Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 1 Who were the wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. PRIVATE RESEARCH DOCUMENT John Philip Ranck 17 March 2001 The evidence I have relating to the wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. is: 1. Some working papers of D. L. Thornbury, prior to his January 1939 publication (#4 below) identifies Elizabeth Kline as wife of Jacob Wink, Jr. and a sister Mary Kline, as wife of Elias Wink. 2. On the back of a letter from S. L. Wink to Samuel Winck, dated 27 Aug typewritten, (but not by the same typewriter used by Wink for the letter or the typewriter used by Thornbury for the extensive manuscript and not itself dated) -- a sketch titled THE DESCENDANTS OF JACOB WINK SR. AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH. This sketch includes in part: Jacob Wink Jr. ( ) Married Elizabeth Kline ( )" A canvas of all descendants is being made. The results will be printed in a small booklet about July 1, It will be years before a 2nd edition will be printed. Write a card to D. L. Thornbury, 209 Fifth Street, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania if you are interested and wish to have your account in the booklet. By the statement in the last paragraph, I take the author to have been Thornbury. This could have been typed either before or after Aug. 1937, but certainly well before July 1939 because he expects a "small booklet about July 1, A birth date of 1758 for Jacob Wink, Jr. is given nowhere else that I am aware of. 3. In correspondence to S. L. Wink, dated April 6, 1939, D. L. Thornbury says Yesterday I was in Bedford and got a copy of Jacob Jr's will dated Jan 7, 1820 probated March 7, He names wife Elizabeth (Kline). Makes his brother Uriah Wink and his wife's brother Jno. Kline as Executors. 4. Delmar L. Thornbury, DESCENDANTS OF JACOB WINK, SENIOR, BORN 1725, AND ELIZABETH BORN 1733, SETTLERS IN BEDFORD, NOW FULTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA ABOUT AS COMPILED BY THEIR GREAT-GREAT GRANDSON D. L. THORNBURY, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. This manuscript has been in continual possession of S. Logue Wink, Thornbury s collaborator, Wink s widow Temperance, his daughter Juanita Holman, and her son Harry S. Holman except for a couple of years when it was in the hands of another researcher in Fulton County. Some of the marginal annotations in this manuscript are in handwriting which I recognize as belonging to members of this immediate family; a substantial number of the annotations, however, are in handwriting that I do not recognize and I am presuming these to be by the other (known, but unnamed here) researcher. My photocopy of this manuscript was made in July 1999.

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 2 Thornbury records for "FAMILY NUMBER ONE" (Jacob Wink, Jr.): The oldest son, JACOB WINK, JUNIOR married [penned insertion "2nd" in what I believe is Harry Holman's handwriting] ELIZABETH KLINE. He was born 175x [the date is over written as 1759 ; I cannot identify the hand nor discern what was originally written.] and died She was a sister to Mary who married a brother of her husband, Elias Wink. Both were daughters of Conrad and Anna Kline. ["(Sipe)" is pencilled in between "Anna" and "Kline" by an unknown hand.] He took up a large amount of land in Bedford County, 700 acres from warrant records. His will is probated March 7, 1820, naming as executors Uriah Wink (his brother) and Jno. Kline (his wife's brother). Will Book 2 P 14 and is dated Jany 20, He names his wife Elizabeth, and his 2 sons Samuel Wink and Jacob T. Wink. He also names his daughters, Elizabeth, Sarah, Idaw, Rachel, Rebecca, Delany and Diana. He also named two grandchildren, -Sarah Limber and Catherine Limber. In 1822, the minor children applied for the appointment of a guardian, and Andrew Mann was made guardian. Those under 14 were Rachel, Rebecca, Delany and Diana. Those over 14 were Samuel, Idaw, and Jacob T. Jacob Wink, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the Wink Cemetary on Geo. M. Wink's place on Licking Creek, Fulton County, PA. Their descendants as much as have been ascertained, were: [five and one-half pages of listing of descendants follows.] 