2 Mrs. Smart: Howdy, Vocabulators. We are in the spotlight now but in this lesson it will be your time to shine. Today you will use your vocabulary and comprehension smarts and Put it together to do a whole lesson by yourself. I will help you with a few words, then it is your turn to Put it Together. 8 Mrs. Smart: You are cooking now, Vocabulators. It is time to practice reading a passage and answering questions. Your questions today will be about the whole passage and include a conclusion question. You will also make a story summary. I know you can do it. 7

10 Mrs. Smart: Our story today is a fable.about a lion and a mouse. Evy: I wonder what lesson we will learn today from a lion and a mouse? I wonder what conclusion I will be able to make about the lion and the mouse? Mrs. Smart: You would be surprised Evy. Let s practice some of the words you will use in today s lesson. 11 Mrs. Smart: Here is the first part of our reading selection for today. The Lion and the Mouse. Before we read there are some words we need to know. I think we know the meanings of all the words, let s just read some of the words in red. The first word is SWALLOW. Say it with me. Swallow. Swallow has two meanings. Swallow like you do with your throat, and a kind of bird - a swallow. Today s story is talking about the kind of swallow with your mouth and throat. Text adapted (sentences shortened). Referents clarified. (lexile now 750). Length

12 Mrs. Smart. The next word is PARDON. Say it with me. Sometimes people say, pardon me, or excuse me. Have you ever heard someone say Pardon me? 11

13 Evy: Here is the next part of our reading selection for today. This word in red is GNAWED. Say it with me. Perhaps you know the meaning of the word. Gnawed means to chew. Like dogs like to gnaw on bones. What are some things that can be gnawed? Get ready, Vocabulators. It s YOUR TURN to practice these words. 12

17 Mrs. Smart: This time we will put all the questions together. Here are our five questions for our passages today. Vocabulators, read them to yourselves. (Wait a few seconds). Evy: Wow Mrs. Smart those are some tough questions. But, Vocabulators you are up for the challenge. TA Da. This time we will not highlight the important words..there are so many and I think the Vocabulators know the words. But you will practice putting them in your own words. Get ready, it s YOUR TURN. 16

18 Evy: Here is one of the questions. For every question you need to think what the question is asking you to do. So you need to. Put the question in my own words or you own vocabulary. 31 Mrs. Smart: It is your turn for Story SUMMARY. Evy will use a story chart to help us remember the parts of the story. Then you will put the story summary events in the correct sequence. 30

32 Evy: Ok, Vocabulators. I will retell this story in my acting voice, again Meee mmme meee. Meee. Mee. This story is a fable so I know it is about animals. The characters in this story were a lion and a mouse. This is the picture we have seen before. This story took place.. 31

33 Evy:.The passage doesn t really say where. It just says when the lion was sleeping. So we know it was about a lion and a mouse and the lion was asleep at first Then an important event took place. 32

34 Evy: The important event was the lion caught the mouse under his paw. Then another event happened the mouse begged the lion to let him go. 33

35 Evy: Then there was a big problem. The problem was that hunters caught the lion in a trap. 34

36 Evy: Little Mouse to the rescue!! The mouse solved the problem by gnawing or chewing the ropes that held the Lion - the king of the beasts. Let s try a new part. The conclusion The important thing I figured out was. 35

37 Evy: Even small friends can be helpful. This story was a fable so it has a lesson. I guess I never thought about friends like that before. I really like this story. Now, it s YOUR TURN.
