This is Clinton Power and welcome to episode 24 of The Ask Juliet & Clinton Show. I m here with my wonderful co-host Juliet Austin who s in Vancouver. Hello Juliet, how are you? Hi Clinton. I m doing really good. You re looking good today. Thank you. I m feeling pretty good, I m feeling pretty good. I m looking forward to this episode. We ve got lots more questions to get through. I can t believe we re on episode 24. We do, yes. I know. It just keeps happening, doesn t it? It keeps happening. It just seems like yesterday we were starting at episode zero. Amazing, amazing. Okay, let s get started. I m going to do a fact about Canada today. Clinton, have you ever heard of the spirit bear? No, I have not. What is the spirit bear, Juliet? The spirit bear is also called the Kermode bear and it is a subspecies of the North American black bear. It lives in the central and north coast regions of BC, of British Columbia, where I live. It is the official mammal of BC. There s only about 400 of them. It s actually a black bear but it has white fur so it s not a polar bear, it s a black bear that has white fur. It is very rare. It s only in those areas. I think there may be the odd one in another places in North America but basically that s where they are. This is interesting, I thought. Scientists have found that black bears are not as effective at catching fish as white bears as the white bears are less visible from the perspective of the fish. At night, the two colors have similar success at catching fish. Isn t that interesting? 1
2 The morale of the story is that if you re a white bear and you fish at night, you ll be more successful at it. They re interesting. They don t look as white as polar bears. Have you seen one in real life? Not in real life, no. I ve just seen them in pictures but they re an off white color. I remember when I was in BC the highlight for me was seeing a little black bear sitting in a tree eating salmon. That was just fantastic. It was so great. I m trying to remember, where were we when we saw that? Actually, I think it was in Alaska. It was on my Alaskan cruise. Oh it was in Alaska, okay. Alaska is in the north of BC. That was a hoot. I loved it. Did we see a bear when we were in BC? No. No. We went hiking and I m really glad we didn t see any bears. Why don t you kick us off with that first question today, Juliet? This is Mark from Lawrence, Kansas. Mark says, thanks for offering this podcast. I m learning a lot. I m trying to post on social media, Twitter and Facebook mostly, but I find it takes so much time to find information and to create my own post. I d like to post images but I don t have a clue how to do that and can t imagine finding the time to learn. Q1: Any advice you have on how to find the time to post to social media would be appreciated. Clinton, why don t you start with that? Oh boy, this is one of the biggest questions everyone has. In fact, our most popular podcast has been about how to find time to social media. I think it s something everyone deals with is on social media. I deal with it all the time. It s a massive challenge to find the time. A couple of quick things that I want to suggest that you can do around finding images to post is you don t have to One, you can find other people images and there s no shortage of that. Just head on over to Pinterest and oh my god, there s just unlimited images that you can use to post to your insights. 2
3 If you want to go a little bit more tricky, you can create your own images and we ve mentioned some really good tools you can do. Canva.com is a favorite of mine, picmonkey.com. Juliet, I think you just created a tutorial recently on how to use some of these tools as well, didn t you? Yeah, I actually wrote an article on my blog. We can put it in the show notes and then I did three video tutorials on Canva, PicMonkey and Pablo by Buffer because those are the three that I like. Actually, I m a PicMonkey, maybe it s because it s the first one I used, but I find it s a bit more intuitive than Canva, I think. I love Pablo. It s a more recent one from Buffer. We re actually using Pablo to create all our episode images on our website askjulietandclinton.com and you can see the image with the quoted question we ve chosen on top and it s really quick to do. It often takes less than a minute to do it. We ll put all the links to those in the show notes. Sometimes it s more about just creating a system or a process around it. If you re working with a virtual assistant or an assistant or maybe someone who can help you create images, you can choose the quotes, you can do them yourself or you can outsource it. It doesn t have to be a big expense or time suck as well. I think if you keep it simple, it s a great way to add more engagement to your social media as well. I guess I should say I don t do I do some of my social media but I also have somebody doing a lot of it for me which I m, of course, involved in and overseeing and approving. It s hard to keep up and be really in front of people all the time and do it yourself. It can be just too much time I think. You may have to consider hiring someone to do that and there are people out there that do that, virtual assistants and people like that who do that. VAs will be great with the research side of things so you can certainly ask them to research quotes, research topics in your niche and then you can review that and choose the ones you like the best and then you can create a system around creating images as well. One thing I just want to say when you said yes, there s a lot of images on Pinterest, when you said that, just to clarify for people who aren t familiar with images on Pinterest, you still have to source where they You have to site where they came from. You just can t take images and start using them. Same with images from Google, a lot of people think 3
4 they could just go look on the images in Google and download the images and start using them. All images have copyright depending on who s created them and violating copyright law on any visual image is the same as plagiarizing or copying anything in a print document. You need to make sure you have permission if you re using other people s images or site the source where the original image came from. That s really important. Good point, Juliet. We ll put a link to some free images libraries as well. There s a couple that we like to use so we ll put them in the show notes as well which will be askjulietandclinton.com/24. Let s move on to our next question which is from Jen who is a new psychotherapist from Portland, Oregon, a lovely part of the world. She says, I am new to private practice and have been told I should list my practice on psychology today. I m trying to write a copy from my profile but the word count is quite limited. Q2: What are some of the most important things I should mention in my listing to make sure I get the best results? I really like this question. This is a good question because I think all therapists, and potentially we ll say natural health businesses, it s really a worthwhile strategy to make sure you are listed on directories. There s a whole range of directories you can have free. There s free directories which certainly are going to be beneficial to list on right up to paid directories where you often get a much higher quality service such as Australia Counselling Directory which I run. Of course, Psychology Today is I think one of the biggest, if not the biggest in the United States, very popular in Canada as well. I do know with Psychology Today the word count is very limited. It will vary with different counselling directories but I know that you ve got to be really concise with Psychology Today. What I recommend is try to get very clear about who you re wanting to connect with and perhaps on a directory you may, even if you have a niche, sometimes it s a good strategy even just to target a little bit more broadly to market yourself more as a generalist. Some people like to do that just so they can have a bigger net when it comes to directories or if you have a niche, you can also choose just to get very clear about who your message is for. 4