1759 is the year calculated from the gravestone. Note that Holman gives the birth date as 1756 in both his 1963 and his 1966 accounts (#5 and #6 below); both are known to have been derived from this Thornbury account. Therefore, I take the original date to have been 1756 and this correction to have been made later than Penned in the margin beside the entry for Jacob Wink, Jr., in Harry Holman's handwriting is: 1st to Elizabeth Truax sister of John Wink's 1st wife Mary Truax. D. before Children probably by 1st m. From the "FAMILY NUMBER FIVE" (Elias Wink) section of the same Thornbury manuscript: The fifth son ELIAS WINK B 1773 Died 1853 MARRIED MARY KLINE B D They had 5 children William; Anna; Elizabeth; Jacob K. Caleb U. As so much of the Kline blood is found in the Wink Family, as a brother Jacob Jr. married a sister of Mary by the name of Elizabeth, some record of the Klines is here given. Conrad Kline of Belfast Township, farmer, will is dated Dec 23, 1797, proved Aug 5, 1798, mentions wife Anna. Also his oldest son, William Kline, other sons, John Kline; Hugh Kline; Abraham Kline and his youngest son Conrad Kline. Mentions his daughters Anna Sipes; Caty Sipes; Mary Wink; Elizabeth Kline and Margaret Kline. To each of his daughters he left 50 pounds. He mentions his land on Licking Creek, in Belfast Township, then Bedford, now Fulton County. It is remarkable here that his daughter Elizabeth who was the wife of Jacob Wink Jr., is called by her maiden name.

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 3 This would lead one to the following inference concerning Family Number One [Jacob Jr.] "In 1797 Elizabeth Kline was not married as yet to Jacob Wink, Jr. In turn this would infer a first marriage, as the Census of 1800 shows 3 girls and no boys for Jacob Jr. The Census for 1810 shows 2 boys and 6 girls. [This may be an error; 5 girls are reported in 1810 in #10 below.] This is practically in accord with the Will of Jacob Wink Jr. That Andrew Mann was made guardian of the minor children would be a basis of an inference that the last name of the first wife was Mann. The data on No 1 is not full, and later information may set up two marriages. "ELIAS WINK is a helpful member of the family as a whole, for in the Census of 1850, for the first time, the place of birth was required to be set forth. As Elias was the only surviving son of Jacob Wink Sr., the statement that Elias Wink was born in New Jersey, sets that state as a residence of the family prior to coming to Bedford County, PA. In the Census Book for 1850 of Fulton County, Pa. (which had just been formed) Page 60 Belfast Township, line or family 30, is the following ELIAS WINK 77, New Jersey; Mary 73 Pa.; Anna 44 Pa.; Elizabeth 42; Alvery 9 From the "FAMILY NUMBER THREE" (John Wink) section of the same Thornbury manuscript: The third son of Jacob Wink, Senior and Elizabeth was JOHN WINK, birth and death dates unknown, married two times, the name of his first wife is not known, and the name of his second wife was IVY DILLON, birth and death dates not known. [ Mary Truax is penned in the margin, not in Holman's handwriting.]... The tradition simply says that when Ivy Dillon was old enough she married John Wink. Recent investigation has demonstrated that she was a second wife, and was married about A son of the first marriage, is shown by the following Court Order in Book Docket 2 Page 171, Bedford County, Pa Records, 'Nov 6, 1809 on the petition of Jacob Wink, a minor above the age of fourteen praying to be admitted to choose a guardian, -- and on motion by J. Tod, the Court appoints John Wink (father of said minor) Guardian over his person and estate during his minority. How many years over 14 is not known, but it does settle that John Wink married first prior to 1793, and his first wife's name is not known ["is not known" is struck out and "Mary Truax" is penned in.]. In the Census of 1800, John Wink is listed with 2 minor sons under 10 and 1 minor daughter under 10, and himself and his wife as the two adults. [In the margin beside this sketch is hand written (not in Holman's hand) "John Wink's 1st wife was Mary Truax daughter of Samuel and Sarah Stilwell Truax. She predeceased her father as shown in adm his estate... (? writing uncertain) a grandson Jacob. Samuel Truax d. 1801"] Unfortunately, the evidence that Thornbury cites is scant -- he cites only a few wills and census records. His writing here and elsewhere in the manuscript, however, is quite careful, specifying "inferences" and "deductions" so I will assume that many of the undocumented "facts" contained in this manuscript are much more substantial than mere inference. 5. Harry S. Holman in a compilation THE WINK FAMILY, deriving mainly from Thornbury but also including his own research, prepared for immediate family, and dated 7 Sep 1963, reports: 1 Jacob Wink II B New Jersey, D. Feb 20, 1820 Needmore --- Elizabeth Kline Wink, 1771, D. April 21, 1831 [note discrepancy with 1837 in #6 below], Needmore.

