5 Activity sheet 5 - Looking Deeper INTERREGNUM Interregnum is a word which describes a period of time when a country is without a ruler or monarch. In other words it is a time between reigns. They usually occur when either there is no direct heir or when the line of succession has ended and there is no monarch. Open the file Events and answer the following questions for each Interregnum. First Interregnum Question 2 In which year did it begin? Whose reign did it follow? Who became the next monarch? How long did the Interregnum last? Which country was affected? CIVIL WAR During the reign of Charles I the animosity between the British monarch and Parliament came to a head. Charles disagreed with Parliament and tried to arrest five of its Members. They had been warned and escaped. This angered Charles who decided a show of strength was necessary and assembled his army. Parliament also gathered an army under the command of Oliver Cromwell. The King was eventually arrested, put on trial and executed. In which year did this civil war begin? Question 2 What did Britain become in 1649? When was Oliver Cromwell made Lord Protector? Which monarch was exiled from the country during this time? For how long did Britain have no ruling monarch? 10
6 Activity sheet 6 - Wales and Ireland WALES In the 5th and 6th centuries, the Celts were driven from England and into Wales by the Anglo-Saxons. They formed small princedoms until the early 13th century when Wales became almost united under Llywelyn Fawr. However, after many English invasions, Wales was finally incorporated into England. Use the Events file to answer these questions. Which king invaded Wales in 1282? Question 2 Which Welsh prince led a rebellion in 1401? The Statute of Rhuddlan ended Welsh independence. When did this happen? Since 1301 it has become a tradition for the eldest son of the English monarch to become Prince of Wales. Use the Children file to answer the next two questions. Who was the first English Prince of Wales? Who is the present Prince of Wales? IRELAND English monarchs have ruled Ireland ever since Henry II s invasion. There were many Irish rebellions following this and English rule was restricted to The Pale, an area around Dublin. English Protestants settled in Northern Ireland in the 16th century and the Irish Catholics resented this Protestant domination. Use the Events file to answer these questions. Question 2 When did the Vikings settle in Ireland? When did Henry II invade Ireland? Who was defeated at the Battle of Boyne? When was the Act of Union between England and Ireland? In 1920 Ireland was divided into and 11

8 Activity Sheet 8 - Puzzles. Load a copy of Junior ViewPoint and open the file Monarchs. To find out the answers to these puzzles, go to the graph view.. More than half of the British monarchs married only once. Question 2. Many British monarchs have been born in Ireland.. British monarchs have been born in Norway, Holland and Denmark.. The next monarch is usually the natural heir. Now use the Deaths file to answer these questions: More monarchs were executed than died by accident. Fact Before the year 1000, Scottish kings chose their successor. Often, their choice was not popular. This sounds like a recipe for endless quarrels amongst those who wanted to be king. Question 6. Scottish monarchs before the year 1000 were usually murdered or killed in battle. 13
