4 ASA CONFERENCE 2014 SPEAKER PROFILES SEÁN FARRELL Seán Farrell is the current President of the ASA. He graduated from UCD with a BAgrSc in He started his career as regional development officer with the IFA before joining ACCBank as regional agri-business manager in He was appointed national agriculture manager with ACCBank in 2010 and moved to his current position as head of agriculture with Bank of Ireland in He also runs a suckler beef enterprise on the family farm at Lanesborough, Co Longford. JUERGEN VOEGELE Juergen Voegele was appointed senior director of agricultural global practice with the World Bank in July Since joining the Bank in 1991, he has held a range of senior positions including director of agriculture and environmental services and sector manager for agriculture in the Bank s Europe and Central Asia region. He also worked in Beijing as a specialist in agriculture and rural development. A German national, he holds a PhD in agricultural economics from the University of Hohenheim. He is a Master of agricultural engineering in crop production, economics and forestry extension and holds a post-graduate degree in phytomedicine. MARK FERGUSON Professor Mark Ferguson was appointed director general of Science Foundation Ireland in January 2012 and as chief scientific adviser to the Government in October Previously, he was professor in life sciences at the University of Manchester and co-founder, chief executive and chairman of biotechnology company Renovo. He holds degrees in dentistry and medical sciences and a PhD in anatomy and embryology from Queens University Belfast. He holds fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Ireland and Edinburgh. The author of over 300 research papers, he was made a CBE by the Queen in 1999 for services to health and life sciences. LARRY MURRIN Larry Murrin is chief executive of Dawn Farm Foods, the leading B2B cooked and fermented meat ingredients company in Europe. Part of the Queally Agri-Foods Group, it runs two plants in Naas and TMI Foods in Northampton, supplying some of the world s leading food service and food manufacturing brands. Larry is an active contributor to industry and government on policy and strategy initiatives. He was a member of the Food Harvest 2020 group and served as chairman of Food and Drink Industry Ireland for 12 years. A member of the board of IBEC, he will become IBEC president in September FRANK O MARA Frank O Mara is director of research in Teagasc. He previously worked as assistant director and acting director of agricultural research with Teagasc. A graduate in agricultural science, he started his career as a technical sales representative with Charles R Wynne Ltd. After two years, he joined Teagasc Moorepark as a research scientist and was awarded a PhD by UCD. He lectured in UCD for 13 years and was appointed Associate Professor of Animal Nutrition. He joined Teagasc in 2006 and took up his current role in Frank served as President of the ASA in 2009/10. JULIAN LITTLE Julian Little is communications and government affairs manager with Bayer CropScience. Based in Cambridge, he is also chair of the Agricultural Biotechnology Council representing the ag-biotech industry in the UK and is a member of the communication group at EuropaBio in Brussels. He worked previously as a plant biochemist with Rhone- Poulenc in both the UK and France and in research project management with Aventis CropScience. Julian holds a PhD in molecular plant pathology from the University of Wales. PAT O KEEFFE Pat O Keeffe is deputy editor and news editor of the Irish Farmers Journal. From a dairy and beef farm in east Cork, he graduated from UCD with a BAgrSc in 1996 and completed a joint UCD-New Zealand Masters in Animal Science in He then joined the staff of the Farmers Journal. Pat is a former chairman and secretary of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists of Ireland and is a board member and current treasurer of Agri Aware. He served as ASA President in 2010/11 and is a current member of the ASA Council. THOMAS TRIMBLE Dubliner Thomas Trimble is head of the strategic business unit in Almarai, the world s largest integrated dairy business which produces over 1 billion litres of milk a year from 75,000 cows in the Saudi Arabian desert. Milk yields are around 14,000 litres/cow. Growth of Almarai s diversified food business has averaged more than 20%/annum during the past decade. The company has bought large tillage operations in Argentina, Poland and Ukraine and has recently established an infant nutrition plant in Saudi. DAMIEN O REILLY Damien O Reilly is presenter of the popular RTÉ radio programme Countrywide, which has a listenership of 225,000 each Saturday morning. He has worked with RTÉ for the past 16 years presenting a range of farming, food and sports programmes as well as the highprofile Liveline. He is a former chairman of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists and is current secretary of the European Network of Agricultural Journalists. Dublinborn but with strong Cavan farming roots, Damien started his radio career with the regional radio station Shannonside Northern Sound.