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 4 3 John Wink, B New Jersey, D. Beallsville Ohio --- Ivy Dillon, B. Thompson Twp. (Tonoloway), Fulton Co. 5 Elias Wink, B New Jersey, D. Aug 10, 1853, Needmore --- Mary Kline Wink, 1788, D Needmore, PA. They were married about Harry S. Holman, in his compilation The WINK GENEALOGY for Mrs. Katherine Palmer, 301 E. Main St., Cortland, Ohio as Compiled by: Hon. S. Logue Wink and D. L. Thornbury Arranged by Harry S. Holman, and transferred to Mrs. Palmer by letter dated June 18, 1966, paraphrased the introduction to each family in narrative style. This document was heavily annotated by Katherine Palmer and Roy C. Palmer (her husband). At some later (unknown) time, the original copy came into the archives of the Fulton County Historical Society. Additional annotations could well have been added since its placement in the archives. My copy of this document is from the archives, copied 17 Jun For FAMILY NUMBER ONE Holman reports: : JACOB WINK JUNIOR was born in New Jersey in 1756 [overwritten as 1759 ]. He was the first [overwritten as 2 nd ] child born to JACOB WINK ESQUIRE and his wife ELIZABETH. He was a good sized fellow when his parents left New Jersey to settle in the [sic] what is now Fulton County, Pennsylvania. This farm was on the Licking Creek a few miles above the town of Needmore. He would become a farmer too and live in that neighborhood all his life. Jacob married ELIZABETH KLINE who was born in She would have been about fifteen years younger than Jacob. JACOB WINK died on the 20th of February, He was in the sixtyfourth year of his life. ELIZABETH WINK followed him in death on the 21st of April, 1837, in the sixty-sixth year of her life. JACOB's will is recorded in Bedfod in Will Book 2 on page 14. It was probated on the 7th of March, It was dated the 20th of January, It shows his wife as ELIZABETH. He listed his children under the age of fourteen: Rachel, Rebecca, Delany, and Diana. Therefore Samuel, Idaw, and Jacob T. Wink were over fourteen and were born before John Kline, his brother-in-law, and Sarah and Catherine Limber, his grand-children, were mentioned. In his life Jacob had been a large land holder having 700 acres in land warrants recorded in Bedford. ELIZABETH had a younger sister, Mary, who married JACOB WINK's younger brother, Elias. Both girls were daughters of Conrad and Anna Sipe Kline. [Lineage follows.] and for FAMILY NUBER FIVE ELIAS WINK was born in [ "8 Feb" -- pencilled insertion, not in Holman's hand] 1773 in New Jersey as shown by the 1850 census. This listing of Elias Wink in the census is a proof of the Winks in New Jersey before the arrival to Pennsylvania. He was the only surviving member of his family at that time. He married Mary Kline. She was born in 1778 the daughter of Conrad and Anna Kline. She was a sister to Jacob Wink Jr.'s wife Elizabeth. [The preceding sentence has been struck through with a single pen line.] They were married about 1798 for that year in her Father's will he mentions his daughter Mary Wink. They had five children: William, Anna, Elizabeth, Jacob Kline, and Caleb U. Wink. They lived on the farm on the Licking Creek which was given to Elias by his Father in 1806 at his death. This near [sic] the town of Needmore. Elias died 10th of August, 1843, at his home in the eightieth year of his lfe. She followed him in death in They were buried on the Licking Creek farm in the old Wink Cemetary. [Penned note in unknown hand follows: "Mary b 9 Feb 1778 d 9 Aug 1885 Wink Cem"]

