BIOGRAPHIES Dr. Phillippe Aghion - Professor of Economics, Harvard University. Dr. Philippe Aghion is the Robert C. Waggoner Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He focuses much of his research on the relationship between economic growth and policy, as well as contract theory. With Peter Howitt, he developed the so- called Schumpeterian Paradigm, and extended the paradigm in several directions; much of the resulting work is summarized in his joint book with Howitt entitled "Endogenous Growth Theory". In addition to his academic research, Dr. Aghion has been associated with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) since He has been a non- residential Senior Fellow at Bruegel, a Brussels- based think tank, since September 2006, coordinating their research on higher education. Dr. Aghion is also managing editor of the journal The Economics of Transition, which he launched in He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. Dr. Amar Bhattacharya Director of the Secretariat, G- 24. Dr. Amar Bhattacharya is Director of the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty- Four on International Monetary Affairs and Development. The purpose of the group is to coordinate the position of developing countries on monetary and development issues, particularly issues on the agendas of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) and the Development Committee (DC), and to ensure increased representation and participation of developing countries in negotiations on the reform of the international monetary system. Prior to taking up his current position, Mr. Bhattacharya had a long- standing career in the World Bank. In his last position, he was advisor to the President and Senior Management on the Bank's engagement

2 with key international groupings and institutions including the IMF, G7, G20, OECD and Financial Stability Forum. He has been largely concerned with issues of global governance and reform of the international financial, as well as aid architecture. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. Dr. Uri Dadush Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Dr. Uri Dadush is a senior associate in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace s International Economics Program. He focuses on trends in the global economy and is currently also tracking developments in the Eurozone crisis. Dr. Dadush is interested in the impact of the rise of developing countries for financial flows, trade, and migration, and the associated economic policy and governance questions. Before joining Carnegie, Dr. Dadush served as the World Bank s director of international trade and director of economic policy. He also served concurrently as the director of the bank s world economy group, leading the preparation of the World Bank s flagship reports on the international economy for over eleven years. Prior to the World Bank, he was president and CEO of the Economist Intelligence Unit and Business International, part of the Economist Group ( ); group vice president, international, for Data Resources, Inc. ( ), now Global Insight; and a consultant with McKinsey and Company in Europe. He has published over a dozen Carnegie papers and policy briefs, as well as numerous journal articles. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University Dr. Kemal Dervis - Vice President and Director of the Global Economy and Development at the Brookings Institution. Dr. Kemal Dervis has been a Vice President and Director of Global Economy & Development at The Brookings Institution since His research focuses on global economics, emerging markets, development and international institutions. Prior to joining the Brookings, Dr. Dervis held a position of an Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Prior to his appointment with UNDP, Mr. Derviş was a member of the Turkish Parliament representing Istanbul from 2002 to 2005, after he had been Minister for Economic Affairs and the Treasury from During his time as a parliamentarian he represented the Turkish Parliament in the Constitutional Convention on the Future of Europe. From Mr. Dervis held various positions at the World Bank including Vice- President for the Middle East and North Africa Region and Vice- President for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management. Dr. Dervis has published many articles in academic journals, as well as current affairs publications on topics ranging from mathematical models of growth and social mobility and quantitative models of trade, to European enlargement and transatlantic relations. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. 2

