1 Flute scale syllabus (proposals: November 2014) ABRSM Woodwind Review All requirements are to be played from the lowest tonic/starting note, unless otherwise indicated. For major and minor scales, a choice of rhythm patterns is proposed: even notes or long tonic (see p. 7). Even notes are to be used for all other requirements. Minor scales are to be prepared as follows: Grades 1 & 2: natural or harmonic or melodic Grades 3 5: harmonic or melodic Grades 6 8: harmonic and melodic Examples are given on pp. 7 8 to clarify recurring patterns/ranges found in this syllabus. GRADE 1 scales: F, G majors; E minor 1 oct. arpeggios: tongued only Grade 1: Same three keys as in current syllabus (with additional option of natural minor). Tongued and slurred for scales (as in current syllabus) with tongued-only proposed for arpeggios, for greater ease navigating intervals. Top note: G. GRADE 2 C major*; A minor 1 oct. F, G majors; D minor a 12th * starting an octave above lowest tonic Grade 2: The to a 12th range is introduced (one grade earlier than in current syllabus) as a stepping-stone between 1 and 2 octaves. For arpeggios to a 12th, two patterns are proposed for consideration (see p. 7 NB the 6/8 pattern requires re-articulation when slurred). Top note: D by ABRSM Woodwind Review (Flute) 1
2 GRADE 3 Bb major; G minor a 12th D, Eb, F majors; D, E minors Chromatic scale starting on G 1 oct. tongued only Grade 3: First appearance of 2-octave requirements (one grade later than in current syllabus). Introduction of chromatic scale, as in current syllabus, but tongued only. Top note: F. GRADE 4 A, Bb majors; A, B minors a 12th C, E, G majors; C, G minors Chromatic scale starting on D Dominant seventh (resolving on tonic) in the key of G tongued only Grade 4: Introduction of dominant seventh, as in current syllabus, but tongued only. In line with recent changes to other ABRSM syllabuses, dominant sevenths now to resolve on tonic (rather than ending on dominant) to illustrate the harmonic context. 3 GRADE 5 D, Eb, E, Ab, A majors; C, E, F, F#, A minors Chromatic scales starting on C and F Dominant sevenths (resolving on tonic) in the keys of A and Bb Diminished seventh starting on F tongued only Grade 5: Introduction of diminished seventh, as in current syllabus, but tongued only. Top note: A. GRADE 6 Db, E, F, Bb majors; C#, E, F, Bb minors D major; D minor Chromatic scales starting on E and Bb starting on D Dominant sevenths (resolving on tonic) in the keys of A and Eb in the key of G Diminished sevenths starting on E and Bb starting on D Scale in thirds C major (starting an octave above lowest tonic) 1 oct. tongued only Grade 6: For scales and arpeggios, five major-minor pairs are proposed, from which three are employed as the starting notes for the chromatic scales, dominant and diminished sevenths i.e. a tonal centre approach. The stepping-stone range of 2½ octaves is proposed, for further exploration of the upper register. For arpeggios over 2½ octaves, two patterns are proposed for consideration (see p. 7 NB the 6/8 pattern requires rearticulation when slurred). Because of the reduction in the number of scales and arpeggios in this grade, a scale in thirds (1 octave, tongued only) is proposed as a further pattern. 4 GRADE 7 Eb, G, A, B majors; Eb, G, A, B minors Db major; C# minor Chromatic scales starting on G, A and B starting on C# Dominant sevenths (resolving on tonic) in the keys of C, D and E in the key of F# Diminished sevenths starting on G, A and B starting on C# Scales in thirds D, F majors Extended-range scale and arpeggio F major Grade 7: As in Grade 6, five tonal centres are proposed, from which four are employed as the starting notes for the chromatic scales, dominant and diminished sevenths. In compensation for the removal of the all-keys emphasis of the current Grade 7, a requirement new to the syllabus an extended-range scale and arpeggio () is added, for a wider exploration and consolidation of the instrument s compass. This is complemented by two examples of scales in thirds (now over 2 octaves). Top note: B by ABRSM Woodwind Review (Flute) 4
5 GRADE 8 F#, Ab, B majors; F#, G#, B minors Eb major; Eb minor C major; C minor Chromatic scales starting on F#, Ab and B starting on Eb starting on C Dominant sevenths (resolving on tonic) in the keys of B, Db and E in the key of Ab in the key of F Diminished sevenths starting on F#, Ab and B starting on Eb starting on C Scales in thirds E, G and A majors Extended-range scales and arpeggios G major and F harmonic minor Grade 8 requirements continue on p by ABRSM Woodwind Review (Flute) 5
6 GRADE 8 (cont.) Whole-tone scales starting on F starting on C Grade 8: As in Grades 6 and 7, five tonal centres are proposed, all of which are employed in this grade as the starting notes for the chromatic scales, dominant and diminished sevenths. Further exploration of the upper reaches of the instrument, including the first 3-octave requirements and further examples over 2½ octaves. All keys have now been covered at least once in Grades 6 8. In compensation for the removal of the all-keys requirement of the current Grade 8, two examples of whole-tone scales () are included, as in the current syllabus, alongside further examples of scales in thirds and extended-range scales and arpeggios.