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 5 and for FAMILY NUMBER THREE JOHN WINK was born in New Jersey in As a small lad he moved with his parents to the Licking Creek in the present County of Fulton in Pennsylvania. He was married two times. First he married Mary Truax who was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Stilwell Truax. Though she died some time before He as well as Adam Wink served in the local militia in Then he as well as the other brothers received his plantation from his Father at his death in There were seven children by the first marriage: Jacob Wink, John, Amos, and four daughters. He remarried in to Ivy Dillon whose parents were killed by the Indians.... Thornbury's account is a brief reporting of facts. Holman rewrote and paraphrased the information into narrative style, but also added: with reference to FAMILY NUMBER ONE Jacob's presumed birth in New Jersey and his age -- "good sized fellow" -- when his family moved from New Jersey to Fulton Co., PA. Elizabeth's [the second Elizabeth?] date of death as 21 April Warrants are recorded in Bedford. Conrad and Anna Sipe Kline as parents of Elizabeth and Mary Kline. with reference to FAMILY NUMBER FIVE An inference that Mary was married about 1798 [rather than "sometime before 1798" as would be inferred from her father s will]. With reference to FAMILY NUMBER THREE John s 1 st marriage to Mary Truax, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Stilwell Truax Mary s death before Katherine (and husband Roy) Palmer, in a letter to Holman dated 1 Nov 1966 acknowledging receipt of #6, asks 4 major questions, the first of which is pertinent here: Jacob Wink Jr married Elizabeth Kline. From the way it reads this is predicated on the fact that his will mentions John KLINE as his brother-in-law. We have a TRUAX Genealogy prepared by a Mrs. Hires in 1933 and worked on by a half dozen other Truax's since then that says Jacob Jr. married Elizabeth TRUAX daughter of Samuel TRUAX & Sara STILWELL. Elizabeth's sister Meriam was the wife of John KLINE. Although not legally a Brother-in-law (if this is the case) he still might call him that. I call my Brother-In- Law's wife, my Sister-in-law). Do you have any record on estate of SAMUEL TRUAX who d about 1801 and Sarah Stilwell Truax who probably died ca 1824 at which time final settlement was made on his estate -- not to be done until after her death. OR Records of estate of Conrad & Anna (SIPES) KLINE which would prove which Elizabeth she was? I take Holman's marginal annotation in the Thornbury manuscript (Family #1) -- indicating Elizabeth Truax as a first wife and Elizabeth Kline as a second wife and presuming that the children were of the first marriage -- to be in response to Palmer's documentation of the Truax connection together with Thornbury's speculation about two marriages (in Family #5) -- disregarding Thornbury's "Elizabeth Mann" speculation. Had Holman had this information before preparing the manuscript for the Palmers, he surely would have included it. The Thornbury manuscript was in his possession at that time, however, so that he could have easily added the marginal note in response to Palmer's relating the Truax connection.