3 Dr. Shanta Devarajan Chief Economist, MENA, World Bank. Dr. Shanta Devarajan is the Chief Economist of the World Bank s Middle East and North Africa Region. Since joining the World Bank in 1991, he has been a Principal Economist and Research Manager for Public Economics in the Development Research Group, and the Chief Economist of the Human Development Network, South Asia, and the Africa Region. He was the director of the World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People. Before 1991, he was on the faculty of Harvard University s Kennedy School of Government. The author or co- author of over 100 publications, Dr. Devarajan s research covers public economics, trade policy, natural resources and the environment, and general equilibrium modeling of developing countries. Dr. Devarajan holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Steven N. Durlauf Professor of Economics, University of Wisconsin. Dr. Steven N. Durlauf is Vilas Research Professor and Kenneth J. Arrow Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For two years, he served as Program Director for the Economics Program of the Santa Fe Institute. Dr. Durlauf has worked extensively on theoretical and econometric issues involving the analysis of inequality, social determinants of behavior, economic growth and policy evaluation. He was general editor of the most recent edition of the New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and co- edited the Handbook of Economic Growth. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University Dr. Francisco Ferreira Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief Economist for Africa Region, World Bank. Dr. Francisco Ferreira is the Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief Economist for the Africa Region at the World Bank and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn). He was formerly a lead economist in the Bank s Research Department, and has also served as Deputy Chief Economist for Latin America and the Caribbean, and as co- Director of the World Development Report 2006, on Equity and Development. Dr. Ferreira has published widely in the fields of poverty and inequality in developing countries. He is currently the editor- in- chief of the Journal of Economic Inequality, and also serves on the editorial boards of the Review of Income and Wealth, the World Bank Economic Review and the Economic Analysis Review. He has taught at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and at the Paris School of Economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics. 3

4 Dr. James E. Foster - Institute for International Economic Policy. Dr. James E. Foster is Professor of Economics and International Affairs at The George Washington University, and Director of the Institute for International Economic Policy in the Elliott School of International Affairs. Professor Foster's research focuses on welfare economics using economic tools to evaluate and enhance the wellbeing of people. His joint 1984 Econometrica paper is one of the most cited papers on poverty; it introduced the FGT Index, which has been used in thousands of studies and was the basis for targeting the Progresa/Oportunidades program in México. Other research includes work on economic inequality with Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen; on poverty and inclusive growth with Miguel Szekely, Former Undersecretary of Education in México; on multidimensional poverty with Sabina Alkire, Director of Oxford's Poverty and Human Development Initiative; and on literacy with Kaushik Basu, Chief Economist of the World Bank. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University. Dr. Simon Johnson Professor of Entrepreneurship, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Simon Johnson is the Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is also a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, D.C., a co- founder of BaselineScenario.com (a much cited website on the global economy), a member of the Congressional Budget Office's Panel of Economic Advisers, and a member of the FDIC s Systemic Resolution Advisory Committee. Professor Johnson is a weekly contributor to NYT.com's Economix, is a regular Bloomberg columnist, has a monthly article with Project Syndicate that runs in publications around the world, and has published opinion pieces in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The New Republic, BusinessWeek, and The Financial Times, among other places. Professor Johnson is the co- author, with James Kwak, of 13 Bankers: The Wall Street Takeover and The Next Financial Meltdown, a bestselling assessment of the dangers now posed by the US financial sector (published March 2010) and White House Burning: The Founding Fathers, Our National Debt and Why it Matters to You (April 2012). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT. Dr. Homi Kharas Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution. Dr. Homi Kharas is a senior fellow and deputy director of the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution. Formerly a chief economist in the East Asia and Pacific Region of the World Bank, Dr. Kharas currently studies policies and trends influencing developing countries, including aid to poor countries, the emergence of a middle class, the food crisis and global governance and the G20. His most recent co- authored books are Getting to Scale: How to Bring Development Solutions to Millions of Poor People (Brookings Press, 2013); After the Spring: Economic Transitions in the Arab World (Oxford University Press, 2012); and Catalyzing Development: A New Vision for Aid (Brookings Press, 2011). He has published articles, book chapters and opinion pieces on global development policy, global 4

