Voice 2012 Microphones: Choosing the Right Mic for the Job Christopher Currier Product Specialist Studio Systems Voice of Sennheiser/Neumann USA
Quick housekeeping Sennheiser & Neumann one big happy German family since 1991! About me o Product Specialist for Studio Sennheiser o In charge of the entire Neumann line as well as all of Sennheiser s studio products. o Been with the company for 8 years o Voiceover o Since I was a kid game shows, radio, tv commercials o 2008/9: Took lessons with Joan Baker in NYC; became the voice of Sennheiser/Neumann USA and got an agent. Follow me on Twitter (@Curriervo), Facebook (facebook.com/curriervo) and my website (curriervo.com) o and then please make sure your phones are off or silenced 4 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
What are we going to cover? A quick agenda... #1: I promise this will not be a 90-minute Sennheiser/Neumann sales pitch! Mic Mechanics & Terminology o Boring (but important) terminology o What you need to understand about microphone specs o Types of microphones Mic Selection o Tools and advice to help you make the right choice Tips, tricks, demos and q&a For detailed tech tips that go beyond the microphone, go to Dan Lenard and George Whittam s Audio Processing session at 10:30 tomorrow. 5 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Voice 2012 Mic Mechanics 6 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Mechanics Some basic terminology... What is a microphone anyway? o A microphone is a transducer. Which means it converts acoustical energy (sound) to electrical energy. o Easy way to think of it: the exact opposite of what a speaker does! Why do I need to know about all of this? o TIP: Your voice is only half of the equation. You should understand and be as comfortable with a microphone as you are with your own voice! 7 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Mechanics Some basic terminology... Frequency o Literal definition: the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. o Stay with me now. Hertz (Hz) o A unit of measurement of frequency specifically the number of cycles per second o Lowest note on piano = 28 vibrations per second or 28 Hz! o Middle C is 261 Hz o khz = 1000 Hz o High C is 4186 Hz or approx 4.2 khz o Fun fact! The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency from 85 to 180 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. 8 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Mechanics Some basic terminology... Last but not least the decibel (db) o Literal definition: a ratio between two logarithmic levels. o What.? o In sound it can refer to differences in sound pressure. o Fun (aka audio nerd) facts o Humans can detect differences of 1 db. o A difference of 6 db is perceived to be twice as loud. o Named for the inventor of the telephone! 9 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Mechanics Some basic terminology... Weakest sound heard 0dB Whisper Quiet Library at 6' 30dB Normal conversation at 3' 60-65dB 65dB Telephone dial tone 80dB City Traffic (inside car) 85dB Train whistle at 500', Truck Traffic 90dB Jackhammer at 50' 95dB Subway train at 200' 95dB Level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss 90-95dB Hand Drill 98dB Power mower at 3' 107dB Snowmobile, Motorcycle 100dB Power saw at 3' 110dB Sandblasting, Loud Rock Concert 115dB Pain begins 125dB Pneumatic riveter at 4' 125dB Even short term exposure can cause permanent damage - Loudest recommended exposure WITH 140dB hearing protection Jet engine at 100' 140dB 12 Gauge Shotgun Blast 165dB Death of hearing tissue 180dB Loudest sound possible 194dB 10 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Types Dynamic Condenser Ribbon Digital 11 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Dynamic Microphone Diaphragm Voice coil Magnet Works like a loudspeaker in reverse No power supply needed Moderately sensitive mics (condensers are more sensitive) Higher sensitivity means less pre-amp gain needed (which may result in less noise) When demoing a mic the mic with the higher sensitivity will sound louder 12 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Dynamic Microphone (Cont.) Diaphragm Voice coil Magnet 13 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Condenser Microphone Diaphragm Electronics Provide voltage to the diaphragm Amplifies the signal Needs power supply (either phantom power or with tube mic s external supply) Sensitivity is 10-20x greater than dynamic mic Known for having a greater frequency range (20 Hz to 20 khz); capturing full spectrum of human hearing! Who invented the first commercial Condenser mic? 14 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Condenser Microphone (Cont.) Diaphragm Voltage on backplate 15 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012

Mic Selection (aka the end of the boring stuff) 22 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Selection Tools to help you make an informed decision Research, research, research o All major mic manufacturers have a website o check out our Mic Finder! o o Most major mic manufacturers have dealers (retail locations) o Forums (gearslutz), magazine reviews (Recording, Electronic Musician, Mix, etc), Youtube!! o Pick up the phone and CALL the manufacturer! o Bottom line You have to try these mics out to find the right one for you! You may THINK you want a Sennheiser 416 or a Neumann U 87 but the truth is, it might not be the right match! 23 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Microphone Selection Tools to help you make an informed decision Issuing a challenge! o Before you leave Voice 2012, make at least one new friend that has a mic that you don t. Then arrange a time to get together and geek out over microphones! When testing mics, remember o The louder mic almost always sounds better. Check volume levels before getting too excited. o Trust your ears to a point. Then ask for a second (or third) opinion. o Microphones are like paint brushes. Odds are that you ll have an all-purpose brush, a brush for detailed work, a brush for broad strokes, etc. 24 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
So wait what do I need? Your voice (take good care of it!) At least one GOOD microphone At least one GOOD pair of headphones (rec. HD 280 / HD 380) A quiet space to record o Note 1: Condenser mics are VERY sensitive. Reduce background noise! o Note 2: You do NOT need to spend thousands of dollars to have a perfect studio right out of the gate! Your studio will grow as your career grows. A way to get the microphone into your computer o Personal recommendations for getting started... o Apogee Duet, Alesis io dock, Centrance Mic Port Pro into Audacity or Garage Band o As you get better and start to define YOUR sound - a good, quality mic pre TRUE Systems, Grace, etc. o As you get even better, a good full studio setup 25 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Tips, tricks & live demos 26 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
A few additional words The best pieces of advice I ve ever received o Practice every day If you seriously want to do this for a living, then you should be doing it EVERY day. o From Joe Cipriano (and I m paraphrasing). Don t quit your day job BUT if you can find a day job that gets you into a parallel industry, it will help! o From Me - Unless you have been doing this for a long time, don t judge your own work. o From Debra Byrd (American Idol voice coach) Olbas just might save your life okay, maybe not but they might save an audition or a paying gig! 27 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Demos! and some more sound advice Need a volunteer to come up and assist! o Mic Demo! o Proximity Effect 28 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
Demos! and some more sound advice P-popping (plosives) and Harsh S Sounds (sibilance) o Tip # 1: Don t back away. It can actually make it worse! o Tip # 2: Whenever possible, try the 15-degree trick FIRST! o Tip # 3: On the road without a pop filter does not equal up a creek without a paddle! Grab a pen or a pencil! o Tip # 4: Popper-stoppers, pop filters, etc., although COOL, are not always your friend and should not be your first solution. They WILL change the sound of your voice. There is no such thing as an acoustically transparent pop filter. o If you must use one, buy from the manufacturer of the microphone whenever possible (same with windscreens, etc). OR make your own (all you need is a coathanger and pantyhose). 29 Voice 2012 Microphones 13 June 2012