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 6 Palmer s note that John Kline was the husband of Meriam, a sister of Elizabeth (wife of Jacob, Jr.) and not, therefore, a brother of Eilzabeth -- may be important. Thornbury s assumption of John Kline as brother of Elizabeth may be the entire basis for the assumption of a wife named Elizabeth Kline. 8. None of R. C. Palmers addenda pages to the Holman (1966) account bear on these matters. 9. I have examined Jacob Wink, Jr.'s will. It reads in part: First I give and devise to my beloved wife Elizabeth Wink the plantation wereon [sic] I now live during her widowhood, but if she should marry it is my will and desire that the plantation be sold by my executors hereafter mentioned in the best manner and advantage for the benefit of my heirs in the following manner to wit... to my two sons Samuel Wink and Jacob T. Wink each twenty dollars to my four daughters which is unmarried each fifty dollars to be paid them when they arrive at the full age of eighteen years to my two granddaughters Sarah and Catharine Limber each ten dollars the balance of the said plantation it is my will and desire that it be equally divided between my seven daughters Elizabeth, Sarah, Idaw, Rachel, Rebecca, Delany, and Diamia share and share alike. And lastly I do hereby appoint Uriah Wink and John Kline my sole Executors of this my last will and testament... Contrary to Thornbury s assertion, John Klein is not identified as Jacob s brother in law -- nor identified at all, other than being named as Executor. Note: the spellings of the daughter s names vary in other reportings; I have verified these spellings carefully with photocopies of both the original will and the (transcribed) court copy of the will filed in the Bedford Co. Courthouse.

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page I have examined the census records for the Jacob Wink, Jr. family in the Pioneer Historical Society, Bedford, PA 16 Jun 2000 (These are, I believe, compilations, rather than microfilm copies of the original. My notes re: the record in the historical society are incomplete.) Page Head of Household Free White Males Free White Females and over and over Jacob Wink Jacob Wink Elizabeth Wink Thornbury reports 6 girls in the 1810 census rather than the 5 given here. The 1800 and 1810 census records present a wife having been born in the period ca 1766 (not more than 44 in 1810) (at least 26 in 1800). This (1820) record must be the Jacob, Jr. household. Elizabeth, wife of Jacob, Sr. d All other sons of Jacob, Sr. -- Adam, John, Uriah, and Elias are all listed as heads of household in the 1820 census. The children s ages in this 1820 record do reasonably agree with previous census except for a male aged Was this: A relative come to live with family after Jacob s death? Or was this a census taker s error, this entry meant for Elizabeth herself? Elizabeth herself appears not to be in the 1820 census. Did I make an error in transcription? Or was she entered as male by census taker Or is Elizabeth, the oldest daughter (age 20-29) head of household? Her younger sister, Sarah was already married; probably Elizabeth was also. Or was Elizabeth (Truax?) dead? This may well be the source of Holman s annotation in the Thornbury manuscript 1st to Elizabeth Truax sister of John Wink's 1st wife Mary Truax. D. before Children probably by 1st m. But then why was Elizabeth Wink named as head of household? In which case, Jacob ought to have been married to Elizabeth Kline by 1820 for there are children born up until about 1812

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page My own reading of the stones in the Wink Cemetery and comparison with other readings by Samuel Butterbaugh reading in the 1960 s contained on the Fulton Co. Butterbaugh reports 14 d. ; I cannot find that. In the next row (either at or near the foot of the grave of Jacob, Jr.) is a grave marked IN Memory of ELIZABETH Wife of URIAH WINK departed this life Sept 16, 1856 Aged 76 years 7 Mo & 7 days (hence, b. 9 Feb 1780) Hazel Harr, has identified this Elizabeth as the "dau. of Conrad and Anna Kline." These dates would be consistent with Elizabeth Kline, unmarried in Samuel Butterbaugh, however, has identified her as Elizabeth Deshong. I take the birth date 1759 (year only) given for Jacob, Jr. in many/most of the accounts as having been derived from the gravestone inscription. 