Frederick Kruger Project #8760 Revised Research Report 14 August

Frederick Kruger Project # August 2015 REVISED RESEARCH REPORT OBJECTIVES Attempt to locate the declaration of intent and/or naturalization papers for the client s great-great-grandfather Frederick Kruger (born 2/26/1854, died 5/19/1946 in New London, Wisconsin). Attempt to locate the naturalization papers for the client s great-great-greatgrandfather Henrieh Schmude (born 1/10/1823 (Prussia), died 12/13/1902 in Poy Sippi, Wisconsin. The client has the declaration of intent. RESULTS The initial report, dated 6 August 2015, was not based on all the known facts from the client s posted family tree. As a result of a review of that tree it was determined the naturalization record found in that report was not for the correct Fred Krueger / Kruger. Since our Fred was in Winnebago County in 1900 the records for that county were checked. Unfortunately, nothing was found matching our Fred Kreuger / Kruger. 2

Based on the information in hand at the time of my initial research, it appeared that there was a match with the client s statement that Fred Kruger was born 26 February 1854 in Prussia and that he died in the town of New London, Wisconsin, which straddles Outagamie and Waupaca Counties. So finding a Fred Krueger living in Dupont, Waupaca, Wisconsin on the 1900 U.S. census 1 who was born Germany in February 1854 seemed like a logical fit. And so that research was focused on for records related to Outagamie and Waupaca counties. In all honesty, I simply did not notice that a link to the client s Ancestry.com posted tree had accompanied the initial project Research Request. Having access to these sources allows for a better evaluation of records. One of the records in the client s tree is the 1900 U.S. census 2 which they believe is the family of their ancestors. Ironically this Fred Kruger was also transcribed with the spelling of Krueger however a look at the actual document would appear to show a spelling of Kruger. And sure enough, this Fred Kruger was born in Germany in February of Winnebago County s northern border is the southern border of both Waupaca and Outagamie Counties. There is a bit of confusion between the notes the client provided per the research report, specifically, His (Frederick C. Kruger) second wife was Bertha ( ). The client s family tree notes her as Ulrike Schewe and a birth date of 28 August 1857). It would appear that all of the documentation in the client s tree has her as Bertha so it is not certain where the name Ulrike Schewe is derived from would suggest attaching such documentation if it is available. The noted 1900 U.S. census tells us that Fred Kruger / Krueger lists an immigration year of The 1910 census 3 indicates an arrival year of 1868 so quite a spread on the years. The 1910 census also tells us that Fred and Bertha are now living in Waupaca County. As noted in the previous report, dated 6 August 2015, the Declaration of Intentions were searched for Outagamie and Waupaca counties and only the one noted in that previous report was found. Given that they were in Winnebago County in 1900 it would make sense to check those records as well. So the Petition for Naturalization Index for 1851 to was reviewed and the only reference to a Fred Kruger / Krueger was a Fredk Kreuger however that was 1. "1900 United States Federal Census [database online], Ancestry.com ( accessed 29 July, 2015), Census Place: Dupont, Waupaca, Wisconsin; Roll: 1823; Page: 4A; Enumeration District: 0124; FHL microfilm: Entry for Fred Krueger. 2. "1900 United States Federal Census [database online], Ancestry.com ( accessed 12 Aug, 2015), Census Place: Oshkosh Ward 9, Winnebago, Wisconsin; Roll: 1825; Page: 7B; Enumeration District: 0145; FHL microfilm: Entry for Fred Kruger. 3. "1910 United States Federal Census [database online], Ancestry.com ( accessed 12 Aug, 2015), Census Place: Caledonia, Waupaca, Wisconsin; Roll: T624_ ; Page: 9A; Enumeration District: 00685; FHL microfilm: Entry for Fred Kruger. 4. "Wisconsin, County Naturalization Records, ," database with images, FamilySearch ( : accessed 14 August 2015), Winnebago > Petition for naturalization index vol 1, A-Z > image 1 of 36. 3

dated 5 May 1854 so it could not possibly be our Fred as he not only would still be in Prussia / Germany, the Petition was only for adults. Another source which was checked was the 1884 to 1961 Naturalization Index for Winnebago County. Unfortunately here too, there was no record of a Fred Kruger / Krueger. 5. "Wisconsin, County Naturalization Records, ," database with images, FamilySearch ( : accessed 14 August 2015), Winnebago > Naturalization index A-Z > image 44 of 116; county courthouses, Wisconsin. 4

Summary The research in the 6 August 2015 report was based on a Fred Kruger / Krueger who was born the same month, year, and place as the client s Fred Krueger / Kruger, however it turned out to be the wrong individual. A search of the records for Winnebago county turned up no positive results in the search for naturalization records for the client s Fred Kruger. RECOMMENDATIONS The same recommendation from the initial report still holds true: A visit to the Wisconsin naturalization archives, which are house at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay might turn up additional records. This collection is at the Cofrin Library / Green Bay Area Research Center. A minor item but worth mentioning many of the sources the client has tied to their posted Ancestry.com tree are tied to other posted family trees. These trees are good to review for possible leads however it is not a good practice to merge your tree with these as you corrupt your tree with a considerable amount of completely unsubstantiated facts and a great number of times these sources are flat-out wrong. Always best to use only sources with documentation to support the statements. Otto Kruger Though not part of the original scope of the project, I was happy to look into what the client has on the possible connection between Fred Kruger and possible father Otto Kruger (the least I could do for dropping the ball for a portion of the first report). I did not see any documentation in the client s tree related to Otto Kruger just a belief that he was born In Rosenburg, Prussia. The earliest record the client has tied to Fred Kruger is an 1860 U.S. census for Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. This record is for a Fred Greger. While the surname could have been recorded incorrectly, this Fred was apparently born in Wisconsin not Prussia or Germany. Also, this is at least 8 years before we believe our Fred arrived. Finally, the father is listed as Godfred. The client has the apparently same family on the 1870 census though this time spelled Kreger the patriarch is still Godfred and Fred is still indicating a Wisconsin birth. So it is doubtful these records tie to our Fred. A search was done for records related to an Otto Kruger who would have been born from 1800 to 1838 in Winnebago, Outagamie, and Waupaca Counties. While records were found in each county, nothing was found which would tie to our Fred. Likewise, records were found in the 1870s and 1880s for a Fred Kruger who was born in Germany / Prussia at about the correct time but nothing related to an Otto as the father. It is uncertain if additional research will find something conclusive. We could not say without further research. 5
