2 The SoCal Digital Symposium (SDS) serves as an exciting hub for Southern California s diverse group of tech entrepreneurs, scholars, visionaries, business leaders, developers, and power brokers. Every quarter, engaged professionals will be invited to take part in stimulating discussions on emerging trends, share innovative ideas in solutions-oriented cross-disciplinary conversations, and learn about new and relevant strategies, technologies, and techniques. SDS is the catalyst for the next wave of innovation in the region. The symposium convenes each quarter in Southern California s new digital frontier, rotating between Ventura, Los Angeles, and Orange counties. The upcoming event in Ventura County will be hosted at California State University Channel Islands (CSU Channel Islands). In addition to offering influential and thought provoking speakers, robust panel discussions, interactive showcases, and relevant networking opportunities, SDS goes further than other conferences by offering unparalleled access to inspiring speakers via intimate, limited seating breakout sessions where guests will be personally briefed on the latest tech issues and trends. This format allows for plenty of questions, meaningful dialogue, active brainstorming, and direct access to thought leaders and their peers. These interactive sessions facilitate and promote progress, forge creative alliances, and encourage potential collaborative ventures. Empowering tracks for the February 26 th event include: Social Business, Media Tech, Advanced Manufacturing & Nanotech, Wearable Electronics/ Active Lifestyle Tech, and Education. Through two sessions, these intimate 45-minute panel discussions, with no more than 20 participants per session, will brief attendees on the latest tech issues and trends from relevant thought leaders as well as provide direct access to speakers and their peers for meaningful dialog. The rebirth of the craftsman with technology as the conduit to personalized inhome manufacturing and connectivity with intelligent devices.

4 KEYNOTE SPEAKER Mike Panesis Chairman, Board of Governors Tech Coast Angeles Technology Management Program Manager UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering Mr. Panesis is an entrepreneur, angel investor and business executive with roots in information technology. He is Chairman of the Board of Governors of Tech Coast Angels (TCA), which is the largest accredited angel investor group in the country and one of the leading sources of funding to early-stage companies in Southern California. TCA has helped portfolio companies attract more than $1.4 billion in additional capital, however, the organization provides more than just capital. They also provide counsel, mentoring and access to an extensive network of potential investors, customers, strategic partners and management talent. TCA has more than 250 members, including its venture capital affiliates, in five networks in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Westlake/Santa Barbara and the Inland Empire. Mr. Panesis has had an impressive career in a diverse range of industries and roles, including executive management, tech start-ups, IT management and management consulting. His experience includes software engineering, operations, product management, and corporate and business development in industries ranging from software, automotive, financial services, information services, semiconductors, consumer goods and manufacturing. He has worked with companies such as Semtech, Whitestone Research, DealerTrack, Church & Dwight, Deloitte & Touche, and AT&T. Mr. Panesis also leads the UC Santa Barbara New Venture Competition (NVC). He develops mentor networks to advise students and find was to create and encourage innovation with the NVC that reflects best practices in the start-up community. Mr. Panesis has an MBA in Marketing from Rutgers University and a BS in Computer Science for Business from the DeVry Institute of Technology. He lives in Camarillo with his wife and two children. He is on the Board of the MIT Enterprise Forum Central Coast Chapter and Steering Committee of the Ventura County Greek Festival.

5 SPEAKERS Brent Bushnell CEO Two Bit Circus Track 1 - Technology in Education: The impact of virtual learning on children, global education, and gamification of information as a teaching strategy. Mr. Bushnell is the CEO of Two Bit Circus, a Los Angeles-based make tank focused on products at the crossroads of amusement and education. The interdisciplinary team strives to make entertainment more enriching and education more fun. Most recently the team launched STEAM Carnival, a modern re-imagining of the midway to inspire kids about science, technology, engineering, art and math. Steve Gill Partner, Gills Onions Previously he was the on-camera inventor for the ABC TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. He was a founder of Syyn Labs, a creative collective combining art and engineering to create high engagement for large brands and bands including Google, Disney and responsible for the viral hit Rube Goldberg music video for OK Go that garnered 40 million views on YouTube. In his spare time, Brent mentors teens in game development and entrepreneurship via programs such as Spark and NFTE. He publishes at brentbushnell.com Track 2 - Socially Conscious Business: Technologies that enable sustainable, environmental, community integrated, and financially viable solutions for existing and emerging business. Steve Gill is a fifth generation California farmer and onion processor who has been in the business for most of his life. Together with his brother David, Steve is the owner-partner of Gills Onions, one of the largest fresh-cut onion operations in the nation, processing up to a million pounds of onions daily, and delivering peeled, diced or sliced onions to industrial customers, grocery stores, and restaurants across the country. In conjunction with sister company Rio Farms, the Gill brothers manage nearly 20,000 acres of farmland and 300,000 square feet of processing and warehouse facilities in California. The farming operation has grown steadily over the years, and it is currently listed among the Top 10 growers in the West. He is also an entrepreneur who is leading the way toward a low-carbon future. In 2009, the company began using its onion waste to generate electricity at its