12. A twelve page document titled Wink in the Pioneer Historical Library, Bedford, PA (copied 16 Jun 2000), submitted by Richard J. Bottomfield, 1427 Julia Ave., McLean,. VA. The authorship, date of writing and date of entry into the Historical Society Library are unknown. Jacob Wink Jr. m. Elizabeth Kline (Cline) (9 children) Elias Wink B D m. Mary Kline B D. 1855" a sister of Jacob Jr's wife. (5 children) I have not examined this account in detail, but it seems upon first examination to have been derived substantially from Thornbury 13. Flora Mellott's "History and Genealogy of the Family of Elias Wink son of Jacob Wink Esquire" dated January 1976 copies the introduction (One Wink Family) and the introductory paragraph for Elias Wink verbatim from Holman (1966) except for: Caleb V. Wink" instead of "Caleb U. Wink" "in Belfast Township along Licking Creek" instead of "on the Licking Creek" "Mary" instead of "she" "August 9th, 1855" instead of "1855" (Mary's death date) "on the farm" instead of "on the Licking Creek farm" This source, being copied verbatim from Holman, adds nothing of interest

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page Communication from Mike Thorne (11 Mar 2001) on Early Wink Family History discussion list ( poses the question which initiated my development of this paper. I currently have 3 Jacob Winks that appear to be the same but there are some problems I'd like to resolve before merging them. 1) Jacob Wink, Jr. b 1759 in NJ; d Feb 20, (S of Jacob Wink & Elizabeth Truax) Wife Elizabeth Kline, b 1771; d Apr 21, 1836 (9 children are shown) no other spouses recorded. she was daughter of Anna B. Sipe & Conrad Kline 2) Jacob Wink, Jr. b 1759 in NJ; d Feb 20, Three wives shown (and on the surface work they don't work very well). (S of Jacob Wink & Elizabeth Truax) Wife 1: Florence LNU, b 1771; d Apr 24, no children shown. she was the daughter of unknown Wife 2: Eliza Kline, b 1771; d Apr 21, no children shown. she was the daughter of unknown Wife 3: Elizabeth Truax, b May 5, 1773; d Apr 21, (9 children are shown...seem to be same as above but listed under Elizabeth Kline) she was the daughter of Sarah Stillwell & Samuel M. Truax 3) Jacob Wink, b 1756; d? (no parents shown for this Jacob) Wife: Elizabeth Truax, b 1771; d? she was the daughter of Sarah Stillwell & Samuel M. Truax How do these accounts agree with or vary from other known accounts? Are there any important clues here? Is it possible to identify the sources of the three accounts from the information they contain? The Thornbury account (and Holman s derived from it) give Jacob, Jr. s birth date as 1756 until sometime after 1966 when the Thornbury accounts were edited (by an unknown person) to The date 1759 (year only) is easily calculated directly from the grave stone. Therefore, account #3 possibly derived from Thornbury or Holman, though neither (as originally published) mentioned Elizabeth Truax. The identity of Elizabeth Truax (rather than Eanthal or Eamthal) as wife of Jacob, Sr. may identify accounts 1) and 2) as having come from Truax research Birth date for wife 1771 in four of the five wife accounts appears in the earliest information I have (from Thornbury). I cannot identify its source. 5 May 1773 (for Wife Elizabeth Truax). This date appears nowhere in my previous records and I cannot identify it. Death dates (for wife Elizabeth) vary. Thornbury does not give a date; Holman gives

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page Apr 1831 (#5-1963) 21 Apr 1837 (#6-1966). Thorne s accounts give: 21 Apr 1836 and 21 Apr 1826 (for Elizabeth Kline); (Typographical error?) 