1 Mastering New York Research Class #4: Researching New York City Christopher C. Child, Senior Genealogist Newbury Street Press, New York City vs. New York State There is often a big difference between researching in New York City and the rest of New York State. Even today, New York City has its own health department that records its vital records separately from the rest of New York, and most of the boroughs of New York City kept vital records for some time prior to While the New York State Library and Archives in Albany holds records for the entire state including New York City, repositories in New York City will have more pertinent and unique records. Unique Features of NYC Has its own history, geography, ethnic groups, commercial interests, etc. Enormous volume of records Multi-layered bureaucracies make research difficult Corporate boundaries and even street names changed over time Municipal offices often hard to access Positive Features of NYC Record-keeping usually better and began earlier than rural areas Has more-centralized research facilities (i.e., libraries, archives, historical societies) Newspapers and directories begin much earlier More and more records are being made available on the Internet Formation of New York City New Amsterdam, English Period, After Rev. War separate cities within different counties, annexation in the mid 19th century 1898 Five boroughs create NYC New York County 1874 western portion of the Bronx transferred from Westchester County to New York County, remainder of of Bronx transferred in 1895 Bronx, reunited and part of New York County until 1914, until Bronx County was formed. Kings County 1683 to present borders have seen little change Brooklyn annexed all towns by
2 Queens County all of present day Queens and Nassau Counties were part of Queens County eastern Queens became a borough of NYC while western Queens (North Hempstead, Oyster Bay, and most of Hempstead became the newly created Nassau County-except the Rockaways, which also joined NYC) Richmond County (Staten Island) 1683 to present, with little county boundary change Only a few towns until 1898 when the island became a borough of New York City Bronx County Part of Westchester County (west) 1895 (east) New York County 1874 or 1895 to 1914 Bronx County 1914 to present (youngest county in New York) TIP: Boundaries dictate record organization. New York City Records Census Substitutes for New York City New York Tax Lists/Assessment Rolls - Freeholders Lists, 1702 and assessment rolls (FHL) - Tax lists 1770s to 1780s (NY Archives) (NY Archives) - Some in Record; Coll. of N.Y. Hist. Soc. Poll Lists NYC Poll List - Jury census (Municipal Archives): 1816, 1819, 1821 New York City Police Census [fall of 1890] (FHL, NYC Archives, Ancestry.com) Census of Inmates and Poorhouses, (NYS Library, Ancestry.com) New York City Directories Starting 1786 Usually published annually Show ancestor s precise location and occupation Follow ancestor from year to year NYPL has large collection: /23 now digitized and browseable; /49 coming soon (nypl.org) Also on Ancestry.com, Fold3.com, FamilySearch.org 2
3 New York City Vital Records (See Class 3 for more information about New York State Vital Records and substitutes) *Town specific for towns not part of Brooklyn. Italiangen.org Brooklyn and Manhattan began vital record keeping in the 1860s. A very useful website Italiangen.org, has indexed these records up to the point of when records are publically available. For births this is until 1909, deaths until 1948, and marriages until With the certificate number, you can then order the record from the New York City Archives or view on microfilm from the Family History Library. New York City Religious Records Access and record type will vary by denomination. You may find New York City religious records: Online (familysearch.org, Ancestry.com, or place of worship website) Microfilm (check FHL) Published transcriptions May require appointment at church or archive New York City Cemetery Records New York City has a number of old, large, and well established cemeteries. While transcriptions or compiled databases are popular resources, be sure to contact the cemetery association or management directly, as they may have a more detailed record. Many of these larger cemeteries have genealogical services and websites that can assist you. New York City Newspapers Newspapers can act as vital record substitutes and enrich your understanding of an ancestor s life. A number of New York City newspapers have been digitized or made into searchable databases. Check the New York Public Library catalog for articles and databases: You may need a library card to access some of the content ( while others are freely available, such as: 3
4 New York City Probate Records and Wills (See Class 2 for more information about New York Probate Records) New York City Maps City maps important tools for genealogists. They show urban development and expansion, the renaming of streets, old businesses, and even give a description of buildings that are no longer present. The New York Public Library has a large collection of maps, some digitized at: Also take a look at OldNYC.org, which provides geo-referenced photographic views of New York City from the 1870s-1970s.
