He married LOUISA JANE BERRY 09 May 1870 in Walla Walla, WA 7, daughter of THOMAS BERRYand MARTHA TIMBERLAKE. She was born 14 Jan 1849 in Shelby, IN, and died 03 Feb Notes for NATHAN PIERCE: History of Umatilla County by Colonel Wm. Parsons and Morrow County by W.S. Shiach - in Oregon. Published by W.H. Lever in NATHAN PIERCE Page To the memory of the noble veteran, esteemed pioneer and leading citizen of Umatilla County whose name appears above we desire to add our tribute, though small it may be, in granting this memorial to his worthy life a place in these chronicles of our county, where his exemplary conduct, firm stand for the principles of truth and uprightness and his life of integrity and industry have endeared his name to all and made him a worthy example for rising generations to follow. 4 He was born in Indiana, on April 24, 1838, and received a good education there in Franklin College, near Indianapolis, remaining until the breaking out of the Civil War, when he enlisted in the Forty-ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving until the battle of Stone River. Here he was so severely wounded that it was necessary to quit the service, and after being discharged he returned to his home and later came to Montana and engaged in mining until 1868, at which time he came to Walla Walla County and joined the ranks of educators for two years, where he was eminently successful. In 1870 he was married to Miss Louisa J. Berry, daughter ot Thomas F. and Martha J. Berry, pioneers to the coast in 1853 and to Walla Walla County in To this union were born the following children: Henry F., married and living in San Francisco; Oscar C., married and living in Milton; Nellie, wife of F.A. Sikes, living on the home place; Ada, a graduate of the State Normal at Weston and teacher in the city schools of Milton; Lincoln, a graduate of the high school; Epsie, attending school; and one deceased in infancy. Mr.. Pierce was affiliated with the G.A.R., also with the I.O.O.F., where he was very active. He always showed a marked interest in political affairs, having been selected to act as mayor of his city for several terms, also as state elector at one time. When he first came to the county he took a pre-emption and sold it, then took a homestead one and one-half miles east from Milton, which Mrs. Pierce still owns in addition to about several hundred acres of fine land. He had improved his land in a first-class manner by erecting fine buildings and procuring other necessaries for successfully carrying on a fine estate. He also owned a home in Milton, where his widow now resides. He was active in the welfare of his city and the county and state at large and was foremost in all that would advance their interests. He was raised in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church because his church was not represented where he lived, and in this domination he did good service and was beloved by all, while his everyday life was true to the teachings of his Divine Master. During the year of 1899 his health failed and he went to California to recuperate, but the boon that he sought eluded his grasp and he passed to his eternal reward on July 26, His remains were brought to Milton and interred in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Mrs. Pierce survives him and resides in her elegant home in Milton with those of her children that have not gone into the world for themselves. =============================== Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, Record about Nathan Pierce Name: Nathan Pierce State Filed: Indiana ===================== Nathan Pierce Dead He Passed Away in a San Francisco Hospital at an Early Hour Wednesday Morning Wednesday forenoon a dispatch was received in this city announcing the distressing news of Hon. Nathan Pierce's death in a San Francisco hospital. The end came unexpectedly at 7:30 o'clock on Wednesday, July 26 and was due doubtless to paralysis of the heart, but as to this no direct information has as yet been received. The telegram also stated that the body would be embalmed and shipped home for interment, and it is expected the funeral party will start from San Francisco today and will probably reach this city next Monday at 11 o'clock a.m. Mr. Pierce left Milton on Thursday July 6th for San Francisco to secure relief in the hospitals of that city for heart troubles. He had been ailing the greater part of the past winter and realized that if the progress of the disease with which he was afflicted was not stayed the end must soon come. He reached his destination safely and after visiting with his son, Mr. Henry Pierce, for a brief period entered the Homesopathic hospital, but secured no relief. The cold winds and fogs Descendants of Nehemiah Fisher Pierce Courtesy of Frazier Farmstead Museum page 4