21 Apr 1836 (for Elizabeth Truax); 24 Apr 1836 (for Florence ) I cannot draw any useful inferences from this (Thorne) information except A wife Florence appears nowhere else in any information that I am aware of. The dates are so nearly the same as for several of the Elizabeth accounts that I can only take Florence to be a nickname because there were so many Elizabeth s among the Winks or else an error. SUMMARY and CONCLUSIONS The interpretation of these records seems to be: Regarding Jacob Wink, Jr's children: From the census records, Jacob, Jr. had 0 boys and 3 girls in 1800; 2 boys and 5 girls in 1810 (Thornbury shows 6 girls). By 1820, Jacob had died, Sarah (and presumably Elizabeth) had married. In 1820, Jacob Wink, Jr. names 9 children in his will -- two sons (Samuel and Jacob T.) and seven daughters (Elizabeth, Sarah, Idaw, Rachel, Rebecca, Delany, Diamia). He states that four of them are unmarried but does not specify which. He also mentions two granddaughters, Sarah and Catherine Limber. (Thornbury later shows Sarah and Catherine Limber as daughters of Sarah Wink and Limber.) Thornbury (presumably from court records that I have not examined) reports In 1822, Jacob Wink, Jr. had 4 children under age (therefore born after ca the last four named in his 1820 will and presumably the four unmarried daughters) and 3 children over age 14 (born before ca. 1806). Presumably Elizabeth and Sarah were married at that time. The census, court, and other records are not altogether consistent, but we can construct some probable ranges for birth dates of Jacob, Jr.'s children Census+Court Other Elizabeth Sarah (1 st child b in #6) Idaw Samuel (1802 in #6) Rachel (30 Sep 1804 on gravestone) Jacob T Rebecca (1808 penned in #6; m. 1829) Delany (ca penned in #6) Diamia (twin of Delany in #6)

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 11 Regarding a possible marriage to Elizabeth Kline Thornbury asserts (but cites no evidence) that Elizabeth Kline, daughter of Conrad and Anna Sipes Kline, was a wife of Jacob Wink, Jr. (He also asserts that Elizabeth had a sister Mary who was married to Elias Wink, brother of Jacob, Jr.) From Conrad Kline's will (dated 23 Dec. 1797) in which his daughter Elizabeth is referred to as Elizabeth Kline, we infer that Elizabeth Kline was not married to Jacob Wink, Jr. before 23 Dec 1797 (if at all). Jacob Wink, Jr. had three children before 1801; If Elizabeth Kline was unmarried in 1797, as inferred from her father's will, it seems likely that some of Jacob Jr.'s older children were not by Elizabeth Kline. The inferences surrounding John Kline are particularly troubling. Jacob Jr.'s will does name John Kline as executor, but (contrary to Thornbury) does not identify him as a brother to his wife Elizabeth. Palmer notes that John Kline was the husband of Meriam Truax, a sister of Elizabeth Truax (assumed to be the wife of Jacob, Jr.) and not, therefore, a brother of Eilzabeth Kline. If this assumed sister-brother Kline relationship is the basis for Thronbury s identification of Jacob s Jr. s wife, Elizabeth, as Elizabeth Kline, this identification is seriously flawed. Elizabeth Kline's dates (as wife of Jacob Jr.) are given by Thornbury(?) as Where did this name/dates come from? Is death in 1810 a first wife? There is no birth date of (or near) 1771 in the Wink cemetery and the only death date of 1810 is Elizabeth, wife of Jacob, Sr. What about the missing gravestone theory? Regarding a possible marriage to Elizabeth Truax The Truax genealogy is apparently well researched and has been published in several forms as the work has progressed. There could be some solid evidence here for a first wife Elizabeth Truax. I do not know precisely what the "Truax Genealogy" by Mrs. Hires, referred to by Palmer, is -- but From examination of "The Truax Website" maintained by The Association of the Descendants of Philippe de Trieux ( ) I conclude that this information is probably contained in Hires, Thura Colby Truax; Truax, Everett; Truax, Sandra: Thura Truax Hires manuscripts: A Genealogical Study of the Names du Trieux, Trieux, Trueax, Truex in the States of Pennsylvania and Ohio, published by the Association in This work exists in the Library of Congress, but I have not located it in any closer library. This information is very likely also contained in Hires,Thura Colby Truax: "Bedford County, Pennsylvania Revolutionary soldiers of the Truax-Truex family with some of their Descendants, , published in A mimeograph

