1 Patricia Kennedy, stated that her son Michael (Hutchence) was of Irish, English and Spanish descendants. The moment I was given the knowledge about Patricia s maiden name a little bell started ringing and then she talked about Michael being of partly Irish descendants and the gong rang immediately. I knew by instant he had to be related to the American presidential family from the 1960 s plus there would come a point in time when I would be able to proof this. Well then 2017, a decade after our reunion and first stage of merging: The modern surname Kennedy showed up for the first time in the first part of the 10th Century, 930 A.D. We will explain how this came to pass. Cennétig mac Lorcáin, King of Tuadmumu, died 951. He was the father of Brian Boru. Cennétig was king of the Dál gcais, one of the tribes of the Déisi, subject peoples in Munster. Their name was new, first recorded in the 930s, and they had previously been an undistinguished part of the NORTHERN Déisi. (Déisi = The Déisi were a class of peoples in ancient and medieval Ireland.) (1) The fact shown in the paragraph above that Cennétig mac Lorcáin's family name originates from the Northern Déisi, highly probable means that they were descendants from the Scottish Kennedy's who through intermarriage with Irish Nobility put their name on the Irish Genealogy Map. see Map 1 attached below - The Kennedy name in Ayrshire, Scotland, seems to have evolved from the family of Fergus, Lord of Galloway (south of Scotland). The Lords of Galloway were known formerly as de Carrick, with a lesser name being Kennedy (MacKenedi). Fergus could have had family links to Brian Boru, King of Ireland (the king that overthrew the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf, Near Dublin, in 1014). (2) Two Kennedy clans occupy the Emerald Isle: One is Irish and the other is Scots. The majority of the Kennedy's who settled in Northern Ireland are of Scottish origin from the territories of Galloway and Ayr - see attachment below - just across the Irish Sea
2 some 20 miles away. These Scottish Kennedy's intermarried with local Irish and thus they are Scots-Irish in blood. The other Kennedy family is located in southwest Ireland with its foundation in the bloodline of Cormac Cas, King of Thomond and Munster. Cormac Cas is the progenitor of the clan known as the Dal Cais or Dalcassians, translated to 'mean descendants of Cas.' They were a minor clan of Ireland and ruled the northern section of Munster Province known as Thomond. Two great families came from that Dalcassian Clan: The O Briens and the O Kennedy's. (3) Cinneide (Kennedy), King of Thomond, died in 954 A.D. He was succeeded by his son, who rose in power and gained the kingship of Munster see Map 2 attached below - obtained the allegiance of the other five provincial kings of Ireland, and eventually became High King of Ireland. Because he exacted tribute, his second name became Boru, meaning tribute. He is known as one of the greatest kings of Ireland. King Brian Boru decreed a law around 1000 that all families or clans should possess a surname and suggested that they should choose an illustrious ancestor after whom to name themselves. Due to his achievements, Brian s family chose to call themselves O Brien, descendants of Brian. One of his brothers was Donchuan, whose son was named after Donchuan s father. Donchuan's son Mahon was the first to call himself Ó Cinnéide which is Irish for grandson of Cinnéide. Cinneide and it is this line from which the Irish O Kennedy's and the American presidential Family descend. (3) The eponymous ancestor of the O'Kennedys was Kennedy, nephew of Brian Boru, or Cinneide in Irish, the resultant surname being O Cinneide (Brian Boru's father was Cinneide). They are thus a Dalcassian sept, and at first their territory was around Glenomra near - Killaloe, see attachment below - and their occupation is perpetuated by the name of the civil parish comprising that area, viz. Killokennedy. (4) Name Variations: Ceanneidigh, Ceannaideach,Cinneidigh, Cennedi, O'Cinneide, Cinneide, Cendetig, Cennetig, O'Cinnkide, Canady, Canedy, Canidy, Canaday, Minagh, Minnagh, MacUalraig, MacKenedy, McKennedy, M'Kenedy, Mac Ulric, Mac Walrick, Kennedy, O'Kennedy, Kennady, O'Kennedy, Kenedy, Kanady, Kannady, MacKennedy, MacKennedie, Canada, Canadey, Canady, Caneday, Canedy, Caniday, Cannada, Cannaday, Cannady, Canneday, Canniday, Cenedy, Cennidy, Ceniday, Chinneide, Kanada, Kanaday, Kanadey, Kinidy, Kannedy, Kenada, Kendy, Keneday, Kenerdy, Kennaday, Kennady, Kenidy, Kenndy, Kenneday, Kennerday, Kennidy. (4) The Kennedy family divided up into 3 branches and they were named after the haircolour of the chieftans: (5) 1. Don (brown) 2. Fionn (blonde) 3. Rua (red) (it strikes me as odd but absolutely non-coincidental that Michael had all three haircolours!)
3 Kennedy, Kenedy, Cannady, Chennedeigh and Cinneide and so many forms more. Several of the names are given in an 1851 census of the Limon of Kilworth in County Cork. The family name of the O Kennedy s is mentioned in the Piperoll of Cloyne, but is not numerous in modern times in the vicinity. The Ancient Topography of Fermoy see Map 3 attached below - gives Daire Hi Chennedeigh as a place name denoting the family of Kennedy. This family is also found in the Crichad an Chaoilli or the Topography of Ancient Fermoy residing in Hi Beci Abha and in Thuat O nduinnin. The name is also given in at least one instance in The Barony of Barrymore County Cork (6) The paragraph above states clearly that the name Cenneide/Chennedeigh/Kennedy is in some major records, in which we can still dig in. So it may be totally proven how Michael and his Kennedy-part of the family is in fact related to and descended from Cennétig mac Lorcáin, Brain Boru (O'Brien) and Donchuan's son Mahon Cenneide. Plus that the Cenneide's/Kennedy's originated from the Scottish Lowlands as stated and sourced in the beginning of this article. It seems all clear now but in fact we are only half way. Michael was born in Australia, so how did this part of the Kennedyfamily eventually turned to be Irish-Australians. Michael's Mother never mentioned inside information on that fact, so I had to dig in Irish-Australian immigration information. It took me a while to paste it all together, but I came to two options: The Irish Diaspora Irish settlers both voluntary and forced were crucial to the development of the Australian colonies from the earliest days of European settlement. The Irish first came over in large numbers (50,000 were transported between 1791 and 1867), to be used as free labour; even larger numbers of free settlers came during the 19th century, partly due to the Donegal Relief Fund. Irish immigrants accounted for onequarter of Australia's overseas-born population in (7) Or they must have immigrated to Australia during the Great Famine or the aftermath thereof, where in 1929 Michael's mother Patricia Kennedy was born by 1854, between 1.5 and 2 million Irish left their country due to evictions, starvation, and harsh living conditions. (8) Emigration during the famine years of was to England, Scotland, South Wales, North America, and Australia. (9) And last but not least I have to add a personal note to this all: The freaky part is that 8 years ago my sister, who is a renowned medium, said to me, you have an old man in a tartan following you around? Any idea who he is? And I asked her about the tartan and she described it, I have the note still somewhere to
4 back this up, but I never forgot what she said. Now I found out that this is - the tartan of the Clan of the Cinneidigh/Kennedy's see attachment below - And then I say "Now I ask you?" because I stopped 'doing coincidences' years ago and I never forgot the old man in that tartan. To make it even more 'fantastical,' without having any idea whatsoever I named Michael My Highlander from the moment we 'met' in 2007 (yeah I know the Kennedy's are from the Lowlands) and then finding a picture of him in a tartan! An Australian wearing a tartan, how odd was that, but now all pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place.