Technology as a link between online space and physical reality. Merrill Whatley Founder & President MW Multimedia Design and Development Rao Machiraju Co-Founder & CEO requall, Inc. Merrill Whatley is the Founder & President of MW Multimedia Design and Development. The company is a web application development, web design, multimedia development and marketing agency based in Ventura, CA. MW Multimedia specializes in finding ways to engage and grow an audience. Track 4 - Wearable Electronics/Active Lifestyle Tech: Technology as a transformer of everyday items into connected products that predict and anticipate uses and needs. The impact of these emerging devices on behavior, particularly in the areas of fitness, lifestyle, and environment. Rao Machiraju is the co-founder and CEO of requail, Inc. an MIT Media Lab spinoff as well as a NASA Research Partner. The company has developed a voice-enabled memory aid that seamlessly integrates a person s mobile phone, , text messaging and IM into a powerful organizer, reminder system and productivity assistant. He has taught in universities and was a Principal Scientist at Apple Computer for over ten years, heading various groups including the Learning Lab, one of Apple s three research labs. He holds six patents in computing. Mr. Machiraju has worked on a number of research and development efforts in information retrieval and organizational memory. In 1996, the term location sense was coined by him to refer to a capability of a device that can ascertain its location. He is a member of Board of Councilors of NSF s Center on Multi-Media Computing (IMSC) at the University of Southern California and serves on the Advisory Board of the Edward De Bono World Centre for New Thinking based in Malta. Mr. Machiraju has an interdisciplinary educational background in public health (MPH from California State University at Northridge), general systems and information networks (Certificate from United Nations Institute for Research and Training, University of Stockholm and UCLA), and instructional technology (Doctorate from University of Southern California).

7 Joseph M. Klocko Director Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) Regional Director Advanced Manufacturing Sector Track 5-3D Printing & Advanced Manufacturing: Technology as a medium to create unique, high quality specialized hardware. The rebirth of the craftsman with technology as the conduit to personalized inhome manufacturing and connectivity with intelligent devices. Over the course of his career, Mr. Klocko s experience has included executive positions at privately-held and Fortune 200 companies and has covered the disciplines of general management, operations, manufacturing, information systems, business development, strategic planning and finance. He has had responsibility for facilities in North America, the Asia/Pacific, the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Currently, Mr. Klocko is the Director, Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) hosted by College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA. In this position, he also serves as the Regional Director, Advanced Manufacturing for the California Community College s Economic and Workforce Development program. The center delivers training and education in the areas of Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining. The CACT also evaluates emerging manufacturing and engineering technologies to assist companies in deploying these technologies within their organizations to enhance their competitive position in a global economy. Prior to joining the college, Joe held the position of President and COO of Tactair Fluid Controls, Inc., a privately held aerospace and defense manufacturer. He has also held senior management positions at Textron Inc. and AlliedSignal Inc. (now Honeywell) where he served a worldwide customer base including tier one and tier two aerospace and industrial original equipment manufacturers as well as U.S. and international airlines and defense organizations. Mr. Klocko holds a B.S. degree in Commerce and Finance from Wilkes University, a MBA in Finance from Loyola College and has completed the Global Leadership Forum at the University of Pennsylvania s Wharton School of Business. He has attended numerous training programs in the areas of Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and is a certified Six Sigma Green Belt. Additionally, Mr. Klocko serves the community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Valley Industry Association (VIA) and the VIA Education Foundation. He is a member of the College of the Canyons Foundation Board of Directors having served as past-chairman of the Board.

8 EVENT HOSTS CSU Channel Islands Business & Technology Partnership The California State University Channel Islands Business & Technology Partnership (B&TP) is housed in the Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics. Its membership is comprised largely of community leaders, business executives and professionals. The B&TP's core values: foster the collaboration of technology and related service based companies with CSU Channel Islands and promote technological excellence among its students, faculty, and staff for the benefit of the region's economy. The B&TP partnership benefits community members, University faculty and staff, and in particular, students through an exchange of information and resources, networking, and relationship investments. CSU Channel Islands Business Advisory Council CSU Channel Islands Business & Advisory Council is a voluntary resource group of the Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics. It is comprised of both private and public sector leaders from the region and undergraduate and graduate students of the MVS School. The Business & Advisory Council s Speaker Series has included a variety of prominent local and national speakers who have made presentations or have been interviewed on stage. The primary purpose of the Speaker Series is to provide information and insights to the University s students and to the community.
