherlands. Marleen teaches corporate strategy and her research interests are in Asian family businesses -in particular in Indonesia- and in the governance of Asian firms. She has published widely on these topics, including articles in academic journals, books, book chapters, cases and reports. Her work is featured regularly in international media such as the Financial Times and she is a frequent invited speaker on governance in Asia.
