Irish connection looks at sow books of use to the researcher whilst Computer Corner begins looking at some of the software available for home computers also included in this issue is the latest news of the 2nd Irish Origins Conference in Melbourne in May. The February meeting of the branch discussed the future directions we wish to take so that we could identify our needs and plan for the acquisition of equipment and resources that we require to satisfy these needs. Discussion between members resolved to concentrate on local, Australian and UK resources with some general material on other areas such as Europe and North America. Now that we have resolved this direction we can concentrate on identifying specific resources and raising the funds to acquire them. All suggestions on these matters Are sought so a priority acquisition list can be developed and a program put into action to impliment these resolutions.

2 Page Two THE AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER Dear Members, Since our last meeting our Secretary Irene Sheppard has decided because of family and business commitments, that she is unable to continue in office. I would like to thank Irene for the time and work that she gave to the group during the time that she was Secretary, as she brought new ideas and a dedication to the Warrnambool Branch and has helped to make it grow and become more efficient. Thanks Irene for a job well done, and hope that time will permit to still allow you to attend our meetings. It is good to see Joe House up and about again after his operation and time in hospital. Terri will not be able to attend our March meeting as she will be in hospital, hope your stay in hospital won't be long. Our March meeting will take the form of a workshop for our members, so here is your chance, if you have problems we will try and help to overcome them. We have received four names from persons who are interested in doing our beginners course, not as many as we had hoped for, but never the less it does show that there are still some interested to learn to trace their family tree. Members who have time to spare, and who could assist in manning the reference library, their help would be appreciated, as we have lost several members because of health or other commitments. There are several days available and times can be made to suit the members. Noel Hallam Area Administrator. HISTORY OF WARRNAMBOOL BRANCH OF A.I.G.S. The 'History and Activities of the Warrnambool Branch of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies Inc August 1980 to August 1990 is now available from the branch or by writing PO Box 607, Warrnambool Victoria Written and published by Marie Boyce this book tells the story of the first decade of operations of the Warrnambool Branch and includes a comprehensive index and set of interesting appendices. Priced at $6.00 ($5.00 for Branch Members) it is of interest to all who have had some contact with the Warrnambool Branch. COST OF IRISH RESEARCH A short item in the latest issue of BLARNEY quotes noted Irish Genealogist Paul Gorry of Gorry Research as indicating that an hourly rate of $A70.00 is not an unreasonable charge for research in Ireland. If you are contemplating using a researcher in Ireland get a quote first as it could save you quite a shock when the bill arrives and provide as much information as possible so you don't pay to get data you already have.

7 Page Seven COMPUTER CORNER Over the past four issues I have been looking at basic computer systems and home computer hardware, in this issue I will begin to have a look at the program software used in home computers. AN INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SOFTWARE - PART 1 Home computer programs or sof tware as it is known comes in many f orms and I will have a brief look at the following types of software. Wordprocessors Spreadsheets Publishing CAD Games Databases Graphics Utility Genealogical Educational There are many other specialist programs used by home computer operators but those listed above are the ones I will have a brief look at. WORDPROCESSORS Wordprocessors come with varying capabilities, some are basically just a computerised typewriter whilst others verge on full publishing programs with graphics and many other powerful facilities. In a basic wordprocessor you type in the information and the computer automatically wraps the end of a line at a predetermined point in other words a typewriter without having to use a carriage return. The advantage of a wordprocessor over a typewriter is the editing facilities available, you are able to move text from one point to another within the document, correct spelling, add or delete words and so on and when you are finally happy with what you have on screen you can print it out as many times as you like..by saving completed documents to disk they can be recalled at any time for further editing, updating or just for printing of additional copies. Depending on the printer hardware available and the capability of your computer and wordprocessing software, different fonts etc can be produced up to full professional publishing standards. SPREADSHEETS Whilst not often used at hem as they were designed for setting out financial data in columns and rows with mathematical calculation capabilities etc they are of use for accounting for home businesses etc. As these programs print out data in columns and rows they can be adapted for printing out birth briefs and the like if you don't have a genealogical program. PUBLISHING PROGRAMS Publishing software takes wordprocessing some steps further as it has extra features not normally available in a wordprocessing program allowing you to preview a full page before printing for example, this function allows you to see the full page on screen at the one time not just the normal 25 lines you see with your wordprocessor. Other powerful facilities specifically of use in the publishing area are incorporated into these program. Newsroom' for example is a simple publishing program for the Commodore 64 whilst 'Ventura' is a powerful program for the IBM compatible machines, these would be seen as both ends of the range of publishing programs Publishing on a home computer is usually termed 'Desktop Publishing'.

8 Page Eight COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING (CAD) CAD programs are available for most computers these days and allow accurate drawing of plans and maps on your computer all to scale. Commercial programs allow production of detailed building and services drawings in industry and for modern buildings and have replaced the manual drafts~ to some extent in these. areas due to the ease of modifying and production of a new updated copy. 'Cadpak-64' for a Commodore 64 to 'Autocad' for an IBM compatible machine is the range of program for home use with many others in between these limits. GAMES Most home computer owners have some games programs, besides providing entertainment these programs have value in helping people to become more comfortable with computers in general by removing some of the mystique surrounding these most useful machines. 1 The range of games software available is mindboggling, just look at any computer magazine and range from the very simple to the extremely challenging. DATABASES Databases are one of the most useful programs for the family historian and especially so for family history libraries and the like. A database is like an electronic version of a filing card system with instant access to the cards through powerful searching facilities to locate the data you require. When entering data into a database you design a card format and save that format. The card is broken into fields such as a name field, a date field a religion field and so on. These fields are what are used to search for information when retreiving data from the database. With the format designed data is entered into the appropriate fields and each 'card' saved into the database for later retrieval, usually each 1 card' is assigned a record number as it is saved. Records may be updated as new or more data becomes available and may be deleted if necessary. Data may be retrieved from a database by : a) Recalling the record by its assigned number, b) Recalling data by matching fields ie names, dates, locations etc By entering a specific date all records whose dates match will be recalled for viewing, ie all date fields are searched for a match. Naturally all database programs contain many more features than the few described which allow various sorting of information, printouts etc to be obtained. The size of the database is once again dependant on the hardware available and the program itself. A seperate database can be established for each category of data you wish to have available for retrieval. This discussion will be continued next issue.