5 that sweep over San Francisco during the summer months were found to be derogatory to his health and helped to hasten the inroads of the disease. He was aged 64 years. Nathan Pierce was born on a farm in Gibson county, Indiana, and while a little child suffered the loss of his mother by death. During his boyhood days he met with innumerable obstacles trying to get an education, but so far profited at the public schools as to be able to occupy positions as a teacher at the age of 18. In 1861 he offered his services to the government, entering Company J, 42nd Indiana Volunteers. Two years he served without missing a duty and was then honorably discharged at the battle of Stone River. Retiring to civil life, Mr. Pierce resumed his duties as teacher. In 1865, however, seeking a wider field, he came out West. Three years he mined in Montana. Not being well satisfied with this, he came to Umatilla county in 1868, when this section was almost a wilderness. Here he has made his home for over thirty years, farming and milling, and gained wide popularity and the esteem of all that formed his acquaintance. His was a strong personality. He ardently and conscieutiously believed in the political reformation of the nation and was a strong factor in county and state politics. He was a pioneer inthis work and cared nought what public opinion might be so long as he believed he was right. He was a prohibitionist when that party was not only insignificent but decidedly unpopular in the state and was a candidate for state treasurer on that ticket. Of course, he was defeated and expected nothing less. All of his political work was done strictly on the line of principle. He helped organize the union party in this state and was successively a candidate for governor and secretary of state on the peoples party ticket. He attended as... 7 The Eagle is indebted to F.A. Sikes, a former principal of Milton schools, for the appended obituary of Mrs. Ada Pierce Reed, a former Milton woman, whose death occurred very suddenly while she was visiting in Florida: Ada Pierce Reed, daughter of Nathan and Mrs. L.J. Pierce, born here in Milton June 1878, died in Florida January 24, while visiting her brother, H.F. Pierce, and her sister, Mrs. Epsa Pierce Stine. Ada is the first of the six children reared here by Nathan and Mrs. Pierce to pass on. Other near relatives are Oscar Pierce and Lincoln Pierce of Oakland, CA, and her oldest sister, Nellie Pierce Sikes, who lives in Lebanon OR. Also eight nephews and three nieces. She grew to womanhood here. After finishing the public school in Milton, she attended the Weston Normal to prepare for teaching, and taught at Touchet, WA for one or two years; then about the turn of the century she taught some four or five years in the Milton public schools. But tiring of teaching, she prepared for office work and for some years was employed in the state house at Olympia, WA, where she continued for a few years after the death of her mother in In 1932 she married Thomas Reed and they moved to Long Beach, CA, where she continued till the death of her husband last August. She had planned a pleasant winter visit with her brother and sister in Florida, but had been there only a short time when she succumbed to a sudden heart attack. Her remains are to be taken to Long Beach for interment. ================= 1910 United States Federal Census > California > San Francisco > San Francisco Assembly District 41 > District 275 Line 36, 2521 Octavia St. Pierce, Henry F. He married MARY CATHERINE STUART 24 Dec 1885 in Pike, Indiana 34, daughter of ROBERT STUART and NARCISSA BRENTON. She was born Jul 1869 in Indiana, and died 12 Oct 1936 in Sunnyside, Yakima, Washington 35. 15 ANDREW J. PIERCE resides about eight miles south from Wilbur on a fine estate of eight hundred acres, which he has cleared as the result of his labors in the course of seven years. He was born in Indiana, on December 27, 1858, the son of Nehemiah and Elizabeth R. (Green) Pierce, natives of Vermont and Indiana, respectively. The father walked from Vermont to Indiana when a boy and settled in the wilds of the then new Hoosier state, clearing up a farm in the woods. His wife shared his pioneer labors and they are now prominent and highly respected people. Our subject was educated in the district schools of Pike county, Indiana, and after his father's death, which occurred when Andrew was thirteen years of age, he and his brother took charge of their mother's farm. They handled that until In that year he determined to see the great world and accordingly, journeyed until he reached Milton, Oregon, and took a homestead near. He farmed there until 1897, then came to his present location and began purchasing land. He has the fine estate above mentioned, well improved, besides more than half a section in Oregon. When he landed in Oregon in 1886, he had no capital whatever and it speaks well of the energy and wise industry of Mr. Pierce when we observe the large estates which he now owns. In 1885, Mr. Pierce married Miss Mary C., daughter of Robert and Narsissa (Brenton) Stuart, natives of Indiana. The father was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in Company E, Fifty-eight Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Mrs. Pierce was born in Indiana, on June 1, To this marriage the following children have been born, Robert F., deceased, Charles H., Cecil E., Ruth, Olive, Alice, Herbert, deceased, and Rachel. Mr. Pierce has two brothers and one sister, Alva, Nathan, deceased, and Mrs. Ama Smith, deceased. ************ 1900 United States Federal Census > Washington > Lincoln > Wilson Creek > District 38 Line 44 Pierce, Andrew J.
