4 2018 AG FORUM SPEAKER BIOS Greg Vogel Land Advisors Organization Founder and CEO Since founding Land Advisors in 1987, Greg has applied his unique knowledge in the areas of land economics, land use and market trends to become a trusted advisor and broker to a broad spectrum of clients including financial institutions, investors, home builders and master-planned community developers. As Chief Executive Officer of Land Advisors Organization, Greg has led the expansion of the company into 22 markets across the United States. Over the past 30 years he has been involved in hundreds of transactions, including several of the highest valued land transactions in the country. He has developed an extreme level of expertise in large scale community development and the representation of large land owners in unique structured transactions. Greg focuses his philanthropy and civic involvement on Arizona State University (ASU). He is a trustee of the ASU Foundation, a board member for ASU Realty Company and ASU Enterprise Partners, and a member of the ASU Real Estate Council. Greg earned a bachelor s degree in real estate from the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University in He is a past trustee and governor of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), and past chair of the ULI Community Development Council (BlueFlight). 5 Mark Manfredo ASU Morrison School of Agribusiness Associate Dean, Professor and Director Mark Manfredo is a professor and director of the Morrison School of Agribusiness at the W. P. Carey School of Business. His research focuses on commodity price analysis and agribusiness risk management, with particular emphasis on futures and options markets and price forecasting. His work has appeared in leading applied economics and agribusiness journals including the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Applied Financial Economics, Energy Economics, Agribusiness: An International Journal, and Agricultural Finance Review as well leading business journals such as the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, Journal of Supply Chain Management, and Journal of Business Logistics. Manfredo served as the co-chairman of the NCCC-134 Conference on Applied Commodity Price Analysis, Forecasting, and Market Risk Management ( ), and is currently a member of the editorial review board at Agribusiness: An International Journal. At Arizona State University, he teaches courses in futures and options markets and agribusiness finance at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has also served as a faculty honors advisor for Barrett, The Honors College. In 2007, he received ASU s Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching/ Instruction Excellence by the Office of the Provost, and was also presented with the Western Agricultural Economics Association Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award that same year. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance. He has a PhD from the University of Illinois, an MS degree from New Mexico State University and a BS from California State University. ASU W. P. 6 Sapna Gupta ASU Morrison Institute for Public Policy, Phoenix, Arizona Senior Policy Analyst Sapna Gupta is a Senior Policy Analyst at the Morrison Institute for Public Policy. She has expertise in the areas of economic development, trade, education and workforce development. She also conducts research on competitiveness and bi-national economic development. She edited the April 2016 Arizona Town Hall background report on Mexico and is the primary author of On the Rise - 21st Century Career and Technical Education Pathways, a comprehensive analysis of career and technical education in Arizona. She has contributed to Arizona Directions 2013 and 2014 and other Morrison Institute white papers. Sapna regularly presents research findings to civic organizations and industry groups. She has appeared on Arizona PBS s Horizon, Arizona Public Media s Arizona Week and on KJZZ radio and has been quoted in print and online news publications. Prior to joining Morrison Institute, Sapna consulted and conducted research for civic organizations, non-profits and universities. She structured financings for public entities as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan and was an economist and consultant at the World Bank s West Africa Infrastructure Division. Sapna began her career as an analyst at ICF International, a consulting firm in Washington D.C. She has been a member of the ASU Art Museum s Creative Impact Board since She graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School with a master s degree in public policy and earned her bachelor s degree in public policy studies from the University of Chicago. 7 Tony Tew Foothill Packing, Inc. President/General Manager Tony Tew is the President and General Manager at Foothill Packing, Inc., a contract labor and custom harvest company based out of Yuma, Arizona. Tony has been with Foothill Packing for the past 15 years, growing its business to a workforce that ranges from 1,800 to as many as 2,200 employees in the peak vegetable season. That includes some 1,200 H2A workers. During the summer season, he oversees 750 employees that primarily serve the melon industry. Tony has been in agriculture for over 40 years, having grown up working in the fields through high school and attending junior college. He entered the industry as an intern with Northrup King Seed and became area manager. He then served as general manager for a Japanese company, Sakata Seed, and opened their first U.S. Seed Production Branch in Yuma, AZ. Tony moved on into the contract labor and custom harvest business, where he served local growers. Through the next 25 years, Tony, while working with local growers and shippers as a laborer contractor, saw a need for a private seed production company. He opened Priority Seed Production, which requires a large labor force that can perform the necessary operations related to the vegetable seed industry. Tony is currently involved in several other agriculture businesses in the Yuma area, including Priority Pollination, and 3T s, LLC.. Tony works with the local college, speaking to agriculture majors on the ag industry, giving them guidance and explaining the different areas of opportunity that the industry offers. 8 Jay Whetten 76 Ranch Owner Jay Whetten is the owner of the 76 Ranch, near Bonita and current president of the Arizona Cattle Growers. He studied Agricultural Economics at the University of Arizona and has run cow-calf operations on both sides of the Mexican border since Mr. Whetten is a tireless proponent of ranching and has long served the industry through advocacy and public outreach.
