3 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my family for their support for this project. They pushed and encouraged me to get this project done. I would also like to thank my uncle for helping me troubleshoot my project when I was having problems. I also would like to thank Professor Russo for guidance on my project. He helped me figure out how some parts worked and what I should hook up. Mr. Don Peters for making two boards. The first board I had made was wrong so he was able to make the second for me with the corrections in timely manner. Mr. Jeff Lipscomb helped with the dip tracing program. I was able to use the program with no issues. Mr. Kensi for helping me troubleshoot as I couldn t get my project to work after soldering it together.

4 Abstract The project I decided to build was a bass amp with a booster. The bass amp just amplifies the sound of the bass instrument. The booster is used to the boost the sound of the bass amp. The bass amp is an electromagnetic or electronic component that boosts an electric current. I chose to use this amp as an inverting amplifier. Meaning that it is connected with feedback to produce a closed loop operation. When dealing with operational amplifiers there are one important rules to remember about inverting amplifiers. No current flows into the input terminal. The closed loop amplifier uses negative feedback to accurately control the overall gain of the amplifier. The bass booster circuit is build and fabricated around a npn transistor and operational amplifier. It is divided into two major sections: One section is to bypass higher frequencies and another section is booster section. The input signal from the preamplifier circuit is given to input point of the bass booster where higher frequencies will pass through a capacitor and lower frequencies through a resistor. The operational amplifier is used to boost the lower frequencies. The variable resistor is used to control the boosting level. It is used to amplify the sound of the bass.

5 Introduction This project came about after long thinking process. I wanted to build something that was doable but also something I would use and enjoy. I started playing bass for about 2 and half years on and off. I already have a bass amplifier but I thought it would be real cool and great to build my own. Learning how a bass amplifier worked was very interesting and I learned a lot from it. I had no idea how much work and effort was needed to put in this project. I wanted to do more than just have sound come out of a speaker. So I figured it would be a good idea to add a booster to the bass amplifier. I also wanted to do other stuff like a volume knob, a LED light, and maybe an equalizer. Didn t have to time to do everything so I did what I could. I didn t want to anything big as far as the amplifier so I kept it small.

6 Principles of Design Key facts that took my idea and made it possible to plan for a working project were the determination to get the job done and consulting with the technicians to make sure my ideas were able to be done. There were times where I thought this project wouldn t be able to happen. The circuit I had chosen to use for this project was missing the name of the IC used in it. I researched countless hours before finding an IC that would work for this circuit. I did consult with my professor and technicians to make sure that this IC would work with this circuit. I used two different circuits and combined them into one circuit. Not knowing if it would work, I consulted with the technicians and they gave me the ok to use both circuits.

8 Construction For the construction of this project, I dipped trace the schematic of the circuit. Once that was done, the dip trace software shrink and rearranged the circuit to where it would fit on the PC board. I soldered all the components to the PC board except the two variable resistors. I soldered wires on the board and soldered the wires to variable resistors. For the enclosure, I took an old bass amp apart and I m using the old encasement as my enclosure. The speaker is already mounted inside and I will just lay the circuit inside of the encasement. I used to multisim to prototype it and made sure it works.

9 Testing To test my bass amp, I plugged my bass into the input socket of my amp. I connected the speakers from the trainer board inside the lab. Once I did that, I just strum my bass to see if I got any sound from the speakers. For the input, there was five clip holes I had to choose from. I know that one is for ground and the other is for input of the bass amplifier. To test the input for the bass, I put the bass cord input into the actual input clip. I took the ohm meter and connected it to the bass cord input in the clip and the other side of the ohm meter to one of the five clips to see which one would give me a reading. I also did not know that the speaker needed to be grounded so Professor Russo was the person to help with that issue.

10 Operation To work this project, insert the bass cord into your bass then into the input socket. Once that is done, you would plug up the bass amplifier since there isn t an on/off switch. Then you can turn your bass volume up and begin to play. To control how much boost you get from the booster, you would adjust the variable resistor attached to the circuit.

11 Conclusions My final product was what I expected. It is something I wanted to build and I really enjoy it. I learned how it works as far as the components and the operational amplifier I used. I had my first experiences with dip tracing and soldering a circuit. I wished I could have added more features to my bass amplifier like a volume knob or an equalizer but procrastination got the best of me. Despite the challenges I had with this project, I m glad I still picked it as my project to do.

12 Recommendations If I had to do it again, I would start early on every step. From ordering parts to testing out the circuit to see if it works. This needs to be done because anything could happen and just because the circuit is on the internet, doesn t mean that it is right. I would have also took my time looking at the different circuits for my project because all circuits are different in some way. Tips and wisdom I would give is not to procrastinate and start as early as possible. The sooner you can get done, the better. You need time to fix any issues that may come with your project. Pick a project that you would be interested and would enjoy. No point of building something you re not proud of.
