3 INTRODUCTION Welcome to yet another book on how to play the harmonica. This time we are concentrating on the wonderful Mr Sonnyboy Williamson the second - also known as Alex Rice Miller. What we ve done here is to explore the style of Sonnyboy s playing and create a series of riffs based on the way he played. They are not exact replicas and they are not from specific songs but you will recognise the similarity as you listen to Sonnyboy himself. To give you the feel, style, and sense of these riffs Paul has written and played guitar parts to give you a more contemporary setting. We are continually indebted to Joe Filisko for his encouragement, mentoring and his insights into Sonnyboy s playing and also the low C harmonica I m playing on this recording; including his secret modification to allow me to play it in my mouth without using hands! If you don t have a low C you can play these riffs on a normal C - but do yourself a favour and get the low C. You ll thank yourself. Ben mostly uses Hohner Marine Bands by Richard Sleigh and Joe Filisko retuned for this recording by Jon Vaughan in bristol, UK. Paul uses Hofner & Fender guitars, AER amplification and Native Instruments effects. TECHNIQUES & ARTICULATION Sonnyboy s default single note playing is an unusual form of tongue blocking; he starts with the tongue covering the comb - say on holes 1 to 4. Them he pulls the tongue back so you hear all the notes in a chord. Finally he moves the tongue to the left and plants it down on holes 1 to 3 and what you hear is hole 4. Have a go at it, I think it sounds great! He uses tongue blocking all the time as far as I can tell except when playing chords. On the lower holes he switches the tongue to the right. I don t think he puckers at all - what do you think? His chords are superb. All the tone and texture he gets into them add to the rhythm and I think they sound crisp, deep, fruity and fuzzy all at the same time. His chord technique is based on something we explore in great length in our first book Get Chugging. The trick is to whisper crazy words loudly into the harmonica to produce the texture and rhythms. Do you remember I would like a chicken tikka from Get Chugging? A classic for you to check out. So Sonnyboy uses the words written with the riffs to articulate the sound and get the textural nuances. I m sure he didn t think of it in these terms - he didn t like fattening frogs for snakes - but we feel it is the best way to show you what he s actually doing. Phrases like doodle oodle oodle dah sound great when you whisper them into holes 1, 2 and 3 on your trusty tin sandwich. Also his throat vibrato is unusual. It s very fast, like his singing vibrato. It s done deep in the throat and I demonstrate it for you on the recording. Another vibrato is using his right hand. He holds the harp in the left hand and flaps his right hand open and closed to create it. I ll demonstrate it on the recording and you ll hear it when you listen to Sonnyboy. 6