5 trends, the global food crisis, international organizations, the G20, the DAC and private philanthropy. Dr. Kharas is also co- author of Penang s Cities, People and Economy (2011); An East Asian Renaissance: Ideas for Economic Growth (2007); and co- editor of East Asian Visions: Perspectives on Economic Development (2007). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University Dr. Danny Leipziger - Managing Director, The Growth Dialogue and Professor of International Business, The George Washington University, School of Business, Washington D.C. Dr. Leipziger is former Vice President of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network ( ) at the World Bank. Over the course of his 28- year career at the World Bank, he has held management positions in the East Asia Region and the Latin America and Caribbean Region as well as in the World Bank Institute. Prior to joining the Bank, Dr. Leipziger served in senior positions at the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of State. He has also been a Vice Chair of the independent Commission on Growth and Development ( ). He has published widely on topics of development economics and finance, industrial policy, and banking, including books on Korea, Chile, and East Asia and recent volumes on Globalization and Growth (with Michael Spence) and Stuck in the Middle (with Antonio Estache) and the most recent Ascent after Decline: Re- growing Global Economies after the Great Recession (with Otaviano Canuto). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Brown University. Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati Chief Operating Office and Managing Director, World Bank. Dr. Indrawati is the Chief Operating Office and Managing Director of the World Bank. In this position, she is responsible for the institution s operations in all regions and networks covering the thematic areas of human development; sustainable development; poverty reduction and economic management; and financial and private sector development. In addition, she oversees other administrative vice presidencies and functions, including the Integrity Vice Presidency, Sanctions Board Secretariat and the Office of Evaluation and Suspension She has received numerous honors and awards, including Euromoney Magazine s Global Finance Minister of the Year, and Emerging Markets Best Finance Minister in Asia. She has also been regularly on Forbes List of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the world. Dr. Indrawati holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois. Dr. Dani Rodrik Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Dani Rodrik is the Albert O. Hirschman Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He has published widely in international economics and globalization, economic growth and development, and political economy. Dr. Rodrik's articles have been published in the American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Economic Growth, Journal of 5

6 International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, and other academic journals. His most recent book The Globalization Paradox was published by Norton in 2011 and has been translated into twelve languages. He is also the author of One Economics, Many Recipes: Globalization, Institutions, and Economic Growth (Princeton 2007) and of The New Global Economy and Developing Countries: Making Openness Work (Overseas Development Council, Washington DC, 1999). Dr. Rodrik holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. Mr. Hans Timmer Chief Economist, ECA, World Bank. Hans Timmer is the Chief Economist of the World Bank's Europe and Central Asia region. Prior to this, he was Director of the Development Prospects Group at The World Bank. He is a quantitative international macroeconomist and econometrician with 15 years of management experience leading teams of modelers, forecasters, and policy analysts. His experience ranges from long- term structural analyses of the economic impact of environmental policies, trade policies and tax reforms, to short- term monitoring of the business cycle and analysis of monetary and fiscal policies. Before joining the Bank in 1996, he was Manager of International Economic Analysis, among other positions, at the Central Planning Bureau of The Netherlands. He holds a Masters degree in econometrics from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and has also studied at the University of Lodz in Poland. Dr. David Weil Professor of Economics, Brown University. Dr. David Weil is a Professor of Economics at Brown University. In addition to his role as a professor, Dr. Weil has been a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research since He has written widely on various aspects of economic growth, including the empirical determinants of income differences among countries, the accumulation of physical capital, international technology transfer, and population growth. He has also written on assorted topics in demographic economics including population aging, Social Security, the gender wage gap, retirement, and the relation between demographics and house prices. His current work examines how differences in health contribute to income gaps among countries. He recently published an undergraduate textbook on economic growth. His current research projects examine the role of health in explaining differences between countries in the level of income per capita and the macroeconomic effects of demographic change. Dr. Weil holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. Dr. Shahid Yusuf Chief Economist, The Growth Dialogue, The George Washington University, School of Business, Washington D.C. Prior to joining the Growth Dialogue, Dr. Yusuf had a 35- year tenure at the World Bank. He led the World Bank- Japan project on East Asia s Future Economy and was Director of the World Development Report 1999/2000, Entering the 21st Century. Previously, he was Economic Adviser to the Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, Lead Economist for the East Africa Department and Lead Economist for the China and Mongolia 6

7 Department. Dr. Yusuf has written extensively on development issues, with a special focus on East Asia and has also published widely in various academic journals. He has authored or edited 27 books on industrial and urban development, innovation systems and tertiary education. Among his most recent books, co- authored with Kaoru Nabeshima, are: Development Economics through the Decades Tiger Economies under Threat; Two Dragonheads: Contrasting development paths for Beijing and Shanghai; Changing the Industrial Geography in Asia: The Impact of China and India; and Some Small Countries Do It Better: Rapid Growth and its Causes in Singapore, Finland and Ireland. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. 7