5 JIM KINSELLA Jim Kinsella is senior lecturer and head of agribusiness and rural development in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science. He lectures on sustainable agriculture and rural development, communications, agricultural extension and social farming. He also coordinates the post-graduate programme in agricultural innovation support which is delivered in conjunction with Teagasc. Jim started his career as a humanitarian worker in Ethiopia and Somalia and as an agricultural development officer in Tanzania and Kenya. He holds a PhD on farm household decision making from UCD. He lives with his family on a 30ha farm in Kilkenny. TOM KELLY Tom Kelly is director of knowledge transfer in Teagasc with responsibility for leading the organisation s agricultural education and farm advisory services. He has held a range of specialist advisory and management positions in Teagasc over the last three decades. He holds BAgrSc, MAgrSc and PhD degrees from UCD and also completed a corporate MBA at the University of Limerick. He is the inaugural president of the newly-formed EUFRAS (European Forum for Agricultural and Rural Advisory Services). From a farming background in south Kilkenny, Tom lives in Tipperary where his wife Ann runs a beef and tillage farm. BREIAN CARROLL Breian Carroll is managing director of Carroll Consultancy, based in Swinford, Co Mayo. He has almost 20 years experience in providing the full range of consultancy services to farmers, legal and engineering companies, local authorities and agribusiness. He holds a BAgrSc from UCD, a certificate in auctioneering and estate agency from AIT and recently completed a diploma in strategy and innovation at the IMI. He became the youngest president of the Agricultural Consultants Association (ACA) in 2007 and served as general secretary of ACA from 2010 to EDDIE DOWNEY Eddie Downey took up office as the 14th president of the Irish Farmers Association in January He sits on the boards of An Bord Bia, FBD plc and is a member of the Agricultural Trust, which publishes the Irish Farmers Journal and The Irish Field. He is a former member of the Teagasc board. At European level, he is a member of the COPA Praesidium, the representative body for European farmers and was recently elected chairman of the COPA working group on the food chain. Eddie runs a livestock, poultry and tillage farm with his wife Mary at Slane, Co Meath. MATT O KEEFFE Matt O Keeffe is editor of the Irish Farmers Monthly and is agricultural correspondent with Kilkenny/ Carlow radio (KCLR96FM). He also runs an intensive dairy farm in partnership with his brother and nephew at Clara, Co Kilkenny. He has a long track record of involvement in educational and farming organisations at local and national level. He is a former president of Macra na Feirme, former chairman of the Farm Apprenticeship Board and former deputy chairman of the IFA National Dairy Committee. SIOBHÁN TALBOT Siobhán Talbot is managing director of Glanbia plc, the leading global performance nutrition and ingredients group with revenues of 3.3bn and 5,200 employees across 32 countries. She joined the group as an accountant in 1982 and was appointed to the Glanbia Group operating executive in In 2009, she was appointed group finance director and joined the Glanbia board. She was appointed managing director in November Siobhán graduated with a BComm from UCD in 1984 and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. Prior to joining Glanbia, she worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Ireland and Sydney, Australia. IAN KEHOE Ian Kehoe is an award winning journalist, author and broadcaster. As assistant editor and business editor of The Sunday Business Post newspaper, he has been named Business & Economic Journalist of the Year for the past two years at the National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) awards. A former presenter and reporter with RTE s Prime Time programme, he has made a number of major television documentaries including Who s Buying Ireland, Namaland and The Indebted. He is the co-author of Citizen Quinn, a bestselling book on the financial collapse of the businessman Seán Quinn. JERRY O CALLAGHAN Jerry O Callaghan is director of investor relations with Sao Paulo based JBS, the world s largest meat company with annual sales of 33bn and a workforce of 185,000 across five continents. He joined JBS in With more than 30 years experience, primarily in the Brazilian beef sector, he has vast knowledge of global beef and the barriers to trade. He has also lived in India, the US, Paraguay and the UK. A native of Cork, Jerry qualified as an engineer from UCC. He moved to Brazil in He also owns and runs a cattle ranch in central Brazil. NIALL BROWNE Niall Browne is chief executive of Dawn Meats, the Grannagh, Co Waterford based company with processing and packing facilities in Ireland, Britain and France and sales and marketing offices across Europe. The company signed a 300m five year contract with McDonalds in Niall graduated from the University of Limerick with a degree in business studies in He then joined the Dawn Meats young manager programme, working in production, procurement, processing and management in five of the company s plants in Ireland and Britain. He was appointed chief executive in May MATT DEMPSEY Matt Dempsey is chairman of the Agricultural Trust, publisher of the Irish Farmers Journal and The Irish Field, and is former editor and chief executive of the Irish Farmers Journal. A graduate in agricultural science from UCD, Matt runs an intensive beef and tillage farm in Kildare. He is chairman of the Irish National Stud, president of the RDS, a member of the board of the National Gallery of Ireland and a former president of the Irish Grassland Association. He has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by UCD and Harper Adams University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the agri-food sector.