5 I would start with speak to the core problems or issues your client or potential client is experiencing. Don t start with talking about your qualifications or your method or therapy. Then talk about how your approach can really help the person. That s really important to talk about the benefits and the potential outcomes or results that are possible from working with you. You might want to mention if you have a specific approach that can help with your credibility or maybe you have some specific result or research that makes your approach credible and then end with a strong call to action. Tell the person what you want them to do whether it s to call you, to book online, to visit your website. That s just a very brief summary of some of the important things I think about. What are your thoughts, Juliet? I agree with you there, Clinton. I would back up a bit here with this. You re saying somebody told you to be on there. Before you decide which directory you should be on, you should do what s called a blind search in Google to see which directories are coming up for your local area. If you re in North America, pretty much anywhere in North America, Canada or the US, Psychology Today will be ranking fairly high. If you re in British Columbia, counsellingbc.com competes with Psychology Today on many areas because it s not just the directory that s good. It depends on where it s ranking for your local area and it does rank in different places for different areas. It also would depend somewhat on the competition. I would start there and make sure that this is one that s coming up in your area. For Portland, I m sure it is, I can t remember, I m sure I ve checked that numerous times but I m sure it is there so keep that in mind. The other thing, Clinton you were saying list as a generalist. I find on directories most people are listing as generalists and there s no way to stand out. I think really making it specific if you have a niche can really, really help. You might think that ticking off all the areas is going to help you show up in search results for more times. Of course it is, but if they go and read your If it shows up in the search results within Psychology Today because somebody ticked off addictions counselling and all the addictions people who mentioned that show up, then they see your listing and it s general, it s not specific to addictions and they read a few more and then those are specific those addictions, they re probably going to go with those ones. 5
6 Lastly, and I think we talked about this before, is whatever you have on your website should match what you have on Psychology Today because most of those people or at least many of them are going to click through to your website if they re seriously interested in you. You ve said that you re into addiction on your profile then you go to your website and there s nothing there on addiction, the person is going, What? This is true for any kind of marketing. You need to have consistency as well. Fantastic. Great points, Juliet. Our final question is from Fabienne. Do you want to read what Fabienne says? She says, I was listening to your show when you talked about video marketing. I have a slide presentation that I did for a talk on how couples can improve communication. Q3: I was wondering how I might use it to promote my therapy practice. Could I turn it into a video? Should I use it on my website as it is and maybe on social media? If you could explain how I might use this that would be great. Clinton, why don t you start. She s wanting to know how she can take a slide presentation and promote it, is that right? I m not sure I fully understand the question. Yes. There s a number of ways you can go with this. One social media network which I really love and I think is incredibly underutilized is SlideShare and it s slideshare.net. I ve had some great results with SlideShare. Every time I ve done a presentation, a webinar, I upload to SlideShare and it s getting some really good views and traffic. A lot of people are looking on SlideShare for inspiration. They re looking for information. The great thing about SlideShare is that you can also take it and embed it in your own blog post. This is a way that you can give people access to your slides without sending them the PowerPoint or the key note presentation and the potential for them editing your intellectual property. It works on mobile. You can embed it in your blogpost. People can read it easily. They can also follow you on SlideShare. They can share your slides. Within your slide presentation, I really recommend you have a strong call to action to whether it s to sign up for your free offer or to visit your website or find out more about your services. You can have clickable links in your SlideShare as well. I would definitely check that one out as well. You can share it on social media as well. 6
7 In terms of turning into a video, absolutely. It s very simple. Just use screen videoing technology and we recommend either ScreenFlow for Mac or Camtasia which is available for PC or Mac. You can just have the slides in full screen and you press record and you just talk over the top of the slides as you advance them. It s very easy and you can upload it to YouTube or Vimeo or wherever you like. What are your thoughts, Juliet? Yeah, I think SlideShare is a really good option. The other thing that I would mention with that is make sure your presentation is well done and has good visuals. Don t just have a lot of bullet points all jumbled together on the page. If you want people to watch it, it s got to be interesting and it s got to have some visuals so keep that in mind if you re doing it. You could turn that slide presentation into a video, share it on social media. One thing that people sometimes don t realize is you can share stuff on social media for a long time. You can share it for a while, stop sharing it three months later, a month later share it again. Keep sharing your material. When you re creating content, it s really important to keep sharing it because not everybody has seen it so keep it out there and keep spreading it around. One little tip I want to add before we finish Juliet is to check out Haiku Deck. We ll put the link in the show notes. This is a fantastic tool. I just created a presentation. I m presenting at a mental health symposium shortly and I created my whole PowerPoint deck doing this. It s just beautiful. It was the easiest and more enjoyable experience of creating slide decks because I just dread PowerPoint. I just do not enjoy it. I find it very difficult and it s very clunky, but this was a joy. You can export it as PowerPoint or pdf and the slides look beautiful. It s really simple. It s all based in the Cloud. You don t have to download any software so check it out. It s a good tool.
