Analysis Of A Tune Based On The Changes To Solar Analysis The 1st step on our quest is to really understand Harmony, Form and Melody. I definitely recommend that you do check out the melody for the Standard Solar and analyze it against the chord progression. If you are ever in doubt of the functionality of a chord or a chord scale sometimes the answer is spelt out in the melody. For this lesson we will be analyzing the chord progression, figuring out the functionality of the chords, identifying the key changes and looking at the chord scales. A lot of Jazz Standards have a lot of common chord structures so we start to notice patterns in the bass or Root motion. It is very common for the root of the chords to move down in intervals of a perfect 5th. The Cycle Of 5ths will become a very important tool for us in practicing phrases and ideas in all keys. For this lesson I will briefly go over the chords that we can relate to the Major and Natural Minor Modes and see how they function within this progression. This progression based on the changes to the standard Solar is a 12 bar form.

In this progression we will be dealing with some chords that last half a measure in length (2 Beats) and a Minor II-7(b5) V7(b9) turnaround. We will be using Roman Numerals to indicate the functionality of the chord within the key throughout the progression. Just be aware there are 12 Keys and there are some Key Changes found within this progression. There are lessons available on the construction of Key Signatures and Modes in the Academy. Throughout the analysis of this progression we will come across some chords that can t be analyzed as a part of these Major Modes. As they appear we will discuss them. Let s now look at the 1st 6 bars of our progression. The first thing you should be looking at is the Root Motion so we can determine the key. This progression starts with a C-7. To decide what the functionality of this chord we need to look to see what comes next and what comes before. The next sequence of chords is a II V I which is strongly indicating the key of F Major. This would make the C-7 a IV-7 which doesn t seem right as it doesn t sound like a modal interchange chord in the key of F. It s really important to let your ears guide you. If we look at the turnaround at the end of the progression we will see a D-7(b5) to a G7(b9) leading us back to the top of the form. This is a Minor II-7(b5) V7(b9) movement resolving to a C-7 which is a strong sound and makes us hear the C-7 as a I chord.

It s really important that you learn how to hear the functionality of the chords as well as understanding them. After the C-7 can see the II-7 V7 Imaj7 in the key of F Major. The II chord has a strong pull to the V chord. There is a high level of tension in (V7) Dominant chords and you can really hear the resolution when you land on the Imaj7 Chord. This movement really tells our ears we have arrived at home. So in the first 6 bars we are in 2 keys. C Minor and F Major. I m analyzing these chords with Roman Numerals So now we understand the 1st 6 measures next we need to understand what the Chord Scale is for the C-7. The C-7 is a Modal Interchange chord so we have to think of it as a I-7 from a Minor Key. We can think of it as the I Chord from the Natural Minor Modes, which would be equivalent to the C Aeolian Chord Scale. We could also think of it as the I Chord from the Dorian Minor Modes, which would be the more common choice. This would make the Chord Scale C Dorian. Another choice would be thinking of the C-7 chord as just a C- and using the C Melodic Minor Chord Scale but for now we will just use the Dorian Scale. The next 3 Chords (bars 36) are just a II V I from the key of F Major G-7 C7 Fmaj7 all use notes from F Major (Ionian).

Bar from bar 7 to bar 9 the progression jumps again has a II-7 V7 Imaj7. It doesn t sound like the Key of F major as the sound is strongly pulling my ears to a new key Eb Major. We now know the connection and sound of a V7 chord moving down a perfect 5th to the maj7 is indicating a new key. Bar 7, 8 and 9 are in the key of Eb Major. The next 2 bars is again another II-7 V7 Imaj7 this time over 2 bars. Our Ears again are leading us to a new Key Db major.

In the 1st 11 bars we have changed key 4 times. However there is a lot of symmetry to the progression. Every time the chords resolve to a Major 7 the next chord has the same Root but switches to a Minor 7 Chord. The last bar is a Minor II-7 (b5) V7 (b9) which resolves and brings us back nicely to the top of the form. Here is Bar 12 which we have some different choices for Chord Scales. D-7(b5) The most common choice for the D-7(b5) is by thinking of it as a II-7(b5) from the C Natural Minor Modes. This would make the Chord Scale (C Aeolian) The 2nd choice is a little more complicated but would give us a nice tension natural 9 over the D-7(b5). This chord scale would now come from the F Melodic Minor Modes making the D-7(b5) the VI-7(b5) (6th mode of F Melodic Minor)

I will go for the 1st choice (C Aeolian) when I play though the melodic exercises but when improvising I always know and understand I have the F Melodic Minor as a color. Here are the 4 Note chords for the C Aeolian Modes Here are the chords from the Aeolian Modes with Romain Numerals I-7 C-7 II-7(b5) D-7(b5) biiimaj7 Ebmaj7 IV-7 F-7 V-7 G-7 bvi Abmaj7 bvii Bb7 The last Chord in this progression is the G7(b9) G7(b9) Over a Dominant 7 Chord we have so many options but the best option in this Minor II V senario is the Chord Scale built off the 5th degree of Harmonic Minor. The chord scale is called Spanish Phrygian. There are a few different names floating about like Phrygian Dominant which are all correct. I just always knew it as Spanish Phrygian Here is the C Harmonic Scale

If we build this scale using the same notes starting form the 5th degree we will find the 5th mode Spanish Phrygian. Here is the G Spanish Phrygian Mode When we analyze the Scale against the Chord G7 we can see it contains all the Chrd Tones G, B, D and F. It also contains the tensions b9 and b13 which give this Dominant Scale it s tension and character. Because we are using the tension b9 we also can add the #9 as an option if we decide to do so. Always when you have tension b9, #9 is the available choice. Here are the 4 Note chords from the C Harmonic Minor Modes Here are the chords from the Harmonic Minor Modes with Romain Numerals I-7 C-(maj7) II-7(b5) D-7(b5) biiimaj7(#5) Ebmaj7(#5) IV-7 F-7 V7 G-7 bvi Abmaj7 bvii Bo7 (Diminished)

Here is the full 12 bar progression based on the Miles Davis standard Solar Recap of available Chord Scales Bar 1-2 C Dorian Bar 3-6 F Major Bar 7-9 Eb Major Bar Db Major Bar 12 First 2 beats C Aeolian Bar 12 Last 2 beats C Harmonic Minor
