1 North American Viola Institute: June 2009 Scale Class Materials Enclosed please find scale and arpeggio fingerings (you may use these or your own), as well as selected scale routines. You may find it helpful to familiarize yourself with this material before you arrive at Orford. At the first scale class (each scale class will have 8 people), you will be asked to choose your priorities (you may select as few as 1 or as many as 5). Everyone will play each day. You may work on one of your priorities over the course of the week or choose a different one each day. Possible Goals: Knowledge of all major and melodic minor scales (4 per note) Knowledge of arpeggios in all keys (3 or 4 per note) Intonation Facility Rhythm Slurred Series Ease and consistency at tip (slurred and separate series) Detache I. The scale fingerings enclosed fall into the following four groups: (e, D-flat through F#) major scales, i.e., those starting on the e string (G, A-flat through B) major scales, i.e., those starting on the G string (c, c# through f#) melodic minor scales, i.e., those starting on the e string (g, a-flat through b) melodic minor scales, i.e., those starting on the G string II. Suggested metronome markings for the scale routines are: slurred series 4 beats per 1-6 notes slurred slurred series 2 beats per 4-12 slurred (24/bow, 3 bts per bow) Broad detache, 1-6 fast detache and sautille, 8-12 Scale Rythms III. The sequence of chords to include (together with fingerings) is listed. If you are unfamiliar with the note names of each chord, it would be helpful to write those out. e,d D-flat, E-flat E, F, F#, G A-flat, A, B-flat, B IV. Suggested metronome markings for the arpeggio routines 1 note/beat, 3 beats (4 beats for 7th 3 notes/2 beats (2 notes/beat for 7th chords), 2 3 notes/quarter note beat, in rhythms (8th followed by 2 16ths and 2 16ths followed by 8th); 4 notes/quarter note beat for 7th chords, in speed rhythms (dotted 8th followed by 3 32nds and 3 32nds followed by dotted 80, 100, 120, 3(4 for 7th chords) notes/beat, 9 notes/bow Heidi Castleman, Daniel Sweaney North American Viola Institute