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 12 The cemetery evidence: copy of this work exists in the State Library of Pennsylvania, but I have not examined it. Unfortunately, there is no stone marking the grave to the west of that of Jacob, Jr. Thornbury states that "Jacob Wink, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the Wink Cemetary" Was this grave marked in 1939, but unmarked today? The stone for Mary (otherwise unidentified) on the other side (ca ) could be consistent with a wife of Jacob Jr. ( ) -- she would be 16 years younger than Jacob and with children born between ca 1796 (age ca. 20) and ca (age 36), and also consistent with Jacob's naming of his wife as "Elizabeth Wink" in his 1820 will -- which would indicate a marriage to an Elizabeth between Mary's death in 1816 and his own death in Who was Mary? Thus, the evidence at hand is mixed and it is hard to draw firm conclusion. Tentative conclusions are: The Truax work, if substantiated, identifies Elizabeth Truax as a wife of Jacob Wink, Jr. As far as I can tell all reporting of a marriage to Elizabeth Kline derives from Thornbury. Jacob Jr., may have married Elizabeth Kline, but: Thornbury merely asserts and cites no evidence; a scenario of two marriages is indeed possible, but lacks evidence of plausibility. Part of Thornbury s reasoning seems to be based upon John Kline, executor, as brother of Elizabeth; this identification is not substantiated by the will itself and is in conflict with Palmer s identification of John Kline Nevertheless, Thornbury so often identifies inferences and speculations, thereby qualifying questionable information and thereby giving substantial weight of credibility to the what he reports without such qualification. This is slim justification, based upon evaluation of the worker rather than evidence! Nevertheless, I will take Thornbury s assertion (Elizabeth Kline) as probably correct, but I really want to know : What made Thornbury so sure of the Kline marriage? The cemetery evidence is weakly circumstantial at best, allows several interpretations, and points in no clear direction. My working (and not very firm) answer to the question of Jacob Wink, Jr. s wives (until there is more evidence) is: 1 st wife: Elizabeth Truax b.?; d. perhaps 1810 (Thornbury) 2 nd wife: Elizabeth Kline b (Thornbury); d. 21 Apr 1836 or 1837 (Holman; Thorne)

Wives of Jacob Wink, Jr. Page 13 FURTHER RESEARCH NECESSARY: Examine the Truax genealogies; start with the PA state library. Is there anything to be learned about a possible Truax link starting investigation from John Wink's wife, Mary Truax? Must verify Palmer s claim that John Kline was husband of Meriam Truax rather than brother of Elizabeth Kline. Upon what other evidence might Thornbury have based his rather firm conclusion of a marriage with Elizabeth Kline? There ought to be a lot of Kline information in the Fulton Co. Historical Society archives. Do the dates for a wife of Jacob Jr. (given by the source #2 which I have assigned as Thornbury, before July 1939) and assigned to Elizabeth Kline provide any leads? Where did these dates come from? Was the grave beside Jacob Jr. marked in 1939, but unmarked today? Did this identify a wife Elizabeth as a Kline (as Thornbury suggests) or a Truax? What might the dates have been? Are there any records of this cemetery before the Hazel Harr (date?) and Samuel Butterbaugh (in the 1960's) readings? Does Hazel Harr have any insights into who Mary was? Must look at original 1820 census record; 1830 might also be helpful. I have not examined the guardianship papers for Jacob s minor children. Is there any evidence there? The Mann family was prominent in Fulton Co. There might well be records relating to the Mann family clarifying Andrew Mann s role as guardian of Jacob, Jr.'s minor children. Is Elizabeth (#1?) a Mann? Is there anything in the correspondence to S. L. Wink (ca. 45 pieces from numerous correspondents, all around 1939) that sheds light on this? I have not examined this correspondence thoroughly. Look further for Elizabeth, wife of Uriah Wink (b. 9 Feb 1780; d. 16 Sep 1856 dates from gravestone). Is this Elizabeth Kline (Harr report) or Elizabeth Deshong (Butterbaugh report)? TYPOGRAPHICAL KEY I have entered factual information in black underlining names and titles of sources, with Proper Names in boldface and [editorial comments] between brackets in green. I have entered quoted material verbatim in blue type and with indented margin. Proper Names again are in boldface and [editorial comments] are between brackets in green. Conclusions and inferences I have drawn from the evidence are in green with important conclusions in boldface. Remaining questions and issues for further research are in maroon.
